Course Description and Supply List
Course Description
Are you a sucker for a gorgeous piece
(or pack) of paper? Are your prettiest
ones so precious that they get hoarded
and never see the light of day? Maybe
you have patterned paper, text pages,
printed images, old maps, tissue
papers, hand painted or hand stamped
pages. And maybe, just maybe, that’s
just scratching the surface. GASP! So
what is that paper collector to do?
Why, create collages, of course!
If you have TONS of paper, or you
just happen to like it a lot, you must
join me in Collage Adventures! This 3
Week/4 Lesson workshop will focus
on creating collages using paper and
glue, but we will also add in a bit of
fabric or trim, paper crafting
embellishments, and/or whatever is
lying on your craft table…or on the
floor! Be prepared to use up your stash of goodies!
In this class students will:
 Learn the basics of how to collage.
 Learn which adhesives and papers work best.
 Learn to keep a notebook for daily warm up exercises. You gotta stretch your collage
muscles!
 Take a virtual field trip to view works from various past and present collage artists. Learn
what styles or materials they use that make your creative heart sing.
 View loads of the instructors collage examples.

General Supply List
 Collage Papers - These can include, but are not limited to: patterned paper, maps, book
text, vintage images, wrapping paper, junk mail, scraps, graph paper, hand painted
papers, hand stamped papers, deli paper, tracing paper, magazines, handmade paper,
newspaper, copies of personal photos, cardboard, paper bags, post cards, ephemera,
litter, tickets, labels, schedules, confetti, lists, paper towels, posters, gift bags, repurposed
birthday cards, crossword puzzles, tissue paper, phone book pages, tags, paper doilies,

 Adhesive – For our collages, I recommend fluid matte medium or an archival PVA for
thinner papers and regular gel medium or heavy gel medium for thicker papers,
depending on which types of papers you will be using. For the daily collage notebook, a
glue stick is fine (UHU brand seems to be best) as are those mediums previously listed.
Mod Podge is not recommended for this workshop as it yellows over time.
 Paint brush for glue, optional
 Cutting tools - such as scissors, paper trimmer, craft knife, self-healing mat
 Credit card, bone folder, or brayer
 Non-stick craft mat or table covering
 Wax paper, optional

ribbons, etc. Whatever you want to use.

playing cards, loose pieces of cardboard or chipboard, etc. Or use your art journal
or even loose papers. Your choice.
o Glue – Glue stick is glue stick is fine (UHU brand seems to be best) as are those
mediums previously listed, above.

Lesson Three: Themed Collages
o Support for your collage base – choose one or several:
 Paper - Heavy paper like 140 pound watercolor paper. (Hot press is
smooth, cold press is textured). Or feel free to work in your art journal.
 Cardboard or chipboard
 Stretched canvas – try several small sized canvases, like 5” x 5”
 Canvas board – I like the 8” x 10” size.
o If you will be adding any heavy or 3 dimensional items to these collages, please
have an appropriate adhesive.
o Coloring tools, optional - such as: pens, colored pencils, markers, watercolor
paints, spray inks, stamps, ink pads, stencils, acrylic paints, etc.

Lesson Four: Collaged Cards with Stitched Details
o Three or more large pieces (at least 8” x 10”) of fairly heavy paper that will be
collaged and cut up for the card fronts. I will be using 140lb watercolor paper.
Heavier paper will stand up best to wet adhesives.
o Coloring tools, optional - such as: pens, colored pencils, markers, watercolor
paints, spray inks, stamps, ink pads, stencils, acrylic paints, etc.
o Folded card bases – your choice color and size. I will be making 5” x 7” cards.
o Card Sentiments – You will either print your own from your computer onto
cardstock or use sentiment stamps, ink, etc.
o Embroidery needle and embroidery thread, like DMC or Cotton Pearle
o Paper piercer
o Sewing machine, thread, optional, for machine stitching
o Focal Image/Embellishment - Maybe you want to use a clip art image as your
focal point? Or a scrapbook embellishment? Stamped image? Metal charm? Etc.
Again, please have an appropriate adhesive.
