Briglin-Mavady As a fifth grader in the Sherburne-Earlville Central school District, Dr. Cynthia BriglinMavady knew that she wanted a career in ophthalmology. Her class did a project studying and dissecting a cow’s eye and she was fascinated. “It was so interesting. The idea of being an ophthalmologist was always in the back of my mind,” said Dr. Briglin. Dr. Briglin did her undergraduate work at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, graduating Magna Cum Laude. From there, she attended SUNY Health Science Center in Syracuse, interned at St. Joseph’s Hospital and did her three year residency at SUNY Health Science Center. Throughout, her high school and college career, she was mentored by Dr. Jeffrey Kramer of Chenango Eye Associates, located in Norwich, New York. With his encouragement, it was an easy decision to return to the region to begin her career. For the past 20 years, Dr. Briglin who specializes Look inside to find a list of everyone who donated to Community Memorial Hospital in 2015. Many thanks to all of you! in the prevention, detection and treatment of most eye problems, has practiced ophthalmology for Chenango Eye Associates in the Norwich and Hamilton offices. Another reason that she chose to come back home was that she has family here — her dad still resides in Earlville. She also appreciates the benefits of living in a rural area. “I enjoy the outdoors — bike riding, kayaking, skiing and snowshoeing. I enjoy using the Colgate University pool and the various fitness facilities in Hamilton,” added Dr. Briglin. In addition, she enjoys the fresh organic vegetables at the Hamilton Farmers’ Market. “Exercise and good nutrition are vital to functioning at our highest capacity. Both are readily available in Hamilton.” Dr. Briglin sees patients in Norwich and in her Hamilton office at 10 Eaton Street. She is in Hamilton one and a half days each week, and does surgical procedures at Community Memorial www.communitymemorial.org cataract surgery. “I find cataract surgery very rewarding because so many patients experience immediate improvement in their ability to see. The surgery has improved over the years and patients function normally much sooner,” said Dr. Briglin. “I’ve had patients who felt up to golfing or cross-country skiing on the same day as their surgeries. However, because of the effects of the anesthesia, we advise against it.” There are challenges in healthcare — declining reimDr. Cynthia Briglin-Mavady bursements, the intrusion of the insurance companies and makone day a month. “Having an ofing sure that the new electronic fice in Hamilton makes it much health records don’t interfere easier for many patients to choose with patient/doctor time. “MediChenango Eye Associates. Chris Graham — A CFO on the Move You might find Chris Graham in his office — or in the Business Office — or in one of the many hospital facilities — or meeting with an employee, a patient, a board member or a vendor. You can be sure that Chris is on the move. Chris Graham came to Community Memorial Hospital in September of 2014 to begin his duties as Chief Financial Officer. He replaced Richard Kirby who had served as CFO for over 40 years. Chris came to CMH from Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, serving as Director of Finance Accounting Operations. As Chris contemplated the next step in his career, he heard about the opening at Community Memorial Hospital. He already knew something about CMH. His mother and brother live in Hamilton and Chris Graham continued on page 2 Chris Graham continued from page 1 his mother, Gladys Graham, had been a patient. He was aware of the quality of service and the positive culture that existed. During the interview process, he also found an institution that was forward thinking – something that was important to him. “Community Memorial Hospital has turned out to be everything that I had hoped for” said Chris. “We face many of the same challenges that all small rural hospitals normally deal with — reimbursement changes coming down the road, staying current with medical technology and recruiting physicians and medical staff.” Chris feels that the hospital has benefitted from several recent accomplishments: successful implementation of electronic medical records and the patient financial system; conversion from a prospective payment system to a critical access hospital; and completing the difficult decision of closing the Skilled Nursing Facility. “All of these decisions have paid off financially and stabilized our base business. In 2015, we were able to generate a positive bottom line for the hospital for the first time in several years,” added Chris. During his hour-long commute each day from Cherry Valley, Chris takes time to contemplate on the future challenges for Community Memorial Hospital: • potential changes in reimbursements — converting a volume based system to a value based system • continued competition from other hospital systems • the inability to access capital dollars to address aging facilities • finding the right mix of medical services as Medicare and other insurance providers place more emphasis on ambulatory care over in-patient care. “Community Memorial Hospital is in a strong position as we look ahead,” said Chris. “We have a wonderful history of quality care and patient satisfaction that we can build on.” “Looking back, it was a great decision for me to join Community Memorial Hospital,” added Chris. “I’ve learned a lot personally from my colleagues and from Dick Kirby. The entire medical staff is dedicated and hard working. Our maintenance and kitchen staffs share the same pride in their work. The work of everyone here is reflected in our quality of care scores — and that translates to great patient care.” 2 • Community Connections Message from the President New opportunities for Community Memorial Hospital 2016 will be an exciting year for Community Memorial Hospital as we strive to be the healthcare provider of choice for the region. We have several projects and milestones in front of our organization this year and all are critical for our future success. Our major milestone this year is going live with our new electronic health record and finance system, Cerner Soarian, along with our partner Crouse Hospital. June 4 is the target day to go live with this system — the culmination of several years’ worth of resources, labor and attention for both organizations. This system has been built from the ground up to meet the clinical and financial needs of both organizations and will provide us with a much better IT platform for the future. Community Memorial Hospital and Crouse Hospital will be on the same IT system, facilitating the flow of patient information and data between hospitals — leading to better outcomes and clinical decision making. The second milestone: in November of 2015, Community Memorial Hospital launched its most aggressive capital campaign to date, focused on a significant capital improvement plan for the hospital and our hospital campus. Community Memorial Hospital is a 63 year old facility, and in need of updating and renovation to improve patient care spaces and to replace aging infrastructure. We have been engaged in the planning process and are considering several options. Now, we are working on securing funding for the project. Significant work still needs to be done to determine the total scope of the project and when we will begin, but we are working hard to advance the project and hope to begin before the end of 2016. These renovations will ensure the viability and sustainability of Community Memorial Hospital for years to come. Last, but not least, another major milestone for Community Memorial Hospital is the advent of our first annual golf fundraiser. On June 13, Community Memorial will host “Chip In for Access to Care” at the beautiful and challenging Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton, with a casual recep- Sean Fadale, FACHE President and CEO tion and awards presentation following at the historic Colgate Inn. A big thank you to Michael Martin, the Chair of this event, and the rest of the golf committee, as this is lining up to be a signature event for Community Memorial Hospital! We invite you to participate, either as a golfer or a sponsor. More information can be found on our website: www.communitymemorial. org or by calling 315-824-7036. As a rural community hospital, we have many challenges in front of us this year, but also many opportunities. Community Memorial Hospital has the advantage of exceptional employees, a high quality medical staff, and a supportive community. All of these factors are important for our success in the future, but the ongoing support of our community is absolutely necessary. Utilization of our services, participating in our fundraising efforts, and supporting high quality, local healthcare will keep our organization and the services we provide sustainable for decades to come. Thank you all and join us as we continue to advance healthcare in our region! Capital Campaign Chair — “Improving Quality and Care” Dr. Robert Delorme has been a mainstay at Community Memorial Hospital for nearly 38 years. He has served the organization in many ways — currently as Vice President for Medical Affairs. In March 2013, Dr. Delorme was named as the first recipient of the David W. Felton Endowed Chair for a Family Practice Physician at Community Memorial Hospital. In November 2015, Dr. Delorme was announced as one of three Capital Campaign Chairs for the hospital’s current campaign — “Improving Quality and Care.” His co-chairs are Jane Pinchin, Thomas A. Bartlett Chair and Professor of English Emerita at Colgate University; and Robert W. Tenney, President and CEO of The Mid-York Press, Inc. in Sherburne. Dr. Delorme was on the strategic planning committee that determined the need for capital reinvestment back into the organization to ensure space efficiencies, positive patient experience, and clinical excellence. In reflecting on the campaign, Dr. Delorme said, “This campaign will be one of the most important in the hospital’s history. Community Memorial Hospital has a great legacy in providing quality clinical care. We will be able to increase access to care for patients in our region and to upgrade patient areas and medical equipment. It will help as we recruit new primary care and specialty physicians. It will be an exciting few years.” For more information about the campaign — “Improving Quality and Care” — contact the Development office at 315-824-7036. Fadale receives national recognition as rural hospital CEO The following article appeared in the February 9, 2016 issue of Becker’s Hospital Review: 50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know – 2016 Written by Shannon Barnet and Kelly Gooch Mayo, Johns Hopkins, Mount Sinai, Barnes-Jewish. These massive hospitals and health systems are practically household names. That said, many Americans live in small, rural communities and rely on lesser-known hospitals for high-quality healthcare. To honor the leaders behind these remote providers, Becker’s Hospital Review has named the following leaders to the 2016 edition of its 50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know List. These 50 presidents and CEOs have demonstrated dedication to providing high-quality, accessible care to their communities. Many of the executives have either received rural healthcare accolades or led their organization to a status worthy of awards and recognition. For this list, “rural” was defined as being located outside a major metropolitan area or healthcare hub. Leaders were selected based on rural healthcare awards received, rural healthcare committee and board involvement, regional and national leadership positions held and organizational performance. Nominations were also considered. Selected from the list of 50 rural hospital CEOs: Sean Fadale, President and CEO of Community Memorial Hospital (Hamilton, NY) Mr. Fadale was made President and CEO of Community Memorial Hospital in 2012. The hospital is located in a town of less than 5,000 people. Before joining Community Memorial, Mr. Fadale held hospital leadership positions at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial in Urbana, IL; and Warren (PA) General Hospital. He earned a bachelor’s in sports medicine from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA, and two master’s degrees — one in physical therapy and one in business administration — from Gannon University, also in Erie. Mr. Fadale is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. The bedrock of pediatric care is prevention. This includes eating a balanced diet, getting enough exercise and rest, and getting necessary vaccinations. Chief among medical advances over the past century has been the development of vaccines. In a matter of decades, many life-threatening diseases became entirely preventable through vaccination efforts. A new such effort in New York State includes public and private schools requiring students entering 7th and 12th grades to be fully vaccinated against meningococcal disease in order to attend school as of September 1, 2016. This is because there is far greater protection from the spread of bacterial meningitis if children are first vaccinated at age 11, rather than 18. As child and parent advocate, I’m happy to discuss questions about this new rule. Following are answers to those I hear most often. Why does my child need this vaccine? The meningococcal vaccine is the best protection from a very serious disease which teens and young adults are at highest risk of getting. Meningococcal disease spreads easily in large groups and dormitory-like settings. An infected person or carrier can spread the disease by coughing or sneezing directly into the face of others, by kissing a person on the mouth, or by sharing drinks. What is Meningococcal Disease? Meningococcal disease is a disease that can strike healthy young people without much warning. It is caused by a bacterium, Neisseria meningitis, which can lead into infection of the blood, called sepsis. When the linings of the brain and spinal cord get inflamed, this is termed meningitis. Even when caught early and treated promptly with IV antibiotics in an intensive care unit, about 10 – 15% of people who get infected die. Another 10 – 20% suffers lifelong disabilities such as hearing loss, loss of arms or legs, or brain damage. How is the vaccine given? The vaccine is administered as a shot. One dose of the meningococcal vaccine is required before 7th grade and the second dose is required before 12th grade. Most students entering 12th grade got their first dose when they were younger and are now due for their second dose, or booster, which is necessary because protection from the vaccine decreases over time. The only teens not needing a second dose before 12th grade are those who got their first dose on or after their 16th birthday. Are the vaccines safe and effective? Meningococcal vaccines are safe and 85 to 100% effective. They may cause mild and infrequent side effects, such as redness and pain at the injection site lasting up to two days. The vaccine does not contain live bacteria. Therefore it cannot cause meningococcal disease. Dr. Fozia Bakshi How can I pay for the vaccine? All private insurance plans regulated by New York State are required to cover the cost of all vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), for patients through age 18. A federal program called Vaccines for Children (VFC) can help pay for your child’s vaccines if the child is 18 or younger and uninsured, underinsured, eligible for Medicaid, an American Indian or an Alaska Native. Fozia Bakshi, MD is a pediatrician who will be transitioning her practice in late Spring 2016 to the CMH Family Health Center in Cazenovia, at 3045 John Trush Jr. Blvd. She currently sees patients at the CMH Family Health Center in Morrisville, and is accepting new patients for both locations. Dr. Bakshi specializes in the care of children from birth through adolescence.
