Telstra and City of Holdfast Bay switch on free public Wi-Fi
16 JUNE 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Free Wi-Fi for visitors and residents to popular destinations in the City of Holdfast Bay can now be accessed
as part of a new partnership between Telstra and the Council.
Launched on World Wi-Fi Day (20 June), 19 high-speed Wi-Fi hotspots have been installed in popular
community locations in Glenelg, Brighton, Somerton Park and Seacliff. These sites include the Glenelg
Foreshore, Jetty Road Glenelg and Jetty Road Brighton, the Brighton Caravan Park, Brighton Oval, Partridge
House, Brighton Esplanade and Wigley Reserve.
City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Stephen Patterson said Holdfast Bay is excited to be the first council in South
Australia to offer this extensive range of free connectivity through the Telstra Air® network.
“The ability to offer locals, visitors and businesses easy access to free Wi-Fi through this extensive, city-wide
range of hot spots adds another significant drawcard to Holdfast Bay,” he said.
“Free public Wi-Fi is the benchmark for new world cities and Holdfast Bay is now one of the leading councils in
Australia with this new network. This service will provide new opportunities for businesses, locals and visitors
to connect and share their experiences, which all helps to grow our city’s digital economy and tourism profile.”
“Residents and visitors can access the new free network by selecting the Wi-Fi option on their smartphone or
tablet and choosing ‘Holdfast Bay Council Free WiFi’,” said Mark Bolton, General Manager for Telstra in SA.
“Each Wi-Fi site has a range of approximately 50 metres in each direction but the distance can vary
depending on environmental and physical obstructions such as trees and buildings.
“Wi-Fi sessions using the network will not be limited by data. People will be able to use 30 minutes per device
per day at each location for free, regardless of which service provider they’re with.
The City of Holdfast Bay will be installing signage near the Wi-Fi locations to highlight where the free community
hotspots are located. The locations will also be included at www.telstra.com/air.
“The Glenelg Telstra Air hotspots are currently some of the most highly used hotspots in Adelaide and we
expect with this extension it will quickly shoot up to be the most connected part of the city,” Mr Bolton added.
Mr Bolton said the partnership with the City of Holdfast Bay is part of Telstra’s plan to work with councils,
business enterprises and governments and bring world-class connectivity to the places where people live and
work across Australia.
This is Telstra’s first Council partnership completed in South Australia, with a second Wi-Fi partnership with
the City of Unley expected to be available for public use in coming weeks.
World Wi-Fi Day is backed by the World Broadband Alliance and will be held on 20 June 2016, celebrating
the significant role Wi-Fi is playing in connecting communities around the world. For more information visit
