They are called the Black
Robes because they wore
long, Black Robes.
FATHER PIERRE JEAN DE SMET
•
Father De Smet was a
Jesuit priest. He had
come to teach the native
Americans about the
bible. But he didn't stay
for long, he later moved
more into Oregon
country.
OTHER PRIESTS BUILD A
MISSION
•
The first Catholic mission
in Idaho was the mission
of Sacred Heart. Father
Nicholas Point and the
Coeur d' Alene's helped
build the mission and a
few years later father
Anthony Ravalli joined
the mission and built a
church.
