Changing Word Sentences to Number Sentences
Read the word sentence and the number sentence on
the right. When number sentences are written as word
sentences, the order of the numbers can change. Learn to
picture in your mind what the word sentence means.
Word Sentence
The difference
between eight and
two is six.
Five taken away from twelve is seven.
Number Sentence
8–2=6
This word sentence means 12 – 5 = 7.
Sometimes words in the sentence help us decide what the number
sentence should be.
The addends are two and five. The sum is seven.
The words addends and sum make us think about addition.
This number sentence is 2+5=7.
Sometimes you may use a multiplication word sentence.
