Course Description
The class will be an introduction to poetry.
Included in this will be sections on:
Ancient Poems
Middle Age Poems
Renaissance Poems
Post Modern Poems
Modern Poems
This course is ideal for students ages 10-18.
Students will create their own poem based on the
different styles covered.
Students will be efficient in basic rhythm and
meter associated with poetry. This will include
learning eight forms of poetry, including: Iambic
pentameter, free verse, blank verse, cinquain,
haiku, ode, limerick, and sonnet. They will create a booklet to take home at the end of the sixteen weeks.
Maximum number of students in the course—4.
Grading
Grading Scale will consists of the following 1-4
scale.
 4-above target/expectations
 3-on target/expectations
 2-below target/expectations
 1-off target/expectations
Pre/Post Evaluation
Grades are pass/fail and determined in the following way:
Instructor Input
The Instructor will assign their recommended
grade based on the scale above. 90% of your
over all grade will be based on this recommendation.
For each class we are charged with providing a
mechanism for documenting growth. This procedure will be different for each course depending
on the course and the instructor.
Attendance
You are required to attend at least 80% of the
dates and times your course meets.
The other 10% of your overall grade will be
calculated based on your attendance.
This is different then the overall grade for the semester.
For this course the Instructor will administer a Pre/
Post evaluation for this course.

Appropriate for: ages 10-18
Week 1 Week of Labor Day
Teach general poetry terms, rhythm and meter.
Enjoy a game of “Rhyming Couplet” – Children
write two lines of the same length in “feet” that
rhyme and complete one thought (Ex. “Plastic
snake – very fake”)
Week 12 Thanksgiving week—No class
Week 2 Childr en will lear n about and successfully write their own limerick.
Week 13 Childr en will lear n about the sonnet, and
begin working on them.
Week 3 Childr en will lear n about syllables
and feet in poetry, and write their own free verse
poem to share with the class.
Week 14 Childr en will finish their sonnets.
Week 4 Childr en will again wor k on mor e
free verse poetry.
Week 15 Childr en will choose and wr ite the poem
of their choice.
Week 5 Childr en will lear n about the haiku
poem and write one or more.
Week 16 Childr en will again choose and wr ite the
poem of their choice.
Week 6 Childr en will lear n how to wr ite a
chinquain poem.
Week 17 Chr istmas
Week 7 Childr en will lear n the five r hythms in Week 18 New Year s
poetry, focusing on iambic pentameter, and will
write a poem of their choice from the ones we’ve
studied.
Week 8 Childr en will lear n about and begin to
write an ode.
Week 19 Childr en will put together their booklet of
collected poetry to take home.
Week 9 Childr en will finish their ode.
Week 20 No Class
Week 10 Childr en will lear n blank ver se and
begin working on a poem.
Week 21 No Class
Week 11 Childr en will finish their blank ver se
poems.
