The River Nile
The Nile is thought to be the longest river in the world. It is 6,650 kilometers long. The Nile flows
from the mountains in the middle of Africa to the Nile Delta. There are two branches to the Nile.
There is the White Nile and the Blue Nile. The White Nile starts in East Africa, and the Blue Nile
starts in Ethiopia. The two branches join together in Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan. Most of
the water for the White Nile comes from Lake Victoria, and most of the water for the Blue Nile
comes from Lake Tana.
The name of this river comes from the Greek language. The Greek word nelios means river. The Nile
flows through 11 different countries. Many animals live in and around the river. There are crocodiles,
frogs, turtles, hippopotamus, baboons, and many more. The crocodiles that live in the Nile are the
largest crocodiles in Africa. There are also over 300 hundred different species of birds that live
around the Nile.
