These instructions must be thoroughly read and understood before installing and operating
this product. Follow the safety standards for handling acetylene gas as set forth by the
Compressed Gas Association (CGA) Pamphlet G-1 and other safety governing bodies. If
you have any questions or concerns, please call the Technical Services Department at
800-343-4048, 8AM to 5PM Eastern Time. For locations outside North America, please
contact your local representative.
General Description
The Parker Balston 73-100 AA Gas Purifier is a completely engineered, wall-mounted system
designed to purify the gases commonly used in Atomic Absorption (AA) Spectrophotometers. The
Purifier consists of two independent high efficiency filtration systems: two-stage filtration for
compressed air and single-stage filtration for acetylene (see Figure 1). A flashback arrestor has
been integrated into the acetylene filtration line to ensure safe operation of the system.
When installed on the compressed air and acetylene lines, the Parker Balston 73-100 AA Gas
Purifier will protect the AA Spectrophotometer burner assembly from contamination and corrosion,
and it will reduce the potential for explosion.
Compressed Air
Filtration
The two-stage compressed air filtration assembly consists of a Grade DX coalescing filter followed
by a Grade BX coalescing filter (see Figure 3). Together, these filters remove oil, water, and
particulate contamination to 0.01 micron from the inlet air supply. These filters are equipped with
float drains which automatically open to empty any liquids accumulated inside the filter housing.
The inlet and outlet connections for the compressed air filtration line are 1/4" female NPT.
Acetylene Filtration
The acetylene filtration assembly comprises a Grade BQ filter and a flashback arrestor. The filter
removes liquid and solid contaminants from the acetylene to <1ppm. The flashback arrestor
prevents potential back-travel of the AA burner flame to the acetylene tanks, and it is UL approved.
The inlet and outlet connections for the acetylene filter are 9/16"-18 LH (Left Hand Thread, “B”
size).

Installation
Figure 2 - Mounting Dimensions
Location
The Parker Balston 73-100 AA Gas Purifier should be located as close to the AA Spectrophotometer as possible, to minimize pressure drop and recontamination of the air and acetylene. The
ambient temperature should be between 40°F(4°C) and 100°F(38°C).
Mounting
Drill mounting holes into the wall using the enclosed mounting template. (Note: Mount the Gas
Purifier in a horizontal position only.) Insert mounting screws halfway into the wall. Install all
fittings, valves, and tubing while the 73-100 is unmounted. Complete the mounting procedure by
hanging the unit and tightening the screws. All mounting hardware supplied by the customer should
be adequately sized to support the weight of the unit (10 lbs/5 kg) in its mounted position.
Utilities
Install shut-off valves upstream from the 73-100 on both the compressed air supply line and the
acetylene supply line (see Figure 3). This will enable the unit to be isolated from its gas supply for
maintenance and troubleshooting activities.
Compressed Air- If the compressed air is supplied from an elevated air line, a drip leg must be
installed directly upstream from the 73-100. The pressure of the compressed air supply should be
between 15 psig and 125 psig (1 barg to 8.5 barg). If the pressure falls below 15 psig (1 barg), the
automatic float drains in the compressed air filters will not function properly. If the pressure
exceeds 125 psig (8.5 barg), damage to the air filter assemblies may occur. A pressure regulator
(P/N 72-130) should be installed on the compressed air line, upstream from the 73-100, to maintain
a constant pressure air supply to the AA Spectrophotometer. The inlet air temperature should be
78°F(25°C) or less.
!
Acetylene- The maximum working pressure of the acetylene supply is 15 psig (1 barg). The
pressure of the acetylene supply to the Gas Purifier should not exceed 15 psig (1 barg). All
fittings, valves, and hoses utilized for the acetylene piping must be approved for acetylene
service. Use only yellow brass (<65% copper) or stainless steel for all piping components
in contact with acetylene. Piping components with a copper content higher than 65% pose
an explosion hazard when used in conjunction with acetylene.
Drain Lines- The drain lines from the coalescing filters will pass small quantities of water and
compressor oil and should be piped away to a suitable containment device or drain. It is not
necessary to remove the drain plug on the acetylene filter housing during normal operation. Trace
quantities of acetone which coalesce in the housing will evaporate before any significant accumulation takes place.

Maintenance
!
All maintenance activities should be performed by suitable personnel using reasonable care.
Isolate the 73-100 from the inlet compressed air and acetylene supply lines, and de-pressurize all
filter housings before starting any maintenance procedures.
The only maintenance required for the Balston AA Gas Purifier is the annual replacement of the
filter cartridges in the compressed air and acetylene filter housings. The part numbers for the
replacement filter cartridges are listed in the Ordering Information table at the end of this Maintenance section. The three year Filtration Maintenance Kit (P/N 73065) contains three Grade DX
coalescing filters (compressed air), three Grade BX coalescing filters (compressed air), and three
Grade BQ filters (acetylene) conveniently assembled into one package.
Remove the filter cartridges from the compressed air filter assemblies by loosening the collar from
the filter assembly, lowering the filter bowl away from the filter head, and unscrewing the element
retainer from the base of the cartridge. Insert the new filter cartridge and reassemble the housing in
reverse order. Replace the filter cartridge in the acetylene filter housing by unscrewing the filter
bowl from the filter head, exchanging the spent filter for the new filter, and reassembling in reverse
order. The total time required to change all three cartridges is approximately 15 minutes.
