¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?
Alignment:

Objective:
Students will use numbers 1-30 and the months of the year in order to ask others
and state their birthday.
Materials:
Sentence strips and a class set of the U2L1W1 and U2 L1S1 worksheets and the
U2L1 exit slip

Hook Statement/Activity:
After you have set up your chalkboard, greet your students by saying either “Buenos
días” or “Buenas tardes” (depending on the time of the day). For a warm-up activity, review the song “los días de la semana” (see Youtube.com/Magiaescolar) and the
chant “los meses del año” (see Youtube.com/Magiaescolar). Next, ask a student volunteer, “¿Cuál es la fecha de hoy?” Afterwards, lead the entire class in saying the date
in Spanish. Lastly, lead students in reciting numbers 0-30. Get into the habit of leading your classes in warm-up songs and/or activities.
Direct Instruction:
1. Transitioning from the hook activity, have a student volunteer read the objective; ask this in Spanish. Say, “Necesito un voluntario para leer el objetivo.” Raise
your hand as you make this statement and then point to the objective when you
say “objetivo.” After a student volunteer has read the objective, say the objective in
Spanish.
2. Demonstrate the question of the day and an exemplar response in Spanish, include your birthday in your response. Say both the question and answer 2x. During
the second time, be sure to point to the sentence strips on the board so that students can associate your words with their written forms.
3. Engage students in choral repetition. Say to the students “repítan.” Next, point
to the top sentence strip and say, “¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?” Have students repeat the question 3x. Next say, “Mi cumpleaños es el...” Have students repeat the
response 3x. Before having students complete the statement, point out that the day
goes first in Spanish and then the month. Also, explain to students that the word
“primero” is used in place of “uno” when talking about the date or birthdays.
4. Allow students no more than 1 minute to practice saying their birthdays in Spanish on their own.
Informal Assessment
5. Ask several students, “¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?” As they respond, pass out the
U2L1W1 worksheet. Allow students 3-4 minutes to complete the worksheet.
Independent/ Small Group Practice
6. As students complete their writing assignment, pass out the U2L1S1 worksheet.
7. Explain the directions of the speaking activity [U2L1S1] by modeling them in
front of the students. Give students no more than 5 minutes to complete the activity. Before students begin the activity, explain to them the Semáforo Grading System©
Informal Assessment
8. Walk around monitoring students using the Semáforo Grading System©.
9. Regain the group’s attention by saying, “Siéntanse.” Once students are seated, be
sure to recognize the students who received a lot of green dots. Have one of the
students, who received a lot of green dots, ask one of their peers when their birthday is.
Formal Assessment
11. Pass out the U2L1 exit slip and have students complete it.

proceed to ask them, ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños? Write their name in the
first column and then write their birthday in the second column. Afterwards, show them the birthday that you wrote down. Mark an X in one of
the last two columns indicating whether or not you heard them correctly
and wrote down the correct birthday.
