What is the source of all of
our food?
The sun!!!
What are t wo things we need
to sur vive that plants give
us?
Oxygen and Food!
What is photosynthesis
Photosynthesis- the process
by which a plant cell captures
energy in sunlight and uses it
to make food.
What does photosynthesis
mean in Greek?
photo=light
synthesis=to put together
List all the things a plant
needs to photosynthesize
Water
Carbon Dioxide
Energy from the Sun
Is energy released or stored
during photosynthesis?
Energy is stored during
photosynthesis
Were plants the first
organisms (a living thing) to
develop photosynthesis?
No!
What t wo organisms besides
plants can photosynthesize?
Algae (a type of protist) and
cyanobacteria
What part of the plant takes
in water?
The Roots! The water then
moves up the plant stem to
the leaves
What part of the plant takes
in carbon dioxide and releases
water?
The stomata which are found
on the underside of the leaf
What does photosynthesis
produce?
Glucose (sugar) and oxygen
What is the light color plants
don’t use?
Green! It is reflected from the
leaf and that is what our eye
sees. This is why plants appear
green.
What part of the plant does
photosynthesis occur in?
The leaf
!
(remember
our
photosynt
hesis leaf
models)
What is the sugar called that
is produced by
photosynthesis?
Glucose
What is one of the first
organisms to
photosynthesize that is still
around today?
Cyanobacteria is one of the first
organisms to photosynthesize.
Fossils of cyanobacteria in Australia
date back to 3.5 billion years ago
What cell organelle does
photosynthesis occur in?
The chloroplast
What is the pigment in
chloroplasts that is
responsible for absorbing
sunlight?
Chlorophyll
Why does the plant
photosynthesize?
To produce its own food
Plants use only about half of the
sugar they produce to grow.
What happens to the sugar the
plant does not use?
Leftover sugars are stored in stem,
seeds, fruit, and roots.
!
We obtain the energy from these plants
by eating the plant itself sometimes,
such as with bananas and and apples.
What are colored chemical
compounds that absorb light
called?
Pigments!
Chlorophyll and carotenoids
are types of pigments
Does soil provide the plant
with food?
No! Plants produce their own
food through photosynthesis
and get the water they need
for this process in the soil
What is the term that
describes lab techniques
that are used to
separate mixtures
Chromatography
!
We used rubbing alcohol and coffee filters
to separate pigments of leaves in our lab
What does chromatography
mean in Greek?
Chromo=color
!
Graphy=write
What is the chemical
equation for photosynthesis?
This is the chemical equation
for photosynthesis
light
6 H2O + 6 CO2 —-———-> C6H12O6 + 6 O2
How many stages are there in
photosynthesis?
Two!
!
There are t wo stages of
photosynthesis.
What is cellular respiration?
Cellular Respiration is the
process by which cells obtain
energy from glucose (sugar)
How many stages are there in
cellular respiration?
Two!
!
Cellular respiration has t wo stages. The first stage takes
place in cytoplasm and glucose is broken into smaller
molecules. The second stage takes place in the
mitochondria and the reaction requires oxygen and
releases a lot of energy
Is energy released or stored
during cellular respiration?
Energy is released during
cellular respiration
What cell organelle does
respiration take place in?
Mitochondria
What is mitochondria
sometimes called because it
creates energy?
Mitochondria is also called
the powerhouse of the cell!
What is needed (the
reactants) for cellular
respiration to occur?
Sugar and Oxygen
What are the products of
cellular respiration?
The products of respiration
are carbon dioxide and water
What is the chemical
equation for cellular
respiration?
This is the chemical equation
for cellular respiration
C6H12O6 + 6 O2 -> 6 H2O + 6 CO2 + energy
What is the process by which
a cell breaks down molecules
to release energy with OUT
using oxygen?
Fermentation.
Which releases more energy:
cellular respiration or
fermentation?
Cellular respiration releases
more energy than
fermentation
Do plants use cellular
respiration?
YES!!! All living things use cellular respiration
to live. That is how they get the energy to
carry out the functions of life. If you put a
plant in a bag it will collect water which is
one of the products of respiration.
List three things that
photosynthesis and
respiration have in common
Both photosynthesis and
respiration occur in t wo
stages, involve energy, and
are beneficial to life. The
reactants on one process are
the products of the other
process
