Chemistry 1 H Chapter 7 Part 1 Notes Block 4.notebook May 02, 2017 Chapter 7 Part 1 Writing formulas and names for compounds. Objectives: 1. Write names and formulas for ionic compounds. 2. Write names and formulas for binary covalent compounds. 3. Write names and formulas for acids. I. Ionic compounds 1. Positive ion is always written first in name and formula 2. Ionic compounds are always written empirically. 3. Oxidation #'s of elements must total zero. Use subscripts to balance formulas. 4. If an ion has more than 1 charge, a roman numeral is used to designate the charge in the name. For example: Tin II is tin with a +2 charge. Tin IV is tin with a +4 charge. The roman numeral designates the charge of the ion. 5. If a subscript is used with a polyatomic ion, write parentheses around the polyatomic ion and write the subscript outside the parentheses. monatomic ion one atom "Na+" polyatomic ion more than one atom "SO42" Ionic compounds are formed from a metal and a nonmetal.
