Environmental Health and Safety Lincoln University Police Department What Material Can I Put In the Trash or Down the Drain? This fact sheet is primarily designed to give guidance on safe disposal of unused, off-spec, or outdated chemicals currently residing in labs. Please note that only materials on the list that have not been mixed with, or come into contact with hazardous waste can be managed in the trash or down the drain without prior approval. The hazardous materials compliance officer reserves the right to approve the discharge and/or disposal of certain wastes on a case-by-case basis. The USEPA, Missouri DNR, and City of Jefferson have established rules and regulations for the amount and type of chemicals that can be fed into the sewer system and put in landfills. These rules and regulations have been established to protect human health and the environment from exposure to hazardous substances, as well as to prevent damage to the City’s wastewater treatment and landfill facilities. Discharges of liquid material destined for the sewer must happen via a laboratory sink drain only and flushed with copious amounts of water. (15-20 times the original volume) Please allow time for the previous chemical to be completely flushed prior to discharging the next chemical waste. Disposal of solid waste destined for a landfill must be disposed of in limited small quantities. Only dispose of these materials in 5 – 10 lbs increments at a time. Please consult with the hazardous materials officer for disposal of larger quantities of materials. If material is in original containers please ensure that the containers are tightly sealed. If you have any questions or need a waste determination performed please contact Robert Clay, Hazardous Materials Officer at 681-5497 or [email protected]. Criteria for Selection All of the materials on the list are considered non-hazardous materials that have met the following criteria below: Material That Can Go In the Trash Non radioactive material; Non biological hazard; Not flammable, reactive, corrosive or listed hazardous waste (per EPA hazardous waste definition); (click here for “What is a Hazardous Waste” Fact Sheet) Version 5 2/15/13 pg. 1 Environmental Health and Safety Lincoln University Police Department Is not a substance which may adversely affect human health or the environment (e.g., have an oral-rat LD50 toxicity value less than 500 mg/kg or identified as a Toxic priority pollutant by the EPA); Is not a carcinogenic substance according to the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 1979 Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances Material That Can Go Down the Drain Chemicals that are discharged to the Jefferson City wastewater treatment plant must meet all the above criteria for material that can go into the trash plus the additional requirements noted below: Cannot be a noxious nor have a disagreeable odor; (Examples: pyridine, dimethylamine, 1,4-butanediamine, butyric acids, mercaptoethanol, and valeric acids) No solid material (i.e. saw dust ashes, hair, cinders, sand, rocks, mud, straw, shavings, metal, glass, rags, feathers, tar, plastics, wood) if it is acceptable non-hazardous material it should be disposed of in the trash can; Meet an adjusted pH range for discharge 5.5<pH< 10.5; Oil and Grease discharges must not exceed 100mg/l Inorganic Materials This is a list of water-soluble salt solutions of low-toxicity cations and low-toxicity anions. Version 5 2/15/13 pg. 2 Environmental Health and Safety Lincoln University Police Department Conditionally Approvable Material That Can Go Down the Drain Regulated Metals Wastes containing the following metals must be reviewed and approved by the hazardous materials officer before any discharge can occur. There are strict regulatory limits on these metals. The hazardous materials officer will coordinate with appropriate faculty to get information on quantity of metals in wastes to check compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
