(Israel, sometimes called the Hebrews or Jews) • Who was the 1st king of Israel? (Saul) • Who was the 2nd king of Israel (David) • What nickname is attributed to David? (He was called, “A man after God’s own heart”) • Did Saul & David get along? (At first, but later Saul got jealous of David and tried to kill him. David refused to kill or overthrow Saul.) • What was the name of the giant that David killed? (Goliath) • What was the name of the woman that David had an affair with? (Bathsheba) • How did David try to cover up the fact that he got Bathsheba pregnant? (He tried many things, but in the end he had her husband killed in battle and married her) • What did God promise David when he made a covenant with him? (1 -­‐ A descendant of his would sit on the throne forever; 2 – A descendant would bring a time of peace; 3 – A descendant would build God’s temple; 4 – God would call David’s descendant Son) Lesson 12 – Wise Solomon & the Temple You need to know… • God told Solomon to ask for anything and God would give it to him. What did Solomon ask for? (Wisdom) • What did Solomon build for God? (The Temple) • In which area of the temple did God dwell most fully? (In the Holy of Holies above the Ark of the Covenant. The people said the Ark was God’s footstool) • What items were in the Ark of the Covenant? (10 Commandments Tablets, Aaron’s Staff, Jar of Manna/Bread) • What separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place? What were their names? (The northern kingdom kept the name Israel, and the southern was called Judah) • What was the role of a prophet? (To speak God’s words to the people) • What two things did a prophet’s message usually do? (Criticize and Energize) • Define how the prophets’ message criticized and energized? (Criticized – the prophets pointed out sin among the people of God and told them to repent; Energize – the prophets gave promises in dark times about God’s forgiveness and hope for a new way of life.) • What was the EXILE? (The exile was when big empires took the people of God away from their homeland.) • What did they call the small number of Jews who returned from exile? (The Remnant.) Lesson 14 – A Story Without an Ending: Old to New You need to know… • The Bible is divided into two main sections, what are they called? (The Old Testament and the New Testament) • How does the Old Testament end? (It doesn’t. The Old Testament is a story waiting for an ending. Christians believe Jesus is the point of the whole story.) • In which Testament do you find stories about Jesus? (New Testament) • In which Testament do you find stories about King David? (Old Testament) • In which Testament do you find stories about the apostles? (New Testament) • In which Testament do you find stories about Moses & the People of Israel? (Old Testament) • In what Testament do you find stories about The Church? (New Testament) • What is the main theme that runs throughout the whole Bible? (God loves humanity and wants to rescue us from sin.) Lesson 8 – Joseph: Sold to Egypt You need to know… • How many brothers did Joseph have? (He had 11 brothers. So, counting Joseph, there were 12 boys.) • Where do the 12 tribes of Israel get their names? (They are named after the 12 sons of Jacob. Jacob’s nickname was Israel) • Why were Joseph’s brothers jealous of him? (He was their Father’s favorite child) • How did Joseph end up in Egypt? (He was sold by his brothers as a slave to some people traveling to Egypt) • How was Joseph reunited with his family in Egypt? (There was a famine of food in the land, and so they came to Egypt looking for food. Joseph was in charge of all the food and after some tears, he welcomed them back) Lesson 9 – Moses & the Big Exit You need to know… • Where were the Israelites enslaved? (Egypt) • Who did God call to lead the Israelites out of slavery? (Moses) • Name of the plagues that God brought on Egypt because Pharaoh would not set his slaves free? ((1) Water into Blood, (2), Frogs, (3) Lice, (4) Flies, (5) Diseased Livestock, (6) Boils, (7) Hail, (8) Locusts, (9) Darkness, (10) Death of Firstborn • How did the Israelites escape the Egyptian Soldiers? (God split the water and they crossed through the sea) Lesson 10 – The Law & the Tabernacle You need to know… • After the Israelites left Egypt, how long did they wander in the wilderness? (40 years)
