Project overview
Built in the north of Istanbul - Turkey between
2013-2016, the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, or ‘Bosphorus
3’, as it is often called is part of the projected 260km
long Northern Marmara highway. Once complete, the
highway will bypass urban areas of Istanbul in the north
connecting Kınalı, Silivri in the west and Paşaköy, Hendek
in the east.
This suspension cable bridge is designed for both rail and
cars. It is the longest combined motorway / railway bridge
in the world and is the eighth longest suspension bridge.
Aside from its sheer length and size, the bridge is equally
significant for its powerful logistical positioning: when it
is finished, the new rail system running over the bridge
will include Marmaray and Istanbul Metro connecting
Asia and Europe, Ataturk Airport, Sabiha Gokcen Airport
and the third airport set to be opened in 2018. This is
important, not only for Turkey, but for the rest of the
world, as it will be part of a ‘New Silk Road’ linking China
and Europe by rail.

Product selection
Over the past fifteen years, the
state highways agency, KGM, has
specified Stirling Lloyd’s Eliminator
system for several successful high
profile collaborations in Turkey. Such
celebrated schemes include the
Osman Gazi Bridge, Fatih Sultan
Mehmet Bridge, Bosphorus Bridge
and Haliç Bridges. As a result, it
was the obvious choice for KGM to
select the Eliminator system for this
project, too.
For work of this scale and size,
it was essential that the bridge
deck waterproofing would
not only provide proven longlasting protection, but also allow
quick and easy application. Stirling
Lloyd’s Eliminator system addressed
both of these objectives.

The coating process began on 28th
March 2016 and was completed
on 24th April 2016, in time for the
bridge’s inauguration ceremony
on 26th August 2016. In total, the
Eliminator system was used to
cover 37,435 m2.
The application
For this project, there were two
separate areas to which the
Eliminator system needed to be
applied: the main bridge deck and
the walkways.
There were two elements to
the waterproofing process: the
preparation, directly followed by the
application of the waterproofing
system itself. Firstly the steel bridge
deck was prepared by shot blasting
using metallic grit. An inspection
by Stirling Lloyd’s Technical Team
confirmed that the preparation had
provided the Sa 2.5 Standard
specified. This was followed by
the cold, spray application of the
Eliminator system, the speed of
which was paramount to meet the
tight deadline on the project.
WET FILM THICKNESS TESTING
The authorised contractors, ICA,
were able to apply 1500m2 on
average of the bridge waterproofing
system per day, enabling quick
contract progression. This was
facilitated by the fact that each
element of the Eliminator system
cures in under an hour, allowing
the next element to be applied
immediately afterwards.

comments: “The Yavuz Selim Sultan
Bridge is an extremely important,
high profile project. The bridge will
play a key role in international trade
for many years to come, so we were
pleased to have been chosen to
provide the protection. As well as
being a major element of the new
rail system that will connect Europe
and Asia, highway traffic on the
existing Bosphorus bridges will also
be significantly reduced as a result
of this construction.
“Given all the hard work and time
that has gone into constructing the
bridge, there was added pressure to
ensure the Eliminator was applied
effectively to optimise protection
of the bridge for years to come. We
had a skilled team of workers on
board to make sure this objective
was met. With an impressive track
record on major projects across
the world, we are confident that our
product will stand the test of time,
reducing future maintenance costs
and the inherent disruption.”
Summary
Based on their positive
experiences in the
past, KGM turned to the
Eliminator system to
provide the long-lasting
protection that this high
profile structure required.
The system’s ease and
speed of application,
rapid curing, toughness,
durability and ability to
BRIDGE STANCHIONS
withstand difficult site
conditions meant that the
strict project programme
was maintained, while
these physical attributes
of the system will in
turn help to minimise
long-term maintenance
costs and extend the
service life of the bridge.
