Knowing Africa is a continent.
Exploring the countries and features of africa
The term will last for:
5 1/2 weeks
French and Language of the Month
French will be covered once a week, covering a range of different
topics each term. This term Year 5 will be looking at:



Colours
Animals
Number
Personal, Health, Social and Community Education (P.H.S.C.E.)
During this half term we will be looking at ourselves and what
we hope to achieve in this new year!
English:
Mathematics In Mathematics this term pupils will be learning to:
Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo
Bertie rescues an orphaned white lion cub from the African veld. They are inseparable until Bertie is sent to
boarding school far away in England and the lion is sold to
a circus. Bertie swears that one day they will see one another again, but it is the butterfly lion which ensures that
their friendship will never be forgotten.





Develop an appreciation for a new author
Write a character description and a newspaper report
Continue to develop grammar skills





Converting units of measure
Using formal written methods of addition.
It would be great if you could ask your child what they
have been learning about in guided reading to reinforce
the learning that takes place.
Art and Design Technology
We will be working on masks inspired by Africa and over this whole term we will
also be looking at electrical systems.
Computing (previously called I.C.T.)
Wherever possible, we will give children the opportunity to use ICT across the curriculum. This half term we will be using computers as part of our art project.
Music
We will be listening to and discussing African music in our dance lessons.
We will also be looking at democracy, citizenship and celebrating
diversity.
P.E.
This half term pupils will be learning dance. We will look at how
movement and rhythm in particular.
Shared home learning:
Please spend 10 minutes, as a minimum, reading with your child everyday. Spellings will be given out weekly and tests will be on a Monday/ We will be giving out a new homework grid for the space topic soon. This homework will need to be handed in on the Monday of the last week of term. (12/12/16).
Important Dates
All P.E. lessons take place on Thursday afternoons. If your
child could have their P.E. kits in school at all times, this would
be useful. Outdoor and indoor kit will be needed as lessons will
be weather dependent.
