Poetry Terms #1 (Test March 31)
1. poem - created by putting words together in an
interesting way to express a feeling, create a mental
picture, tell a story, or make a sound; entertains the
eyes and ears
2. stanza - a paragraph in poetry, surrounded above and
below by skipped lines
3. rhyme - two or more words which match in the same
last sound
4. tone - the feeling the speaker has about the subject
5. symbol - object which carries more meaning than its
dictionary definitions
6. refrain - a few lines repeated almost exactly at certain
intervals
7. irony - the outcome is opposite of what was expected
8. allusion - a reference to something the poet thinks
everyone already knows
9. mood - the feelings of the reader of the poem
10. meter - rhythmical patterns of stressed and unstressed
syllables in poetry
Poetry Terms #2 (Test April 7)
1. metaphor - a figure of speech, where a thing is
described as being something else in order to suggest a
similarity between the two
2. simile - a comparison to two unlike things using “like or
as”
3. personification - giving human characteristics to non
human things, such as animals, inanimate objects, or ideas
4. imagery - language and poetic techniques used to create
mental pictures and cause emotions in the reader
5. alliteration - repeating the consonant sounds at the
beginning of nearby words (ex. Sally sells sea shells by
the sea shore)
6. onomatopoeia - a word whose sound is similar to the
word or action spelled out (ex. buzz, meow)
7. repetition - using the same word, phrase, line, or stanza
two or more times in a poem
8. assonance - repeating the vowel sounds in the stressed
or accented syllables in nearby words (ex. flying kites)
9. hyperbole - an extreme and obvious exaggeration not
meant to be believed
10. idiom - an expression that doesn’t exactly mean what
the words say
