Spring 2011 A Newsletter to the Community from The Friends of the Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas Internationally and Nationally Recognized Writers and CBCST Clients Present Poetry As Joy & Healing The CBCST held our first ever Poetry As Joy & Healing event in February which proved to be a truly memorable and extraordinary evening! Illustrious writers Georgia Heard, Naomi Shihab Nye, Jennifer Martin and Cyra Dumitru presented with CBCST children and teens who shared their personal works utilizing our Narrative Therapy programs. At the CBCST, we specialize in developing therapeutic interventions for grieving families and children. Each client can chose an expressive modality to use to communicate their experience of loss to others. Choosing what feels healing allows clients to connect to inner strengths and talents to support them through the grieving process and enables the creation of forms of meaningful responses to their experience of pain and love; and allows clients to move between the stress of loss and their own protective inner resources. Our Poetry as Joy & Healing event was well attended and fully enjoyed by our clients and community. We introduced to all, a presentation of poetry, one of the dynamic, creative, and healing expressive art mediums processes that abound at the CBCST. This was the first presentation in a series that will match professionals with children in grief in distinct areas of expressive arts. We heard from nine individuals, all poets, at different stages of development. Several distinguished professional poets including provided our young grieving clients with poetry as a model for expression, an outlet for their merging poetic talent. Our young poets, Xavier Flores (age 17), Shanique Martinez (age 8), Isabella Briones (age 11), Jakob Barrios (age 9), and Megan Huff (age 8), listened to and observed professionals using poetry to communicate their grief and then read their own poems alongside the professionals. These talented professionals who presented, dedicated their time to teach us about the tools to express the human condition with sensitivity and depth. Clients feel profound absence after death and depend on relationships to decrease isolation (ABOVE) Poets Naomi Shihab Nye and Georgia Heard. (Left) Young poet and client Shanique Martinez autographs her poetry. and loneliness. Clients used poetry and interacted with others, increasing communication and support. This could change the rest of one’s life thru a deep connection with an inner talent as well as with another who supports expressive capacities in us. I felt deeply comforted and uplifted by my visit to the CBCST. Any place that encourages and nourishes creative expression for grief-healing is a precious oasis that deserves to be championed by all artists who have found strength after sadness, through words, art, and sharing. — Naomi Shihab Nye 2010 CBCST Annual Campaign Raises More Than $340K for Local Children Thanks to the dedicated efforts of our CBCST staff, board members, clients, parents and friends we are thrilled to have exceeded our 2010 Friends of the CBCST Annual Support Campaign goal! 100% of every dollar raised will sponsor FREE grief support services for the children we serve. Our campaign success would not have been possible without the support of many; but we would like to especially recognize three very special CBCST individuals, Deborah and David Rogers, and Laura Nell Burton. A generous gift from Deborah and David Rogers allowed us to meet and exceed our goal of $320,000. Laura Nell Burton poignantly shared her story of her journey through unresolved grief after the loss of her mother at age 16. Her dedication and courage to share her own struggles with grief truly showcased the value of our mission and the impact your financial support has upon the children and families we serve. Gifts to our Friends of the CBCST Annual Support Campaign help ensure that every grieving child and their caregiver can participate in peer support group programs at the CBCST free of charge. To all of our generous contributors, thank Our Mission To foster healing for grieving youth, their families and the community through peer support programs, counseling, training, education and outreach. you for making it possible for us to mend young hearts, one child at a time. Contributions are always welcome. If you missed an opportunity to participate in the Friends of the CBCST Annual Support Campaign please visit our website at www.cbcst.org to make a donation. (Left) Michelle Muniz, Programs Operations Manager Sincerely, (Right) Patricia McNaught, Clinical Director Traci B. Gomez — Executive Director Mary Geitzen-Pritchard 10 Annual th Mary Geitzen-Pritchard and her daughter, Samantha first came to the CBCST in the fall of 2007 after her husband, Ken Pritchard, died suddenly from a catastrophic arrhythmia due to an undiagnosed genetic heart malady. Mary and Samantha participated in the grief support program for children who have experienced the sudden death of a parent. Their work at the CBCST has given them the fortitude to maintain their precious memories of Ken, forge ahead and make new sense of their lives without him. The following is a portion of the speech she gave as the Hearts in Harmony Gala: Hearts in Harmony Gala There are many questions with grief: “How do you do this?” “How do you raise a child who has experienced profound loss?” “How do you answer the tough questions?” I can tell you I faced a tough one when Sam asked where her dad was buried, and I had to explain what cremation was and that his ashes were scattered on her grandpa’s land in Mendocino County in California. So I called the Bereavement Center, and they gave me the words to use to explain it. Or, how do you deal with father/daughter dances or dads and donuts when there is no dad? How do you move through without moving on? I’ve gotten a lot of answers from the staff at the Bereavement Center, but many of my answers come from my peers as well, men and women just like me raising their kids on their own. As a society, we do not do death well, especially untimely deaths. Every dime you give to the Bereavement Center provides the needle and thread necessary to mend the hearts of the kids and their parents and caregivers. Mending is about fortifying, not perfecting, and getting through grief is not about forgetting; it’s about remembering, and having the fortitude under you to maintain those memories and forge ahead to make new ones. The Children’s Bereavement Center makes that possible. Linda Fugit first learned about The Children’s Bereavement Center of South Texas through a friend and business associate whose daughter had just been named the new Executive Director. Upon learning about the mission of the Center, she felt an instant connection. She joined the Save the date! Friends of the CBCST board in 2006, where she served as membership chair for two years, then went on to become President in 2009. When the CBCST began its capital campaign for a new building in 2009, Linda agreed to serve as chair of the facilities committee. This job soon turned into “full-time project manager” during the renovation and 11th Annual construction phases, then again transitioned as she took on the role of interior designer and space planner. Linda spent thousands of hours over an 18-month period doing anything and everything required to get the job done. If you have stepped through the doors of the new Children’s Bereavement Center, you will know right away why we call it a home...a privilege we owe to Linda’s talent, perseverance and vision.
