elcome to Athlone, the largest town
on the majestic River Shannon. The
modern name Athlone comes from two Irish
words, “Ath” meaning a ford or crossing
point of a river and “Luain” a man’s name
and so means the ford of Luain.
Its beautiful riverside location opening on to
Lough Ree is the cornerstone of its attraction
and the source of its outstanding natural
beauty and lively atmosphere. Present day
Athlone is a busy and prosperous town
with an abundance of interesting tourist
attractions and excellent restaurants
each with its own distinctive character
catering for all the family. Dominating the
town is Athlone Castle Visitor Centre - a
Norman castle with panoramic views of
the Shannon. Features include exhibitions
on the siege of Athlone, famous tenor
John Count McCormack, Shannon wildlife,

in spring and autumn while the Shannon

LOCAL MYTHOLOGY
W
estmeath is steeped in mythology
and folklore and has been aptly
called a land of lake and legend.
The central focus point is the Hill of
Uisneach situated west of Mullingar
town between the villages of Ballymore
and Loughnavalley.
The Hill of Uisneach was the ancient
seat of the Kings of Meath and it was
linked to Tara in County Meath by a
chariot road.
In ancient times the country was
divided up into provinces by people
known as the Firbolgs. Their meeting
place was Ail na Maireann meaning the
Stone of the Divisions or Catstone as it
is commonly called. It is situated on the
Royal Hill of Uisneach. The Catstone is
said to be the burial ground of Eiru the Triple Goddess after which Ireland
( Eire) is called.
The great assembly that took place at
Uisneach was very important with fiscal
and local affairs being discussed. Here
the great feast of Bealtaine (meaning
May) was celebrated. Music, history,
poetry and genealogy were all part of
the entertainment. Two great fires were
lit in honour of Beal - the sun god and
the cattle were driven through the two
fires to preserve them from sickness
throughout the coming year.
This historic site is located on private
land but is accessible for group visits
by prior appointment. Tel David Clarke

May 2010
At Lough Owel, north of Mulllingar, just
off the N4 view the sculpture inspired
by the Children of Lir legend.
On the western side of Lough Owel is
Frewin Hill. Frewin was a favourite
stronghold of King Eochaid Airem who
features in the legend Midir and Etain.
The subjects of this myth are adultery
and rebirth, the 7 Deadly Sins and the
old story of man V woman .
You can meander back to Mullingar past
rich pastureland or choose a longer
option and take up the Tain Trail.
The Tain Trail. - On this historic route
you will follow in the steps of ancient
Irish warriors who were travelling east
to capture the Brown Bull of Cooley in
the legend of Tain Bo Cuailgne.
Lough Derravaragh
Lough Derravaragh
The famous legend the Children of Lir
is associated with Lough Derrvaragh in
north Westmeath. The main theme of
this legend is that of Exile and Return.
Beautiful depictions of this story are
located in stained glass windows of
the 12th Century Franciscan Friary in
Multyfarnham.
The Wonder of Ireland art exhibition
depicting the great characters of
the Irish Myth cycles was opened in
Belvedere House, Gardens & Park (044
9349060) and a second art exhibition is
housed in Fore Abbey Coffee Shop (044

Carnakilla cottages, unique timber built
cottages; are situated on the shores of Lough
Ree/River Shannon. We adjoin the vast and
wonderful Portlick Woodland walks area, and
this idyllic setting provides the location for the
ideal holiday - to get away from the hustle and
bustle of the world, in the heartland of Ireland.
The houses are all timber inside and have a
very cosy feeling. They also have been built
in the most sustainable way utilising as many
14
local materials from the area and also from
Lough Ree. A recent upgrade of an old thatch
barn as a party room or communal space has
proven a great success where all the family or

FESTIVAL OF FIRES
Hill of Uisneach
The Festival of the Fires, Europe’s
oldest festival and one recounted in
dozens of historic texts is returning.
The event, which historically took place
at the Hill of Uisneach in Co. Westmeath
- the most significant and sacred hill on
the island of Ireland, the true residence
of the High Kings of Ireland and a place
where all clans, tribes and chiefs came
together to pass laws, trade and renew
allegiance to each other and to the
Goddess Ériu (after whom the country is
named) - will be staged in May 2010.
The festival will be a cultural celebration
on a national scale; a festival unlike any
other, designed for both a national and
international audience and created
through the alchemy of ceremony,
music, theatre, literature, holistic
health, art, crafts and more. It will
feature the collective talents of artists,
performers, craftspeople and hundreds
more participants from Ireland and
beyond.’
