Ultrasound Imaging Preparation
What is an Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses high frequency sound waves to
produce images of the internal organs, blood vessels and other structures within the
body.
How do I prepare for the test?
The following Ultrasound exams require slight preparation before the exam. You
may not eat or drink after 12:00 pm (midnight) before these exams.
1. Abdominal Ultrasound including; Aorta, Pancreas, Liver, Gallbladder, Celiac Artery,
Renal Arteries, Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) and Elevated Liver Enzymes.
The following Ultrasound exams require slight preparation before the exam. You
should be well hydrated the morning of the exam.
1. Kidney/Renal Ultrasound
The following Ultrasound exams require slight preparation before the exam. You
should drink at least 32 ounces of water one (1) hour before arriving for exam.
1. Pelvic Ultrasound
2. Bladder Ultrasound
Patients who are pregnant should follow these instructions for Ultrasound exams.
If you are in your first trimester you should drink at least 32 ounces of water before
exam. If you are in your second or third trimester you should drink at least 16 ounces
of water before exam.
