Reading Room Redo
The Back Mountain Memorial Library has been a beehive of activity during the
month of January, while undergoing renovations and updating. New shelving was
obtained for the Reading Room from Marywood University, who replaced their
shelving. Matheson Warehouse and Transfer Company and Movers stored,
delivered, and installed the
shelving which now provides
more than adequate space for
the volumes of fiction, nonfiction books, young adult
books,
paperbacks,
and
periodicals the library has
available for its patrons.
Belfino Electrical Company
mounted and connected the
lighting for each area in the
Reading Room. Our patrons will discover new comfortable seating and study
areas in the refurbished area. The Intermetro commercial shelving that had been
in place for many years will be (or has been) repurposed. The architectural firm,
hemmler + camayd provided valuable guidance and oversight throughout this
renovation.
The Board and staff of the library appreciate the patience that our patrons
showed during the renovations. We are more than grateful to the administration
of Marywood University for making the shelving available. In addition, we are
indebted to Matheson Warehouse Company, Belfino Electrical Company, and
hemmler + camayd architects for their generosity, time, and combined efforts to
make these changes possible. The upgrades have greatly enhanced and beautified
the library for our community.
REMEMBERING A LOYAL FRIEND
Shawn Murphy was an inspiring woman who was ready,
willing, and able to help whenever the occasion arose. She
was a member of the Library Friends Steering Committee for
as long as anyone can remember and an active library user.
As a life-long community activist, both in the Back Mountain
where she resided and in Northeastern PA as a whole,
Shawn’s ideas and opinions were highly regarded while she
faithfully served the Friends Steering Committee in
numerous capacities over the years; most notably as past
chairs of the Fruit Sale and Basket Booth at the Auction as
well as co-editor of the Library Link. While working in the District Office for
Senator Charles Lemmond, Shawn and the Senator were instrumental in securing
a $20,000 grant in 2005 to make renovations to the Slightly Used Bookshop where
Shawn was a volunteer from 1999 to 2014. Sadly, Shawn lost her bravely fought
battle with metastatic cancer this past December, and we lost a loyal Friend and
valuable supporter of the library who will be truly missed.
Dallas Area High School made a donation to the library as the recipient
of their annual Holiday Gift. Row 1: Martha Butler, Library Director;
Tammy McMahon, Library Board President; Dr. Thomas J. Duffy,
Superintendent of Schools; Dawn Keifer, Director of Special Education.
Row 2: Jason Rushmer, High School Principal; Gary Williams, Library
Board Member; Grant Palfey, High School Business Manager; Dan
Nestorick, Student Information Management System Administrator.

“PA One Book Every Young Child” 2016 selection is Kite Day: A Bear and Mole Story.
Written and illustrated by Will Hillenbrand, this picture book is for children ages 3 to 6.
Published in 2012 by Holiday House, this story is about two friends, Mole and Bear,
who decide to make a kite and find themselves on a windy-day adventure. This is the
11th year for this valuable program that highlights the importance of early literacy
development in pre-schoolers and the importance of reading early and often to
children, as well as engaging them in conversation and other activities around books. A
special program will be held in the Children’s Room during National Library Week, on
Thursday, April 14 at 11:00 a.m. All children are welcome to attend.
Summer Story Hours – Registration for summer story hours will be held on Tuesday,
June 7 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Story hours will begin the week of June 19. Sessions will
not be held during the week of July 3 due to the set up for the Auction scheduled for
July 7 through July 10.
“Ready, Set, Read!” is the theme for this summer’s reading program! Children and
teens will enjoy reading books of their choice, a variety of special programs pertaining
to health and fitness, prizes, games, a final party and more! All children ages preschool through 18 years of age are invited to register after school ends in June.

David Pupa to speak at the
Back Mountain Library Author Luncheon
The friends of the Back Mountain Memorial Library will host their 28th Annual
Luncheon with a Special Author starting at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 21st at the
Apple Tree Terrace, Newberry Estate, Dallas. The guest speaker will be David Pupa,
an author born in Wilkes-Barre and whose family is all still living here.

school. After graduating from Seton Hall University with a degree in accounting/finance, he worked on
Wall Street as a financial advisor. In 2002 he made a career change and attended Marywood University where
he received a Masters Degree in Social Work and subsequently received clinical licensure. He is currently in
private practice as a psychotherapist in Sea Girt, N. J. The Magician is David’s first novel, and he is currently
working on his second.
A social hour will begin at 11:00 a.m., and the buffet luncheon will be served at 12:00 noon. All proceeds
from the luncheon, sale of books, basket raffle and the pre-order geranium sale will benefit the library. Tables
of eight are encouraged and may be reserved. Checks in the amount of $27.00 should be made payable to the
Back Mountain Memorial Library and received at the library, 96 Huntsville Road, Dallas, Pa. 18612 by April

The Library Auction Celebrates 70 Years
July 7, 8, 9, and 10 (Rain date – July 11)
Meet our new Auction Chairperson, Gerard Geise, who is honored to be
involved with such a great tradition, “I am a proud member of our community.
The closeness of a small town takes us back in time when things were simpler,
when family and community were the fabric of our lives. The auction is the
foundation of Back Mountain community life that brings excitement every
summer, and this being our 70th year makes it that much more exciting!” Gerard,
a resident for 48 years and owner of Dallas Centre Hardware, is happy to be following in the footsteps
of his father-in-law, Jim Eason, who was a past auction chair. Married to his lovely wife, Michele, for 22
years, he is the father of three wonderful boys, Garrett, Elijah, and Judah. In organizing this year’s auction
Gerard hopes to pave the way for 70 more years of fun and library support!
Join Us at the Auction Kick-Off Dinner!
The doors are open to the community for the annual Auction Kick-Off Dinner planned for June 6 at the
Apple Tree Terrace in Dallas. Chairperson Maureen Leahigh encourages, “If you’ve never attended, this is
a great year to put a table of friends together for an evening of fun and bidding!” The mini auction will have
a sampling of goods from the Plants, Jewelry, Antiques, New Goods and Nearly Olde committees in addition
to themed raffle baskets and a silent auction. Cocktails, hors de’oeuvres and preview of the mini auction
items begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:00. Make your reservations at the library by May 27.
Come Dine at Leggio’s
Bring family and friends to Leggio’s Italian Restaurant at 64 Center Hill Road, Dallas, to enjoy some
great food and support our library at the same time on Tuesday, April 26th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A
percentage of all food sales (bar sales not included), take-out orders, and gift cards sold during those hours
will be donated to the library for their Children’s Summer Reading Program. All patrons are invited to
register for a $25.00 Leggio’s gift card, and a donation jar will be available to further support the BMML. We
thank the community for their continued participation and Salvatore and Lori Leggio for offering this
