August - EAA Chapter 382

Date:8-21-14
Visitors:
New Members:Terry Lambert (Zenith 750 build)
Discussions/Decisions:
 Transition of President to George Herzog
 Transition of Secretary to Jack Ackerson
 Still need to fill VP position
 Website and Monthly fliers:
o Nigel and Wayne/Kay coordinating the YE pics to website
o Mark Swinford – some members cannot download fliers suggestion is to post on website
 Bob Dewenter - suggestion for Nigel, Bob and George to meet regarding website on Friday 22 August
 Christmas Party – Reiff Lorenz, Bob Dewenter, will work details, date, etc. Suggestion is to reserve a private
room in a restaurant so we can still have projector, screen, show this years activities.
 Motion, seconded and approved by vote for publication and hand-out of a current roster to all paid
members to facilitate Chapter 382 “builders helping builders” communication. The vulnerability of identifying
a physical location of aircraft construction resources was discussed and the decision was made to include
only name, email address, phone number and comment section if inclined. George to send an email to
Steve Haupt requesting printed copies for a handout at the September meeting.
 At the close of the business session Al Gunderson commemorated 'Christmas in August' by passing out
attractive 'Huffman Prairie Flying Field' pins depicting the Wright Flyer.
Young Eagles: Wayne Moyer (pre-meeting email content)
 At this point we’ve flown 105 kids, with roughly 30 each signed up for September and October. The October
group will mostly be kids from an Aviation Science class at Dayton Christian, who may know more about
flying than we do and who will have had sim time before flying.
 We currently have 4 pilots who have reached 10 flights with Reiff, Fin, and Van at 7, Dave has 6. With 2
Rallies to go we really hope the can hit the 10 mark.
Program: Bruce Wright’s RAN S-7 Build
This was a well attended program by the chapter with 22 members being there. The background provided by Bruce
shows he is not a novice at building having completed a RAN S-10 in 1998. His first RANS project was completed
over a 6 year period. He started it while assigned to Edwards AFB in CA, continued the project while assigned as a
professor at the USAF Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, and finally completed the build and flight testing while
attending Texas A&M University (gig’em Ags!). The S-10 is a mid-wing aerobat and was much smaller (wing span:
24’, length: 17’, empty wgt: 450 lbs) than the current build.
The current RAN S-7S (wing span: 29’, length: 23’, empty wgt: 730 lbs) was purchased/delivered earlier this year.
The fuselage frame, rudder, elevators, and stabilizer came powder coated as an option. At this time Bruce said he
has about 50 hours of build time, which included organizing and identifying parts, stapling small part bags to plywood
sheets (derived from the shipping container), and constructing the landing gear alignment tool (again constructed
using re-purposed material from the shipping container). Fuselage formers & stringers, floorboards, battery box,
battery access panel/frame, ELT, antenna mounts, and installation of the landing gear & brake assemblies were
among the first tasks to be completed in the winter & spring time frame. Recently, many summer evenings have
been spent cleaning miscellaneous steel metal parts via wire wheel/brush and then priming and painting them. The
engine will be a Rotax 912 at 100 hp and Bruce expects he place that order in about a year when the major structure
is nearly complete. He was asked about the pricing and estimates $25K for the kit, $19K for the engine, and $5K for
the paint.
Bruce was asked if he is building the kit under E-AB or E-LSA rules since each has unique long term maintenance
differences based on the build rules applied to the aircraft. While he is still undecided, both options remain viable
options since he hasn’t done any major modifications to the RANS kit.

Looking forward toward the battery box (NOTE: fuselage is upside down).
