Introduction
The earth is always moving. The earth makes one complete turn in 24 hours, or 1 day.
The earth goes all the way around the sun in 365 days, or 1 year. Not only is the earth constantly
moving, it is also tilted, or leaning to one side. Because the earth is tilted and revolves around the
sun, we have seasons on Earth. The seasons are a pattern of weather changes that happen each
year. People in different parts of the world have different seasons, because the sun is hitting the
earth in different places. For example, if it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere of Earth, it is
winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
Spring
We will start in the spring season. The reason we will start here is because spring is the
season of beginnings. Many animals are born in spring, and plants start growing. In spring, our
side of the earth is tilted slightly toward the sun, so the weather starts to get warmer. The days
start getting longer. There is usually more rain too. This is good weather for plants to start
growing.
Summer
Summer is after spring. Earth rotated so that the sun is shining directly at our side of
Earth, the Northern Hemisphere. This means that the days are longer, and the weather is hot.
Baby animals are growing, and many plants are growing and flowering.
Fall
The fall season is next. During Fall, the Northern Hemisphere begins rotating away from
the sun again. Because of this, the weather gets colder. The days get shorter. In fall, the leaves
change color and fall off the trees. Animals prepare for winter by gathering food.
Winter
The winter season is last. In winter, the Northern Hemisphere of Earth is pointed away
from the sun. This means that it is cold and the days are short. In some places, it snows. There
are no leaves on the trees, and many plants die. Some animals hibernate, because there is not
much food. Some animals also grow long fur coats to keep warm.
