HISTORY of the GARDEN

Roses are classified into three major groupings:
Species (i.e. wild roses), Old Garden Roses
(classes in existence before 1867) and Modern
Roses (classes in existence after 1867). The garden
is planted with the most recent introductions of
modern roses as well as many classic roses.
Hybrid Teas & Grandifloras are easily
recognized for a single, sculptural, high-centered
bloom per long stem. Bushes normally reach 5-6
feet tall.
Floribundas are known for their large clusters
of medium-sized flowers that cover the bush all
season long. They are generally hardy and easy to
care for, growing to 3-4 feet tall.
Miniatures are dense, low-growing roses that
cover themselves with tiny blooms, usually in
clusters. They are often grown in containers or
rockeries to be used as edging, or as indoor plants.
Miniatures can grow to 18-24 inches tall.
Minifloras are a relative newcomer to the
evolution of modern roses. They were established
in 1999 to recognize varieties with blooms bigger
than a miniature but smaller than a floribunda.
Minifloras grow to 2-3 feet tall.
Shrubs are the product of recent hybridizing
breakthroughs that have combined old garden
rose forms and fragrances with modern colors and
repeat blooming characteristics. These plants can
grow to 6-7 feet high.
Ground Covers are a landscaping category of
vigorous, disease resistant, low-growing plants
that spread up to 8 feet wide for bedding and
massing. These varieties are usually hardy.
Climbers & Ramblers are actually shrubs with
long, arching stems. These roses grow to 6-20 feet
high when trained on walls, trellises and fences.
Training the long canes in a horizontal position
promotes increased bloom production. Given
adequate space, ramblers will grow 30 feet in
every direction to cover a tree or even a house.
They are generally winter hardy and often have
just one bloom cycle each year.
History of
the
Garden
T
The Pageant of Roses Garden opened in April
1959, designed by Howard Troller (then with the firm of
Cornell, Bridgers and Troller), who also had a hand in
landscaping the Los Angeles Civic Center, the Los Angeles
County Music Center, and the UCLA and Occidental
College campuses. Rosarian John H. van Barneveld guided
the development of the garden which, at its opening,
featured 240 varieties of rose plants. The garden grew in
size, content and acclaim over the years.
• In 1984, the American Rose Society’s Public Gardens
Committee awarded the Pageant of Roses Garden with
its Outstanding Public Garden Achievement Award.
• In 2000, the garden initiated the first-ever International
Rose Trials in the U.S., with new varieties undergoing a twoyear trial period. Through this annual event, an alliance was
formed with other trial gardens in the Pacific Rim: Gifu, Japan;
Adelaide, Australia; and Hamilton, New Zealand. Collectively,
these gardens form the Pacific Accord of Rose Friendship.
• In 2006, the garden received the World Federation of
Rose Societies’ Award of Garden Excellence. Only a handful
of gardens throughout the world have received this honor.
Today, the 10-acre rose garden is one of the most
outstanding in America with approximately 9,000 rosebushes
that offer visitors a spectacular experience with their beauty
and fragrance. The garden consists of 84 different beds,
each marked with their respective varieties.
“We have a threefold mission here,” says Dr. Tommy
Cairns, Curator of the Pageant of Roses Garden. “First, we
want to promote the rose as a flower that’s easy to grow.
We are also providing a showcase of roses for the public.
And lastly, because the rose is the emblem for Rose Hills
Memorial Park, our goal is to create a topnotch garden.”
The garden has been developed with an emphasis
on modern roses suitable for the home garden to allow
the public to observe varieties that would thrive in the
sub-tropical climate of Southern California. If visitors
want to learn how to grow these beautiful flowers in
their own gardens, the staff at Rose Hills is eager to
provide information and inspiration. Free rose pruning
demonstrations are held every January, and a rose care
seminar is hosted every June.
