A Royal Workout ‘Kate stayed super-fit by running and hitting the gym. That helps in bouncing back’ THURSDAY Top trainers dream up a weekly exercise regimen inspired by the sporty Duchess of Cambridge Day off or yoga Even the future Queen can take a day off from her exercise regimen. If Kate finds her schedule too full or just needs a break, that’s OK, say our experts. She may also decide to squeeze in an hour of yoga, which helps build strength, and improve flexibility and balance, as well as promoting relaxation, says Eva. THE BENEFITS “[When you exercise], essentially you’re looking to increase strength and increase your lean muscle mass,” says Stephanie. “The only time this actually physically happens is during rest.” And that’s not just on days off from the gym; it’s at night, too. “Sleep is everything. That’s when your body recovers,” says Stephanie. Taking a day off can also help you stay interested in your workout. “You don’t want to get so regimented with a routine that you end up fatiguing yourself, burning out and losing your inspiration,” says Eva. FRIDAY Swimming with prince William Monday WEDNESDAY Cardio walk with George and Lupo THE BENEFITS We don’t automatically think of a walk as a workout, but it’s one of the best forms of exercise, says fitness expert Stephanie Joanne. Personal trainer Eva Redpath recommends a brisk pace for 45 minutes. “It promotes excellent cardiovascular benefits, weight loss and support of lean muscle mass,” she says, and as Stephanie points out, you won’t even notice it’s exercise! Someone like Kate – about fivefoot-10 and 120 pounds – could burn 200 calories an hour. 80 hellomagazine.ca Jogging through Kensington park TUESDAY Pilates with Pippa The sisters don’t see each other nearly as much as they once did. They’d get both bonding time and some serious exercise if they signed up for a Pilates class together. Pippa practises at Pilates on the Go in London. “I have noticed a huge difference in my core strength and posture,” she has said. THE BENEFITS Kate isn’t just slim; she’s incredibly toned, which could be thanks to this workout. “Pilates can really help to strengthen major muscle groups, which is going to elongate the body and strengthen the core,” says Eva. If Kate and Pippa (or you!) are shy about practising in public, it’s easy to do Pilates at home. All you need is a mat, towel and a teacher or DVD. “You’re using your own body weight,” says Stephanie. Hitting the pavement is said to be Kate’s prescription for getting back into her pre-baby skinny jeans quickly. “Kate stayed super-fit by running and hitting the gym. That helps in bouncing back,” says a source. Then again, she’s always had a knack for speed. Her phys. ed. teacher Denise Allford recalls Kate as a “100-m.p.h. girl!” THE BENEFITS A woman of Kate’s size can burn about 500 calories running for an hour. If that’s not incentive enough, it’s great for your overall health. “All the big muscle groups in your legs are working, but the primary objective of running would be cardiovascular conditioning,” says Stephanie. Running is also good for competitive people like Kate, who enjoy working toward a goal such as a race or an improved time, adds Stephanie. Growing up, she beat many school records in front crawl and backstroke. She and William used to swim together many mornings while at university and today, it’s said she’s swims in the Buckingham Palace indoor pool. Like the royal couple, both our experts are big fans of swimming. “The cardio is fantastic. It’s low impact – you’re weightless in a pool, so you’re not pounding on cement. It’s an excellent way of exercising the full body as a unit,” says Eva. You don’t have to do lap after lap to notice a difference, she adds. “Even just treading water is going to put your heart rate right up.” SATURDAY/SUNDAY Fun and games Kate, a former field hockey captain, loves a good sporting match. On weekends, she and Pippa often play tennis, with their father, Michael, brother James or even William joining in. “The family was just ridiculously competitive,” says Kate’s uncle Gary Goldsmith. Come winter, the duke and duchess are also keen skiers. THE BENEFITS Sport makes fitness fun, notes Stephanie. “It’s playful and competitive,” she says. “You can motivate your friends to get healthy with you.” Tennis is great for strong and lean arms, says Eva, while skiing provides a mix of high and low cardio. Incorporating games into your workouts can also benefit your figure. “It’s all about training your body in different ways.” HELLO! 81
