Rock Climbers In Action In Snowdonia – BACK IN PRINT !!
Tony Smythe & John Cleare
Mountain Camera, 2016 reprint, 197pp, pictorial hardback, New, signed
by Tony Smythe and John Cleare.
Similar to the original 1966 edition, if rather fatter, it contains over a
hundred of John Cleare’s photographs in a new layout – the original
thirty nine plus many others that ‘got away’ in 1966 – together with Tony
Smythe’s original text and a few other interesting additions. The First
Edition became over the years something of a rare book, both in Britain
and America, and much prized by those who recall the sixties scene in
Wales or who aspire to repeat the celebrated routes of the period.

My Father, Frank. Unresting Spirit of Everest - by Tony Smythe
At last a biography of this great mountaineer, photographer and writer,
written by one of his sons. Doug Scott said of the book, 'I can only
compliment Tony Smythe on dealing with all the major events in his
father's life in the most even-handed way….. The book does not lack
humour either, and I found myself smiling, sometimes laughing out loud'.
It was only through writing 'My Father, Frank' that he discovered his father
had actually discovered Mallory's body on Everest in 1936.
Baton Wicks, 2013 First Edition, First Printing, 324pp, hardback
New in dustwrapper, signed by Tony Smythe, bumped to top corners £10

association copy as Bartrum was a member of Abraham's party to Skye in 1904 and his name appears a number
of times in the text. There is a postcard of the Quiraing tipped in the book which Bartrum sent from Skye to Eva
Bartrum in 1918. It is also interesting to note some minor annotation in the text which was likely made by Bartrum
as the dates are Aug 1918. 61655, £280

Souvenirs Pittoresques des Glaciers de
Chamouny
Gabriel Charton Gabriel
Tony Astill, 2016 First Edition, 64pp, hardback,
29 x 21 cm, 18 coloured illustrations with
tissue guards, New in dustwrapper.
The most rare of all Alpine books now
published in facsimile almost 200 years after it
was first published. In the annals of Alpine
Literature one book that has escaped the
attention of historians and bibliographers,
Coolidge, Mathews, Montagnier, Perret,
Meckly et al is ‘Souvenirs Pittoresques des
Glaciers de Chamouny’. Published in 1821 it
was for sale in Geneva from Gabriel Charton
(Genève 1775-1853) an artist who is not well
known, although having been one of the first to introduce lithography to Switzerland. Illustrated with 18 dessins
colories which are exquisitely executed by hand and of exceptional quality, representing works of art in their own
right are accompanied by descriptive text. This was the very first illustrated guide for those who desired to travel
the road from Geneva to Chamonix. Each view is tipped into place on heavier card and the process may have
become too painstaking and therefore too expensive to continue and perhaps the reason why only two other
copies have been traced and none of the major Swiss or Alpine Club libraries possess one. The original text,
being in French, has been lovingly translated into English and so there is now a page in each language to
accompany each view. £35

half title by a previous owner. 63000, £260 other copies available, please enquire.
Whillans, Haston, Estcourt, Bonington, Official Annapurna South Face Expedition 1970 Souvenir Postcard
Stamped Base Camp 1970, Very good condition signed by Martin Boysen, Dougal Haston, Don Whillans, Chris
Bonington, Nick Estcourt, Mick Burke, Tom Frost, Mike Thompson, Kelvin Kent and the ink stamp signature of Ian
Clough, who sadly died in an avalanche on the expedition., I understand a batch of 1000 of these postcards were
produced and all were signed by the ten members of the expedition (some were also signed by the expedition's
doctor, Dave Lambert). Sadly, many of these postcards never reached their destination. Left at a post office in
Kathmandu before the expedition set off for Annapurna, many were stolen, the stamps steamed off and the cards
thrown away. Ian Clough was in charge of supplies and arrived late in Kathmandu. The expedition members
completed the signatures by using a rubber stamp of his signature. 63236, £195

Workman Fanny Bullock, Peaks and Glaciers of Nun Kun. A record of pioneer-exploration and
mountaineering in the Punjab Himalaya., Constable and Company Ltd, 1909 First Edition, xv, 204pp, 92 illusts,
map, original decorative grey cloth, t.e.g., exlibrary, numbers to spine and a couple of ink stmps but otherwise no
evidence and very clean indeed, professionally recased with new endpapers, a strong tight copy, VG., In 1906,
the pioneering couple Fanny Bullock Workman and her husband William Hunter Workman, claimed an ascent of
Pinnacle Peak. They also toured extensively through the Nun Kun massif and produced a map; however,
controversy surrounded the Workmans' claims, and few trigonometrical points were given for the region, so that
the map they produced was not usable. 61944, £650

portraits), 2 folding maps, original decorative boards, t.e.g., gilt lettering to spine faint, bottom corners slightly
bumped, first signs of foreedge foxing, light foxing to endpapers, rear of maps and slightly more so to the

Fisher Unwin, 1899 First Edition, xvi, 269pp, 55 illusts,
original decorative red cloth, t.e.g., minor crease line on
rear board, small worn spot at the top of the rear board,
ragged edge to contents page, internally very clean
indeed, VG+. A most attractive copy of an extremely
scarce title., A major part of the book is related to the
Karakoram expedition in 1892 with Martin Conway and
the expedition to New Zealand in 1894/5 with FitzGerald.
It was on the Karakoram trip he met FitzGerald whom he
impressed and FitzGerald hired him as his guide for the
next five years. In New Zealand they intended to make
the first ascent of Mount Cook, but local climbers, alarmed
that their highest mountain might first be climbed by
foreigners, climbed it a few days after FitzGerald's arrival.
They made the first ascent of Mount Sefton, and with the
New Zealander Jack Clarke (who had made the first
ascent of Mount Cook), made first ascents of Mount
Sealy, Mount Silberhorn, Mount Tasman and Mount
Haidinger. £1,400

Noel Capt J.B.L., Everest - Official Mount Everest
Expedition 1924 Postcard., , 1924, Expedition Postcard
stamped 'Best Wishes - J.B.L. Noel. Captain. Mt. Everest
Expedition.', bears Mount Everest Expedition stamp and
Base Camp postmark, one small edge tear, very good
condition. A most collectable Everest item., This postcard
has an interesting history. Climbing Everest is a huge
financial undertaking and every climber hopes to recoup at
least some of his or her investment after the climb through
lectures, films, pictures or advertising. To do this you need
to capture public attention before, during, and after the
climb. In 1924, before the age of television and the Internet
it was hard to keep the public's attention focused on people
climbing Mt. Everest. To solve this problem, Captain John
Noel, the expedition photographer, came up with a unique
idea for the time. He publicised the expedition by
advertising in a daily newspaper that he would send a
unique expedition postcard from Mt. Everest's Tibet Base
camp to anyone who sent in their name and address.
There was an overwhelming response to his ad and
thousands of postcards were sent from Base camp back to
England. At the bottom of the postcard he advertised the
film he would be producing about the climb - Noel's way of
recouping some money. 63213, £60

Putting South Georgia On The Map by Alec Trendall
Although South Georgia was visited with increasing frequency after its
discovery by Captain Cook in 1775, and was for a long time a busy
base for the sealing and whaling industries, a properly surveyed map
of the island was not published until 1958. That map resulted from a
series of small privately-organised expeditions – the South Georgia
Surveys – initiated and led by Duncan Carse. Alec Trendall, who
served as geologist with the South Georgia Surveys of 1951-52 and
1953-54, tells for the first time the full story of Carse's expeditions to
