Content Focus:
The importance of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the impact that it had on the United States is crucial to
understanding the United States role in World War II. The events are important to understand how the people felt
at this time.
Instructional Goals
* The students should be able to summarize the events leading to the Japanese attack on Pearl
Harbor.
* The students should be able to describe the attack on Pearl Harbor.
* The students should be able to analyze the effects of the Pearl Harbor attack on the world.
* The students should be able to compare the Pearl Harbor attack with attack on 9/11/2001.

Rationale
Students need to understand the importance of Pearl Harbor and how similar the country felt
when 9/11 happened and the similarities and differences. The students cannot understand World War II
without knowing the events of Pearl Harbor.

1. Introduction ( 8 Minutes)

2. The Preparations (Lecture) ( 18 Minutes)
a. The Japanese Preparations
i. Their new air force.
ii. The new technology specifically for Pearl Harbor

iii. Battleships lined in a row. “Battleship Row”
iv. Shallow Harbor
3. The Attack
a. The First Wave
i. The first wave of 183 Japanese bombers, led by Commander Pilot Fuchida, arrived at
7:55 a.m. December 7, 1941.
ii. The attack on Battleship Row began as the ships were lined up like sitting ducks for
the torpedoes and bombs prepared especially for the shallow water of Pearl Harbor.
iii. USS Arizona hit and sunk.
iv. USS Nevada sank in n9 minutes.
b. Second Wave
i. The next wave of 170 Japanese bombers reached Pearl Harbor at 8:54 a.m Sunday
morning.
ii. The Oklahoma capsized.
iii. The battle lasted two hours with very few American planes able to get off the ground.
iv. The element of surprise had been achieved as the Japanese caught the Americans off
guard and unprepared.
c. Third Wave
i. Commander Fushido urged a third wave of attack to invade the islands in order to
gain the advantage to attack California.
ii. His request was denied as the Japanese fleet turned south into the Pacific sparing the
Americans further devastation.
iii. Fushido saw weakness in his superiors actions. After this attack, the pilots were
dispersed and the air force never was strong again. The old generals saw no use for
planes for attack. Fushido grew unhappy with the emperor and the Shinto religion. He
miraculously missed the atomic bomb and lived to read a tract by a missionary after
the war. He was saved.
iv. God is always in control of life and He has a plan for everyone’s life even
Commander Fushida. Offer children God’s Samurai to read for extra credit.
4. Aftermath
a. 2,395 Casualties of whom 65 civilians
b. The five battleships that sank were the following: USS Arizona, Nevada, W. Virginia,
California, and Oglala
c. The Japanese only lost 29 planes.
d. President Roosevelt declares December 7th to be a “date that will go down in infamy.”
5. Importance- Ask what students think importance is? ( 4 Minutes)
a. Pearl Harbor was the greatest attack on the U.S in history.
