Get into the extreme right hand lane and make a right at the first traffic light onto Liberty Street. Follow Street to the sixth traffic light and make a left onto East Broad Street. At the second traffic light, make a right onto President Street. Drive approximately five miles on President Street. Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah will be on the right. From Hilton Head/Beaufort SC Follow US 17 south over the Talmadge Bridge. Get off at the Oglethorpe Street exit and follow Oglethorpe. At the sixth stop light, make a left onto East Broad Street. Make an immediate right on President Street. Drive approximately five miles on President’s Street. Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah will be on the right. From Southside Savannah Take the Truman Parkway North towards Downtown Savannah. Take the US 80 east through Thunderbolt, up over the Thunderbolt Bridge and through Whitemarsh Island. Make a left onto the Islands Expressway/President Street just after the Whitemarsh Plaza. Follow the Islands Expressway/President Street for 1.3 miles and make a left into Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah. From Tybee Island Follow US 80 West 10 miles through Wilmington/ Talahi Island. Bear to the right at the split of US 80 and Island Expressway/President Street. WORKSHOPS January & February 2012 at Oatland Island Wildlife Center Have you always wanted to know how to knit or weave or... ? This is the perfect time in a low cost, stress-free environment to get a taste of the fiber arts to see if its something you would enjoy. Each class is 3 hours and class size is limited to 8 participants for more hands-on learning. Children 8 -12 years old are welcome accompanied by an adult.(*exception- Batik) Cost: $20 for guild members $25 for non-guild members Now is your opportunity to learn the basic techniques necessary to create in a variety of the fiber arts. Our talented teachers will guide you through the beginning process of these fiber arts. Sign up for one workshop or all of them. If you are interested in learning more... we plan to schedule intermediate workshops in the future. Our Taste of... Instructors: Nel Adams is a fiber artist specializing in knitting and spinning. She owned a yarn shop in Rochester, NY and currently works part-time at UnWInd where she teaches several classes. Mary Cromartie Bass is originally from North Carolina where she learned to crochet from her dear Aunt Sissy. She moved to Savannah and has been teaching art at Hubert Middle School for many years. Crochet is her favorite of the fiber arts. “I look forward to sharing it with you.” Workshops Taste of... Knitting with Nel Adams Sat. Jan. 28 -- 1-4pm Learn how to cast-on and bind off as well as the basic stitches of knit and purl. Students should bring #8 or #9 knitting needles, about 100 yd of worsted weight yarn and a desire to learn. This will be good to make a scarf. Jamie Galloway received her Master of Fine Arts degree in fibers from the Savannah College of Art and Design and is currently working to organize a network of fiber related farms and businesses in the Low Country. Her work celebrates the importance of community based living and the values by which living arts and handicrafts can sustain a healthy existence. She follows a practice rooted in Slow Design, using sustainable materials and processes. Suzy Hokanson is a retired art teacher and has been a fiber artist all her life and a weaver for the past 35 years. Suzy has woven on cardboard looms to computerized Jacquard looms and EVERYTHING in between. She is the current President of the FIber Guild of the Savannahs. Suzy wrote a book about the weavers of the Bauhaus... Woven: a Bauhaus Memoir. Mary Kelly is a retired college art teacher who has been creating and teaching the fiber arts for many years. Mary is an accomplished painter and her hand-dyed, hand-spun, hand-woven pieces can be seen in area galleries. She is the author of several books and articles about embroidery. Sally Kroehnke is a professor in the Fibers Department at Savannah College of Art and Design. She teaches a varieties of fiber art such as spinning, knitting, crochet, weaving, quilting, dyeing and repeat pattern design. For more information about our Taste of... Jan. 29 -- 1-4pm Learn to extract color from locally sourced plants, fruits and vegetables. Students will learn Japanese Shibori tie-dye methods to create patterns on fabric in the dye bath, and eco-bundling techniques which create an element of surprise each time the fabric is unveiled. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring a lightly colored natural fiber (ie 100%cotton) t-shirt or garment to work with. Materials fee = $5 Taste of... Felting with Jamie Galloway Sat. Feb. 11 -- 1-4pm Felt is a nonwoven cloth that can be made into any shape or size. Learn how to turn natural sheep’s wool into a sturdy sheet of fabric using soap, water, and a little elbow grease. Students will choose from a colorful selection of wools to felt into a small tote bag or bowl by the end of the workshop. Materials fee = $5 Taste of... Crochet with Mary Bass Sun. Feb. 12 -- 1-4pm Come explore the fiber art of crochet. Learn the basic stitches, chain, single crochet, double crochet. Learn enough to make a scarf. Bring crochet hook and worsted weight yarn. Taste of... Batik with Mary Kelly Sat. Feb. 18 10:30-2pm *Age limit- 15 yr(due to hot wax) +$10 material fee Learn the classic dyeing technique of batik using dyes on natural fabrics. The dyes need to cure in the sun so we will need a sunny day or we can iron them to develop color. Each student will pay for a silk scarf which will be completed within the class time. Taste of... Spinning with Sally Kroehnke Sat. Feb. 25 -- 1-4pm Get a taste of how one can take wool fibers and create yarn for the first time. Through the act of spinning one develops a new understanding and appreciation of the craft that is also an art. Take a journey into past cultures from around the world and learn the meditative rhythms that make this craft such an enticing art form Taste of... Weaving with Suzy Hokanson Sun. Feb. 26 -- 1-4pm Learn how to make your own simple looms out of everyday corregated cardboard. An amulet (small pouch) that is finished on all sides will be created as you warp and weave on these looms. Once the process is learned you can go on to weave pillow tops, handbags, glasses or cell phone cases and more! Students will also be able to try weaving on the floor looms in our Fiber Guild studio at Oatland. Materials provided or bring leftover yarns.
