As we near the end of each year, I always like to take stock of the year. I always
find this time to be the most exciting time of the year because every year I end the
year with a heart of gratefulness for all that I have rather than what I have not. And
each time when I count what I have, I am always filled with a heart of contentment
and joy. It is a mentality that I practice every year. The interesting thing about this
exercise is that I realize that there is so much in me that I can afford to give, not just
materially, but mentally and spiritually.
The old adage “it is more blessed to give than to receive” holds great truth
and wisdom. Joy and happiness comes with giving. In the Mary Kay words, this
equates to “casting your bread on the water and it will come back 100 folds to
reward you”... In the Mary Kay World, this is known as the “GO GIVE” spirit... helping
others without expecting a return. Here I want to especially salute our “Go Give”
awardees. They have decided to adopt the “giving” spirit all year round and not just
towards the end of the year. YOU ARE GREAT!!
As we enter the final month of the year, may our hearts be filled with gratefulness,
the joy of giving and the happiness to know that next year will be a better year
because you decide that it will be better.

Growing up, I recall Christmas as the time of year to gather with the family, eat lots of
good food and most importantly, open lots of presents! As I look back, I’m sure I didn’t
fully appreciate what my parents went through to make sure there were lots of presents
to open. As I’ve grown older, the joy of gathering with the family, eating lots of good food
has only multiplied. However, giving lots of presents brings more joy than I could possibly

event to determine what you’ll want to consider saving
every month. And looking forward to Career Conference
in 2009 in the near future, you may want to hold a few
extra skin care classes specifically for this purpose –
setting aside profits from these classes to cover
your expenses. So what happens if your green
account needs are greater than 40 percent,
less expenses? “Isn’t it great to know that
an independent businesswoman you have
control over this?” Connie asks. “You’ll
likely want to evaluate your expenses carefully to make sure you
are spending wisely. You also can

T
he concept of the Go-Give Award was born in the image
of Independent National Sales Director Sue Z. Vickers.
Sue Z., as she was fondly known, started her Mary Kay business
in 1965 and quickly climbed the ladder of success, debuting as an Independent Sales Director within eight months. In January 1974, she debuted
as the Company’s sixth Independent National Sales Director.
Susan Cruz always had the go-give spirit in
her heart; she even called her unit “Go-Give
Achievers”. She says she always wanted
to share and teach what she knew; to
anyone who would ask, and to anyone she
came across. It touches her heart when
she hears other women tell her that she has
been an inspiration to them.
Being a quarterly awardee twice this seminar
year means so much to her. Susan says, “I
am deeply honored. I will be a go-give for life.
And that’s what matters most. This reminded
me of my relationship to God and how it has
made an impact on who I am now. Whatever
I do, I do it for God.”
From the beginning, she was famous among the independent sales force
for her enthusiastic, loving personality. At Seminar 1971, she was honored
for her willingness to inspire and motivate all who came to her for help,
earning her the distinction of being named the original Miss Go-Give.

And what advice does she have for those who would like to aim for a
go-give heart? She simply says, “Everything should come from your heart.
Always practice the Golden Rule and you will have a Go-Give heart.”

help any Beauty Consultant or Sales Director climb the ladder of success.

In 1978, the first annual Go-Give Award was presented at Seminar as a
memorial to Sue Z., whose tragic and untimely death that same year at the
age of 37 left a tremendous void among the independent sales force.
Sue Z. Vickers has been described as the most “go-give person you’d ever
want to meet.” You could stop her anywhere, anytime, and she was not too
busy to answer a question or share an encouraging word. She truly cared
about others. She led with love, calling her unit “my beautiful bouquet of
roses.” She believed every single individual was valuable and deserving of
praise. And she gave it generously and genuinely. That yourself and being
sincerely interested in the total person, you not only bring out the best in
others, you also bring out the best in yourself.
Now that you have an understanding of the qualities that contribute to the
Go-Give spirit, you can see why this award is truly the highest honor a person can receive. Those who participate in the nomination process should
do so thoughtfully and with regard for the heritage behind this award. Annual Go-Give Award winner will receive a coveted diamond Go-Give pin,
