COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is a three hour credit course that acquaints students with a variety of British and American poets and
poetry from the Elizabethan century to the contemporary. The course examines selective poems within the
context of theoretical, social, political, cultural, and literary movements. The course engages insights on
reading, analysing, and writing about poetry.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Explain the composition of poetry, and the textual meaning of poems

Identify major poets and representative poems

Differentiate between British and American poetry and poets

Identify/Explain the relationship between poetry and cultural/historical issues

Recognize the ways in which poetry responds, and/or constructs life in different centuries

Write academic reviews, reports, journals, and/or a research paper on the literary and cultural
implications of poetry

Demonstrate the skills of independent critical thinking

Criticize the human subject and its role in society

Explore ideas through the use of journal-type writing

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Students are expected to be punctual and attend all classes.
-
Students should be in class BEFORE the instructor. Any late student will NOT be permitted to enter 10
minutes after the class has started.
-
If a student arrives after the scheduled beginning time for class, it will be put down in the attendance
sheet as Late (2 times Late = 1 absence).
-
Being absent for more than 20% of allocated course time means that the student will receive a DN
(denied from final exam) grade which is equivalent to an F. Only documented medical reports are
accepted as an excuse for these absences.
GENERAL POLICIES:

There will be NO make-up exams.

Medical reports cannot be received in class. To present a medical report, come to the instructor’s
office during office hours.

During classes and exams, mobile phones should be turned off or set to silent mode.

Students are expected to know and abide by the KAU policies governing student conduct.

Students are expected to exhibit a high level of personal and academic integrity and honesty.
