DESCRIPTION
INDICATIONS
• Gold-standard compression therapy: 4-layer compression bandage
system.
COMPOSITION:
• Layer 1: K-SOFT (sub-compression wadding, viscose, polyester)
- Allows for even distribution of pressure and helps to protect bony
prominences.
- Non-woven, with a good absorbency and fluid retention, extra
resilience and cushioning.
- Soft, conformable and comfortable.
• Layer 2: K-LITE: light support bandage type 2 (viscose, polyester,
elastane)
- Base for compression – modern fibre construction offers exceptional
comfort and conformability.
- Knitted with 2-waty stretch for excellent conformability
- Maintains original position with no slippage.
• Layer 3: K-PLUS: light support bandage type 3a (viscose, elastane)
- First compression layer, providing a sub-bandage pressure of up
to 20 mmHg at the ankle.
- May be used on its own over sub-bandage wadding or as the third
layer in the UrgoK4 / K-Four multi-layer compression bandage
system.
- Washable and reusable.
• Layer 4: KO-FLEX: cohesive long-stretch bandage (acrylic, cotton,
elastane, cohesive material containing low levels of natural latex)
- Provides 17 – 20mmHg pressure to obtain an average 40 mmHg
at the ankle as the top layer of the UrgoK4 / K-Four compression
system and maintains the bandage system in place.
- Cohesive nature ensuring that the UrgoK4 / K-Four bandage system
stays in place for up to 7 days.
- Contains low levels of natural latex.
- Washable, reusable and tearable, avoiding wastage.
• Specific to the 25-30cm and 30cm+ UrgoK4 / K-Four kits:
K-THREEC: type 3c high compression bandage: provides the extra
pressure necessary in the 25-30cm and 30cm+ kits to ensure the
correct application of 40mmHg for larger ankles (Ref: LaPLace’s
Law) (viscose, elastane)
• Urgo K4/K-Four is indicated for the treatment of venous leg ulcers
and the reduction of associated chronic venous oedema (i.e. patients
with an ABPI > 0.8).
For health professionals:
• Application of the correct pressure (circa 40 mmHg) at the ankle
• Improved healing of venous leg ulcers
• Pressure maintained for up to 7 days
• High absorbency
• Provides “Gold standard” compression therapy
• Choice of ready-to-use kits for different ankle sizes
• All kits for ankle > 25cm ankles contain longer length bandages
For patients:
• Improved healing of venous ulcers
• Massage effect when walking (low resting pressure, higher pressure
on walking), helping to improve venous return and oedema reduction
• Comfortable to wear
• All kits for ankle > 25cm ankles contain longer length bandages
METHOD OF USE
Before applying the bandages:
• Examine the shape of the leg and identify any areas at risk of
excessive pressure (i.e. bony prominences)
• Protect and reshape leg with wadding (K-SOFT) if necessary. If a
wound is present, apply an appropriate dressing before applying
any bandages.
• Measure the ankle circumference and choose the correct kit
accordingly (ankle size 18-25cm, 25-32cm or >30cm+).
• It is preferable to apply the compression system first thing in the
morning or after the patient’s legs have been elevated for an hour
to minimise any orthostatic oedema.
• Apply K-SOFT in a spiral up the leg with 50% overlap from toe to
knee. If necessary, K-SOFT can be torn and applied over the bony
prominences to offer extra protection.
• Apply K-LITE in a spiral up the leg with minimal stretch and a 50%
overlap. K-Lite is not included in the 25-30cm kit
• Apply K-PLUS in a “figure of eight” up the leg with 50% stretch
and 50% overlap using the central blue line as a guide (not applicable
for the 25-30cm kit).
• Apply KO-FLEX in a spiral up the leg at 50% stretch and 50% overlap.
• Press down gently to ensure full cohesion
• If any component is found to be longer than required when the
knee is reached, remove the extra length. Do not over-wrap the
bandage below the knee as this will increase the donated pressure.
• Bandages may be left in place for up to 7 days.
PRECAUTIONS
• Check that the ABPI > 0.8 using Doppler ultrasound before
prescribing the bandage system.
• In the event of diabetes, heart failure or advanced micro-vascular
disease, the compression system may be used with close medical
monitoring following appropriate treatment.
• If peri-ulcer infectious dermatosis, treat infection before commencing
treatment with the compression system.
• If the ulcer is from rare aetiology (vasculitis, haemopathy, pyoderma
gangrenosum etc.) the compression system should only be used
following specialist referral.
• The UrgoK4/ K-Four kit is designed for single use only.
• Store away from light and heat.
• K-SOFT and K-LITE are not washable.
• K-PLUS and KO-FLEX may be washed up to 5 times at 40°C – air
dry flat.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS
• UrgoK4/K-Four should not be used on patients who have marked
ischaemia or impaired arterial blood supply (ABPI < 0.8). KO-FLEX
contains low levels of natural latex.
