Laughter, the Tie that Binds High school students are funny - seriously funny. If I have learned one thing in my short tenure here at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, it is this fact. High school students are funny. It’s not that they always try to be funny, but they are. Sometimes it’s their demeanor, sometimes their speech, and sometimes their own strange logic, but it invariably strikes me as humorous. This humor is often accentuated by the fact that many times, students don’t even realize how funny they are. For example, high school students claim they want nothing more than to express their individuality as they argue against the dress code or hair policies to which we have all become accustomed. But, as soon as they are done arguing, they run off to the nearest shoe store to pick up the latest version of the Sperry® Top-sider shoe because “everyone has them.” At other times, their humor is strictly intentional and premeditated, as it was during homecoming week this year. On the theme day entitled “America”, senior Fred Oxler came in dressed as the President of the United States with two Secret Service agents (seniors Matt Gilbaugh and Jake Bambick) following close at hand, dark suits, earpieces, sunglasses and stern looks all in abundance. They cleared the hallways for their POTUS the way that I envision Moses did the Red Sea. It made me laugh, especially when Secret Service Agent No. 1 introduced me to his charge by saying, “Mr. President, please meet Mr. President.” These times of humor stick with us. We remember them. They help us remain uniquely connected as a society. As Mark Twain once said, “The human race has one really effective weapon, and that is laughter.” The laughter that abounds in our hallways here at Kapaun Mt. Carmel got me thinking. It seems that many of our most endearing memories of KMC have something to do with laughter; like the time my very good friends, Gary and Tierney, stole a Port-a-Potty to take to a barn for our Sadie Hawkins dance our junior year. Really, they just borrowed it, but the act of taking it out of a locked warehouse from a rental business which was not the rental business we had contacted to rent said Port-a-Potty makes their retrieval a bit more nefarious than borrowing. Sure, there is a longer explanation, but just the thought of it makes me laugh. And, don’t worry, Gary and Tierney, I am sure the statute of limitations for theft of Port-a-Potties has long since expired, but it’s possible that the EPA can still come after you for all that blue chemical you spilled all over the place. I know I am not the only one who remembers stories like this. I am willing to lay odds that virtually all of you Mount Carmel Academy, Chaplain Kapaun Memorial and KMC alumni out there have funny yet appropriate stories that you remember from the halls, courts, fields, stages and classrooms of our wonderful school. So, here is my idea. I would like for you to share those stories. I would like to collect continued on next page 1 KAPAUN MT. Planned Giving Opportunities for the benefit of KMC If you would do us the honor of jotting down a few of your funny stories from your high school years (that are fit to be retold), we will work to compile them. You control the pen and the facts. We will attempt to assure appropriateness. We will probably be relying on your memory for accuracy. And, we will try to protect the innocent. Did you know that you can provide for your financial future and remember Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School at the same time? In fact, there are many ways for you to make a gift to KMC that may result in lower taxes and increased savings for you and your loved ones. With a little planning, you can make a significant gift to the school, as you can to your parish or to the Catholic Diocese of Wichita or one of the many Catholic ministries within the diocese. You can do this using money that would otherwise go to the government. Estate taxes, capital gains taxes, inheritance taxes...all of these can reduce the amount of money you someday leave to your loved ones. Planning Giving is the art of structuring your gifts to have the greatest impact on your heirs and the Church. Because I am sure there is plenty of humor out there that is not at the expense of others, I ask that your stories be as “victimless” as possible. Please help me with this experiment. I would love to read some of the stories that make you laugh when you think about your time here at KMC, MCA or CKM. Email your stories to me at [email protected]. You may also mail them to the school to my attention. The Quest staff and I will work to get them published, so long as they are publishable. I am sure others will laugh when they read them. And, when we all laugh together, we’ll feel that connection that binds us together as Crusaders for life. Assistance is available in planning your gift so that you can realize the full financial benefits of charitable giving both during your lifetime and when you pass your estate on to your loved ones. As you plan your financial future, we encourage you to remember Kapaun Mt. Carmel. May God bestow His bountiful blessings on Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School. Click on Development_Alumni and then Reunions. 50 years—1963 Four Schools The Classes of 1963 from Chaplain Kapaun Memorial, Mount Carmel Academy, Sacred Heart and St Mary’s got together over the weekend of September 27-29 for a fourschool 50-year reunion. Friday evening found the alumni gathered at Hillside Nursery in South Wichita for a casual mixer. Greg McHenry, CKM ’63 was the host of the evening for the alumni of all four schools. Saturday afternoon found the alumni at KMC for a campus guided tour at 3:00 pm, after which the group got together at Rolling Hills Country Club for cocktails, dinner and a sock hop, featuring music from the ‘50s and ‘60s. Thanks to Greg McHenry, Dee Cartwright, CKM ’63 and all those who helped to put the event together. Thanks also to Bill Pinaire, CKM ’63 for providing the photos shown here as well as those on the KMC website. 45 years—CKM Class of 1968 The Chaplain Kapaun Memorial Class of 1968 held their 45-year reunion over the weekend of September 6-7. The reunion committee, led by Tom Dondlinger ’68, included Marshall McHenry ’68, Chris Moore ’68, Dan Legge ’68 and Richard Kroll ‘68. On Friday night the class met for a stag evening at the home of Chris Moore ’68. Saturday activities included a round of golf at the Wichita Country Club in the afternoon, followed by a dinner with spouses at the Flint Hills National Golf Club that evening. The Chaplain Kapaun guys are already looking forward to the big 50th reunion in 2018. 20 years—KMC Class of 1993 The KMC Class of 1993 held their 20-year reunion over the weekend of July 26-27. The reunion was planned under the leader ship of Mary Novascone ’93 Garretson and Megan Shawver ’93 Wright. On Friday night, the class met at the Pumphouse in Old Town for a party that began at 6:00 and lasted into the wee hours. After most of the class slept in on Saturday morning, they headed over to KMC for a campus guided tour. At 5:00, the alumni attended Sunday Mass at St. Thomas Acquinas, celebrated by Fr. Dan Duling, KMC Chaplain, who had just started his duties at KMC several weeks earlier. After Mass, they headed to YaYa’s Euro Bistro for cocktails and a buffet dinner. A slideshow of the class was shown, after which the class opened up its time capsule to take a look at what they had left behind. As far as we know, only the classes of 1993 and 1994 had actual time capsules stored in the KMC basement. The class of 1994 will have the chance to look at theirs next year. Everyone is looking forward to 2018 when they celebrate their 25th class reunion. 10 years—KMC Class of 2003 The Kapaun Mt. Carmel class of 2003 held their 10-year reunion over the weekend of July 19-20. The events were expertly planned by a team led by Megan Potter ’03 Metcalf and Rachel Schmeidler ’03 Farris. On Friday night the class met at the Pumphouse for a reception and drinks, originally scheduled from 7-10. Word has it that this group of party animals closed the place down in the wee hours. The festivities shifted to KMC on Saturday, beginning with a campus tour at 4:30, followed by cocktails and dinner in the KMC commons. The DJ on hand kept the party going into the wee hours again, and a great time was had by all. We want to extend our thanks to those members of the reunion classes who stepped up to make their reunions not only possible, but successful as well. Please join in thanking them, if you have not already done so. 4 spotlight on alumni Mount Carmel Academy 1963 In a new feature that we are introducing this issue, we want to feature photos from previous classes that have graduated from KMC. Many of you no doubt have photos of you and your friends from your graduating class that are not in yearbooks anywhere. We invite you to share those photos with the rest of the KMC community. You may send your photos by email, using either digital or scanned photos (make the resolution as high as possible please), and send them to Julie Valliere at [email protected]. Or if you would prefer, send your photos to Julie in care of the school. All paper photographs will be returned shortly after we receive them from you. For this issue, we will feature the Mount Carmel Academy Class of 1963, who celebrated their 50year reunion last month. Thanks to Vicki Malone ’63 Cheney for the photos featured in this issue. Congratulations, Sarah! chaplain’s column For many different reasons our alumni are such an important part of our community. You help us monetarily, you give us your time, and you are our biggest supporters and fans. I could go on and on about the many things you do for the Kapaun Mt. Carmel Community, but the most important thing I would ask that you can give us is your prayers. Prayer is such an important part of who we are as a Catholic school. We cannot accomplish anything without God’s grace. students, to give the passion of our faith to faculty, and I hope to give you the courage to be the prayer crusaders that we need to make this all happen. But of course it could never happen without allowing God into our hearts and minds and allowing Him to move us first. Allow ourselves to be the instrument in which He needs to deepen the faith of our community and strengthen the Catholicity that already encompasses every part of our school. Being a Catholic school is precisely what sets us apart from every other high school in east Wichita. The fact that we are Catholic first and foremost forms who we are and who we will become in the future. We as a Catholic community have a God given ability to live out our Catholic faith freely that no other high school in east Wichita has, something on which we need to be able to capitalize from the students all the way to you, the alumni. We should all be proud to be Catholic first and foremost in our lives. I am excited about the prospects that lie ahead of us. I am proud of the accomplishments of the past. I am a Crusader that is allowing God to lead us to the fields of victory and I am Catholic in the midst of all of this. Let us pray through the intercession of Fr. Kapaun and our Lady of Mt. Carmel that we, as the Kapaun Mt. Carmel community, always do the will of God for our community. I can only hope that as I begin my tenure here at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, I can deepen the roots of our Catholic faith that are ever so evident in our hallways, athletic programs, extracurricular activities and hopefully in the homes of our students and alumni. I hope as Chaplain to make Mass more readily available in the daily schedule of our community. I hope to put the fire of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of our Fr. Dan Duling Chaplain 7 K A P A U N M T . C A R M E L 2 0 12 – 1 3 A N N U A L R E P O R T Dear Alumni and Friends, I take this opportunity in this issue of Quest to report on the financial performance of Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2013, encompassing the 201213 school year. I note at the outset that the school’s financial performance under the leadership of Mike Burrus has been outstanding. Mike did a terrific job of assuring a balanced budget and of following through with fiscal discipline to avoid deficits and overruns. I hope to emulate his record and can scarcely hope to improve on it. I also feel compelled to thank all who have been involved in the financial health of our school, most notably our wonderful bishops and priests of the Wichita Diocese, who have embraced through Catholic stewardship the notion that Catholic education should be available to all actively practicing Catholics who are dedicated to a stewardship way of life and who desire a quality Catholic education in our parishes and in our high schools. We are indeed blessed to have such leadership, vision, faith and holiness at our disposal. The impact of Catholic stewardship on our families is significant. As much as we do to control the cost of a KMC education, our cost is still approximately $6,100 per student. Thus, without the benefit of Catholic stewardship, our families would be required to pay at least that amount in tuition and fees in order to meet the normal operational demands of our school. That amount would still not allow us to make capital improvements to our campus. Instead, because of our diocesan commitment to Catholic stewardship, our families’ direct costs for educating their students at KMC, where they receive the finest education offered anywhere in our area, is but a fraction of this per student average cost. Our families pay no tuition. They pay modest book, technology and activities fees. They purchase student uniform items. If their student is involved in extracurricular activities, they may be asked to pay for certain expenses of those programs, like dinners for participants, commemorative spirit wear, certain non-reusable uniform pieces and camp fees. But, all these together amount to hundreds of dollars, not the thousands of dollars required for the base education of each student. The vast majority of these costs are covered by the revenue gained from our feeder parishes through the Catholic stewardship program. The breakdown of KMC’s 2012-13 revenue is as follows: • 77% came from our parishes; • 11% came from student book, technology and activity fees; • 6% came from KMC’s development efforts, including the Annual Fund; • 2% came from gate revenues and entry fees associated with athletics and activities; • 2% came from non-Catholic tuition; • 1% came from various other sources. On the expenditure side, during 2012-13 almost half of our expenditures went directly to instructional costs. Our faculty salaries saw a very modest 1.1% increase over the previous year. Operation of the school facilities accounted for about 18% of the expenditures, and this amount includes interest paid on the remaining debt associated with the construction of Phase 3 of our campus improvement master plan. That debt has been reduced to under $1.5 million, and, through the good graces of our constituency, including the readers of this article, we hope to eliminate that debt completely within the next two years. We will surely celebrate that milestone. General and administrative expenses accounted for 10% of our costs, while the funding of benefits for our employees amounted to 13% of total expense. Smaller, but very critical items included athletics and activities at 8%, and communications and development at 3%. Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School is fiscally healthy. We are truly blessed with many gifts and supporters who believe in and support our mission “to educate and form the total person in the image of Jesus Christ.” It is difficult for me to adequately express my appreciation to all our supporters who help, volunteer, contribute with gifts of any size, and who pray for us every day. You are certainly in our prayers. I look forward to a long and rewarding second career here at Kapaun Mt. Carmel. I am honored to serve you. I hope in the near future to be able to more adequately show my appreciation to all of you who support our mission and remain committed to Catholic education. May God bless you all.
