Reading:
Read the title, author, and illustrator to your child. Ask “What do you think
the story will be about?” Help your child do a “Book Look” or “Picture Walk.”
Encourage your child to sound out the words on their own once through,
then help with challenging words. Read the book to your child. Have your
child read the book to you two or three times. Ask “What was the book
about? What did you learn from this book?”

Main Idea: Fill in the middle area with the main idea of the story. Record
four supporting details in the other areas, using key words and pictures.

Content words: cuddling, feeding, protecting, singing, teaching, washing
Fold paper in half. On one half, draw a picture of an animal mom doing
something for her baby. On the other half, draw a picture of your mom
doing something for you. Under each picture write one sentence telling
about the picture.
Record these four books on your Reading Log.

Open Court Letter Sound Practice:
Please review letters/sounds introduced thus far in Open Court. You and/or
your child received a cardstock letter ring at our 1st Quarter
Parent/Teacher conference. Ask your child to say the letter, picture, sound,
and do the motion for the pictures introduced so far.

Practice/review first, second, and third quarter words. Please do not sound
out these words but put them in your memory bank. Focus on the words

Think of a way penguins might communicate with words if they could
Example: If penguins could talk with us, I think they would tell us that they
want food.
Page 2: All Dressed Up
Describe the clothing you wear when dressed up.
Example: I wear my black dress and look like new!
Cut out three Penguin pages and make into a booklet with gray yarn. Gray
yarn has been taped to these pages. The holes have been punched for you
to put your yarn through to make a booklet. Please put yarn through the
holes and tie together to hold booklet together.
