Emil Hmja was born in 1892 in Crystal Falls, Michigan, the son of a Finnish immigrant, and
received an A.B. degree in 1917 from the University of Washington. Later, he was an Alaskan
gold miner, a newspaperman, and a financial analyst on Wall Street.
Hmja worked on newspapers in Texas and Alaska, and from 1921-1926 was publisher and editor
of The Breckenridge (TX) Daily American. At one time, he served as secretary to Charles A.
Sulzer, delegate to the House of Representatives from Alaska.
Mr. Hmja was executive director of the Democratic National Committee from 1932-1937, when
he was widely known as the man who put mathermatics into politics. He used his statistics first
in the 1932 campaign and was 97% correct. His analyses of national opinion in 1934 and 1936
allowed James Farley, chairman of the DNC, to concentrate on doubtful sections of the country.
Farley's prediction, a week before the 1936 election, that FDR would carry 46 states to defeat
Landon, was based on Hmja's chart, graphs, and tables.
Hmja's predictions were not always right. He predicted that Willkie would win by a landslide in
1940, and that Dewey would be elected in 1944 by 2,500,000 votes.
After he resigned from the DNC, Mr. Hmja worked in New York as a financial analyst. In 1938,
he was a member ofthe Pennsylvania State Commission of the Delaware Tercentenary. In 1939,
he went to Pathfinder magazine as an editor, serving there until1945.
In 1946, he returned to Michigan and unsuccessfully tried to win election as a Republican to the
House of Representatives from the twelfth Michigan district.
Mr HUJ.ja served in World War I, rising to the rank of captain in the air service of the Army. He
was holder of the Order of White Rose (Finland) and the Knight First Class, Order of St. Olav
(Norway). He was a member of the American Political Science Association, the American
Economics Association, the American Society of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and
Sigma Delta Chi, the nationa1joumalism fraternity. He was the author of the History of
Presidential Inaugurations (1932) and Westward Ho, Fare Paid (1936).
He married Gudrun Andersen in 1919.
Emil Hurja died May 30, 1953 of a heart attack at 3:30p.m. at the National Press Club.
