The Sabbathday Lake Shakers - Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village

Yet again, the season of
Advent draws near; that
time when we observe
through
introspection
the coming of the Christ
in Jesus, who continues
to enter the world and
affect lives, as he did at
Bethlehem. During these
weeks before Christmas,
we focus upon Hope, Peace, Joy, and especially
Love. It is our prayer that you will all be filled
with these gifts, in abundance.
As you plan your holiday giftgiving, we are pleased to offer
to you our old-time favorites, as
well as several new items.
These delectable treats are
designed to please even the
most discriminating palate. We
hope you, your family, and your friends enjoy our
holiday offerings.

Shaker Fieldstone Food Slabs. The Shakers
have cultivated their land since 1783. The hedgerows are piled
with stones picked from the croplands each spring. These
naturally beautiful food slabs are created from polished slices of
Shaker fieldstones deposited in the earth by glaciers eons ago.
No two stones are alike and each provides a striking presentation
for beverages, sliced cheese,
hors d'oeuvres, meat, fruit,
bread, and more. Also use as
a trivet, under potted plants,
and atop vanities for soap,
cosmetics and more. Slabs are
typically multicolor with
striking combinations of
minerals. Stamped on the
reverse with the name:
Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village. PLEASE NOTE: Colors vary
and all slabs are irregular, according to the shape of the stone
from which they were cut. Produced for Sabbathday Lake
Shaker Village by American Stonecraft in Lowell, MA.

Hand-Turned “Elder Joseph” Maple
Bowls.
In 1898, the
Shakers planted a maple tree
to honor the life of Elder
Joseph Brackett (1797-1882)
who is perhaps best-known as
the composer in 1848 of the
famous Shaker song, Simple
Gifts.
This monumental
maple tree stood in the middle
of Shaker Village for 116years before it had to be removed. The wood from each limb was
carefully cut and set aside for friend Peter Asselyn of Durham,
Maine, who has hand-turned dozens of beautiful bowls in various
sizes to memorialize “Elder Joseph”, both the man and the tree.

SOME OF THE SHAKERS’
CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
The first Christmas Meeting at
Sabbathday Lake was held in 1794
for the dedication of the newlycompleted Meeting House. Each
year thereafter, Christmas Day was
kept holy with religious services.
PLACING AN ORDER
In 1876, under the direction of
Maine Ministry Elder Otis Sawyer
and with the approval of the Mount
Lebanon
NY
Ministry, the
Sabbathday Lake Shakers observed
their first secular Christmas Night
celebration with a special banquet,
an ornament-laden fir tree lit with candles, gifts exchanged by all
members of the Community, and a festive pageant conducted by the
children and young adults.
Please use the enclosed ORDER FORM to complete your
Christmas order. To ensure delivery before Christmas Day, please
mail orders with payment no later than December 10th.
In the early 1900s through the good efforts of Brother Delmer Wilson,
Santa Claus, donning a long, raccoon-fur coat, first appeared to present
tokens to all members of the Community.
A GIFT OF MEMBERSHIP
After electricity was installed at Shaker Village in 1926, the candles on
the Christmas tree were replaced with strands of colorful, electric
lights. One of the Sisters wrote in her diary “it is the prettiest tree we
have ever had.” By this time, decorated Christmas trees were regularly
kept in the Dwelling House, Trustees’ Office, and Girls’ Shop.
The Friends of the Shakers. The Friends of the
Shakers, a non-profit organization founded in 1974, supports the
Sabbathday Lake Shakers and Shaker Village in a variety of
ways. With more than 360 members from across the country,
and internationally, this group donates time, talents and financial
contributions, which are crucial to the perseverance of the Shaker
tradition. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities that
support the Shakers, and help to preserve Shaker Village as a
National Historic Landmark and an educational & cultural center,
please consider membership in this organization. Benefits
include: a quarterly newsletter, The Clarion, which features
organizational news, scholarship, and Shaker Village activities;
free admission to the Shaker Museum; and $5 discount on all
Shaker
Museum
workshops.
Please
see
www.friendsoftheshakers.org for more information and for
secure, online membership registration.
Today, our Christmas Season includes the four Sundays of Advent, each
with specially prepared readings on the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy and
Love. We gather with a small group of family and friends on Christmas
Eve for a worship service and a large, shared meal before we exchange
gifts around the Christmas tree in the Dining Room. That tree is
decorated with some of the original, mercury-glass bulbs that were first
used by the Shakers in 1876 – a special remembrance of those faithful
souls who have gone on before. We observe Christmas Day with a midmorning worship service in much the same manner established by our
First Parents 220-years ago.
Merry Christmas from
The Sabbathday Lake Shakers
