CHECKOUT PROCEDURES • All of the following checkout procedures can be done in any order as long as they are all accomplished. Batteries • Make sure battery clamps are secure, not missing any nuts, corrosion free and the battery is securely fastened. • An unsecured battery becomes a 75-pound missile in a vehicle accident. • Insure the battery terminals are free from any corrosion. If corrosion is present, clean the terminals with a baking soda and water, to form a paste. Use a old toothbrush or small scrub-brush, then rinse with water. • Be careful not to get any of this solution on you or your clothing, it is acid and will burn you. If there is an excessive amount of corrosion build-up on the terminals, it needs to be written up and reported to the mechanics. • This is a primary indicator of voltage regulator malfunction. Coolant Level • The P-23 has an open type system. If the truck overheats the excess overflow will discharge on the ground. • If you can see coolant in the sight glass then there is no need to remove the radiator cap. • If the coolant color in the sight glass has a red or brown tint to it, report it to maintenance, this means that the rust inhibitors are ineffective. • If there is no coolant in the sight glass, fill the radiator with the proper 50/50 mixture of coolant/water. • Only fill it until the sight glass if full, anymore will cause the radiator to over pressurize. • There must be a minimum level of 2 inches free space in the top, this is why the glass is two inches below the opening to allow for normal expansion. Winterization System • The winterization system has its own coolant tank. • The check and the fill is on the top of the truck. • To check and fill the tank, remove the lid and check the fluid, if the fluid is low add the proper 50/50 mixture or water/antifreeze. Engine Oil Level • Unscrew the T-handle on the oil dipstick and pull the stick out of the check tube all the way. • With a clean towel, wipe off all the oil on the stick. • Insert the stick completely back into the check tube and remove it all the way. • Read the level of the oil on the stick, remembering not to turn the dipstick upside down, keep the stick at least horizontal so you do not get a false reading. • Make sure the level is at the full mark, if it is not make sure the engine has not been run recently. • If the engine is cool, add more until the level reaches the full mark. Transmission Oil Check • The oil check for the transmission is similar to the engine oil check. • When pulling out the check stick, make sure you keep the end of the stick pointed down so you do not get a inaccurate reading. • Contact the mechanics for low levels. Power Steering Fluid Check • The oil check for the power steering fluid is like all other stick checks. • Make sure you keep the stick pointed down so you do not get a false reading. • If fluid is needed, fill though the same opening where the check is located. Water Tank • Open the lid on the top of the truck and visually check that the tank is full. • DO NOT RELY ON THE LIGHTS IN THE CAB! VEHICLE OPERATIONS CHECKOUT PROCEDURES • • If the water is not in the top screen you need to fill the tank. You can fill the tank 2 ways—You can use a hose and take it to the top and put the nozzle in the tank opening or you can fill the truck from a hydrant. Foam Tank • Make sure the foam tank is full and that the float moves freely up and down. • If the P-23 needs foam, fill the tank from the top until you can see it in the screen. • If the foam needs to be drained for some reason, the foam drain is located on the left side behind the Foam Transfer Compartment. Wheel and Lug Nut Check • Insure that the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. • Inspect the tires for uneven wear, punctures, or cuts. • Check that the rims are not bent. • Check that each lug nut is physically tight. • Most trucks have a line on the lug nut as well as on the stud, you can visually check for tightness by checking if the line match up.
