Sacred Valley
Maras & Moray
Located approximately 50km from Cusco, this large complex of Inca ruins include several enormous
circular depressions that were, perhaps, used to study the effects of climatic conditions on crops. Near
the Maras Village are the famous salt works, constituted by about 3000 small pools constructed in the
Qaqawiñay mountain. The solid salt is beaten, granulated, packed then sold in the region’s markets.
Ollantaytambo
Located about 60km from Cusco, this is the entrance to the Inca Trail. This town was the royal state of
Emperor Pachacuti during the Inca Empire and in the Spanish conquest of Peru it served as a stronghold
for Manco Inca Yupanqui, leader of the Inca resistance.
Pisac Market
The Pisac village is well known for its market every Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, which attracts heavy
tourist traffic from nearby Cusco. The whole town has been converted into a street market where you
will find all kinds of handicrafts, antiques and Alpaca wool clothing and a section where the real local
market of fruits, vegetables and even meat of different kinds are sold.
Chinchero Village
Just about an hour from Cusco is Chinchero, a small village, with beautiful views of the Sacred Valley.
Adobe homes, narrow cobbled streets and people in traditional dresses make it a charming place. Visit
the church built on foundations of an Incan palace, see the woman weaving the wool and buy
souvenirs to take home at the Sunday market.
Tiobamba Village
This is a very special experience. The Tiobamba Village consists of a beautiful old church set out in the
middle of nowhere, surrounded by a wall, which protects the few dogs, and 2 families who inhabited
the town. This tiny town is the perfect setting for a meal.
