Arrival: Saturday
The “Grand Hotel Sitea”, one of Torino’s top hotels, welcomes you right in the city center. In the late
afternoon, we will have a guided sightseeing tour that presents Torino’s most beautiful places (meeting
point: hotel reception at 5:30 p.m.). Sightseeing tour and accommodation from Saturday to Sunday
(including breakfast) are already included in the package price.
1st Day Sunday: Turin – Cocconato (20 miles)
On Sunday morning, a tram or taxi takes us to Sassi on the eastern bank of the Po river. We board the rack
railway and after a short steep ascent, reach the basilica of Superga. Here, a terrific view of the city reveals,
and sometimes goes as far as the Western Alps – an adequate setting to start our first bike tour with a
thrilling downhill ride. Across wavy terrain (short climbs can be covered with the help of our service bus), we
approach the abbey of Vezzolano. We cover the last short distance by foot and visit this treasure of Roman
times, hidden in the beautiful scenery of Monferrato. Via a short bus ride, we arrive in Cocconato, where the
Hotel „Cannon d’Oro“ already awaits. Although it is the most simple of our hotels during this tour, it is of a
charming and familiar atmosphere, and features an excellent and well-renown restaurant.
2nd Day Monday: Cocconato – Asti (23 miles)
Encouraged by the fresh morning breeze, our bikes almost float down into the valley, while we enjoy the
splendid view of Monferrato. Our route leads along several fortified villages towards San Secondo, near
Cortazzone, another example of original Roman architecture in Monferrato. In the afternoon, we reach Asti,
which is situated aside one of the historic traffic routes in the valley of Tanaro river. Palaces and medieval
towers, as well as plenty of important art historical buildings, testify to the wealthy trading town. After arrival
in our hotel “Aleramo”, a modern building right in the city center, we explore the town afoot. For dinner, we
meet in a well-renown restaurant of the city.
3rd Day Tuesday: Asti – Pollenzo (19 miles)
In the morning, we leave Asti by bus and climb on one of the western sandstone hillsides of the Tanaro
valley and follow the “Sentiero del Roero”, a panoramic trail along the ridge. Afterwards, we cycle up- and
downhill back into the valley. In Pollenzo, a characteristic village founded by Roman traders, we are
accommodated at the beautifully restored hotel “La Corte Albertina”. Pollenzo owes its present popularity
primarily to the Slow Food Movement and its small but well-renowned University of Gastronomic Science.
Additionally, it hosts the “Banca del Vino”, a large wine bank for fine Italian wines, in its old cellars. During a
guided tour, we receive a personal insight. Dinner will be served in a typical restaurant nearby the hotel.
4th Day Wednesday: Pollenzo – Monforte (21 miles)
Today, we will experience a striking change in scenery. The Langhe, which we believe to be the heart of
Piedmont, is a true eldorado for wine connoisseurs and the land of truffles par excellence, in short, the
embodiment of tasty delights. Additionally, the region offers a gorgeous view of rolling hills crowned by
castles and fortified villages. The bus takes us up to the “Alta Langa”, thus allowing us to enjoy both cycling
and panoramic views without great efforts. We visit Murazzano, a characteristic small town of the high
Langa, and cycle along the ridge to Monforte d’Alba. We either lodge in the “Residence da Felicin”, a
former monastery that has been recently renovated, or in nice and spacious apartments managed by the
same owner. Signor Nino awaits us for dinner in his “Ristorante Il Giardino de Felicin”, which is known for
its regional cuisine, high quality and best tradition. For the tour PA4 we might switch to another equivalent
restaurant. (2 nights)
5th Day Thursday: Monforte
Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Dolcetto! The special sound of these world famous Italian wines
already predicts their excellent taste, which we will try today. Leaving the bikes behind, you are invited to
join your guide on a relaxed walking-tour through forests and vineyards to Barolo. The small village is not
only famous for its fine wine, but also features an impressive castle worth visiting. After lunch, we return to
Monforte d’Alba, where the afternoon is free to spend as you please. If you decide to do a bike tour on your
own, your guide will provide you with bike locks. Today, we enjoy our dinner in a tavern right in the city
center of Monforte.
6th Day Friday: Monforte – Benevello (15 miles)
During our last day, we enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Langhe once again. From the center of Monforte
d’Alba onwards, we cycle along quiet and small roads, always in view of the mighty Serralunga Castle, to
Grinzane Cavour. Here, we visit the residence of Camillo Cavour, one of the most popular protagonists
during the Risorgimento, the Italian unification movement against the Habsburg regime. In the afternoon,
we ride through the Bassa Langa – the lower Langa – and Roero, both offering compelling panoramic
views. In Benevello, we spend our last night at the beautifully located “Relais Villa d’Amelia” that also
features a swimming pool and a spa. The hotel also suits for an extension of your holidays.
7th Day Saturday: Benevello – Torino
After breakfast, a bus transfer takes us back to Torino with a stopover in Alba, the city of truffles. It gives
you the opportunity to buy some souvenirs that will remind you of Piedmont. We reach Torino within a 90
minutes drive and arrive at the airport about 1:30 p.m. If booking your flights individually, please consider
that you will get the earliest flights from 3 p.m.
