LIFE
Como Friends • ANNUAL REPORT 2014
Dear Como Friends supporters,
New life is always something to celebrate. Whether it’s that bright purple crocus
peaking through the season’s last snowfall, or the awkward first steps of a
newborn zebra, the cycle of rebirth and renewal never fails to reconnect us
with the natural world.
That’s all part of the program at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, which lived
up to its mission—and then some—in 2014. A steady zoo-born baby boom kept
Como Zoo keepers busy all year (and sometimes up all night). Horticulturists at
the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory dug deep into preparations for the landmark’s
100th anniversary in 2015, breaking ground on a fresh new Centennial Garden.
Education specialists welcomed busloads of Minnesota school kids to innovative
and immersive new conservation programs. Even Polar Bear Odyssey doubled its
capacity this year, welcoming two new “toddler” bears Suka and Sakari, who are
already on a first-name basis with nearly 1.8 million visitors.
As a supporter of Como Friends, you can take credit for everything that’s
growing at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory—including community support
that’s increased the capacity of our fundraising organization by 50 percent in
the last five years alone. In fact, Como Friends enjoyed a record-breaking year,
investing more than $1.9 million in priorities at Como—an annual contribution
that rivals our yearly investments during our most recent capital campaign.
Thanks to you, Como Zoo keepers can minimize the stress of expectant zoo
moms with routine ultrasounds and progressive veterinary care. Thanks to
you, Como’s education specialists can help fill the achievement gap with smart,
science-based programs for families who can’t afford enrichment fees.
Thanks to you, one of Minnesota’s most beloved landmarks is going to look
better than ever on her 100th birthday.
Your support for Como Friends is critical to providing the extra care and feeding
Minnesota’s favorite destination needs — not just to survive in the 21st century,
but to thrive.
Thank you for helping us bring new life to Como!

A Powerful
PARTNERSHIP
Fifteen years of Como Friends
In
2014, COMO FRIENDS CELEBRATED ITS 15TH ANNIVERSARY
as the behind-the-scenes fundraising force at Como
Park Zoo and Conservatory. From raising the roof on
the Visitor Center that first united the historic Zoo
and Conservatory, to improving animal care in
progressive new habitats like Polar Bear Odyssey, Como Friends has raised over
$33.5 million in private support to preserve Como while protecting the “open
door” policy that provides free admission to millions of Minnesotans every year.
“That commitment to free admission says so much about this community,”
says Ann Mulholland, Vice President of Grants and Programs at The Saint
Paul Foundation and a former deputy mayor of St. Paul. “At a time when there
are so many disparities and barriers to access, it’s nice to have one place in the
heart of our community that absolutely everyone can experience, and where
everyone can be equal.”
This year, Como Friends raised a record-breaking $1.9 million for Como,
contributing as much in annual support as the organization did during years
it was driving capital campaigns. A new wave of private support for Como
Friends—including a Sunset Affair gala that
saw a nearly 30 percent boost in donations—
TOTAL 2014

strengthens the case for investing in Como’s future.
TO COMO PARK ZOO
“If Como were simply reliant on city funding,
AND CONSERVATORY
incremental things would occur. But if you want
to be creative and do something really bold like
building The Ordway Gardens wing, or Gorilla
Forest, you need the drive to come from the community itself,” Mulholland
says. “Como Friends is bringing together public and philanthropic investment
to transform Como and keep it relevant for another 100 years.
“Como is one of the great jewels of the city, and Como Friends, I do believe,
is the campus’s greatest asset.”

Cultivating
COMMUNITY:
Sowing the seeds for a centennial celebration
at the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory
C
OMO VISIONARIES HOR ACE CLEVELAND AND FREDERICK
Nussbaumer saw eye to eye on the general blueprint of Como
Park, but they didn’t always agree on the garden plans.
Cleveland, the nationally known landscape architect,
believed a natural landscape was all that was needed to
cultivate “physical and moral satisfaction” in a community. Nussbaumer, the
St. Paul Parks Superintendent who was trained at the Royal Gardens at Kew,
preferred the spiritual and practical benefits flowers provided to people in the
“high northern latitudes,” offering reassurance that spring would return, while
providing a showy attraction that could help “pay for the parks.”
Nussbaumer’s faith in the power of flowers has proven itself many times
since the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory first broke ground in 1914. Long
one of the state’s most beloved historic buildings, it’s still evolving to keep
pace with the growing needs of our 21st century visitors thanks to your
contributions to Como Friends.
This year, your support helped to provide for the continuing restoration of
the nationally ranked Charlotte Partridge Ordway Japanese Garden, stunning
seasonal flower shows and inspiring grow-your-own interpretive sessions in the
Chipotle Edible Garden. Private contributions
to Como Friends combined with funding from
the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage
TOTAL GIFT TO THE
MARJORIE MCNEELY
Fund also helped Como’s talented horticultural

team dig into design plans for the Centennial
Garden, a traditional European-style landscape
garden that will showcase the Conservatory’s
100th anniversary.
“The Centennial Garden is another great example of how this private/public
partnership is making the Conservatory better every year,” says Como Friends
Board Member Greg McNeely. “Como really is a statewide resource, and having
that community support behind us helps strengthen the case for public funding.
With the audience we have, the whole state benefits when we invest in Como.”

Growing Families
BUILDING TRUST
N
EARLY 15 YEARS AGO, COMO FRIENDS PROVIDED THE FIRST
funding for a progressive animal training program at Como Zoo
— an investment that saw major returns as keepers managed the
care and feeding of several expectant zoo moms in 2014.
“The training program helps to build trust with animals, and
that was especially important with Markisa,” says primate keeper Megan Elder, who
managed the birth plan for the 28-year-old Sumatran orangutan, mother of 8-year-old
Jaya. When she first arrived at Como Zoo, Markisa was stand-offish and mistrustful
of keepers, but thanks to the consistent and positive reinforcement she receives in
behind-the-scenes training sessions, the now veteran mother cooperated with all of
the check-ups her planned c-section birth required.
“Markisa was a rock star,” Elder says, volunteering for ultrasounds that helped
veterinary partners at the University of Minnesota track her pregnancy from week to
week, allowing them to settle on January 7, 2015 as the best day to deliver a thriving
baby to a healthy mother. Though the sight of a veterinarian was once cause for stress,
Markisa actually presented her belly to U of M
vets so they could see how her incision was healing

after surgery. “I don’t know where we’d be without
COMO ZOO:
the training program,” says Elder. “It’s been so
important to building the trust.”
In 2014, your contributions to Como Friends also
helped to build a new public feeding station for the
giraffes, a fresh new look for the African Hoofstock building, and a splashy design plan
to improve the Seal and Sea Lion habitat. Whether it was paying for the extra bananas
Como Zoo’s two pregnant gorillas put away, or providing the equipment necessary to
save Wyoming toads from extinction, nearly every animal at Como Zoo benefits from
your contributions. “Even the primate keepers got a nice new coffee maker as a baby
shower gift, which really helped during those round-the-clock feedings,” says Elder.
“We feel the support from Como Friends every day.”

CONSERVATION
Connecting classrooms to Como

HEN SCHOOL GROUPS FILL OUT THEIR EVALUATION FORMS
following a conservation program at Como, there’s one
course change many teachers have put in the suggestion
box. “The comment we hear most often from teachers
is that a field trip is just the start of learning,” says Susie Van Blaircom,
Education and Conservation Curator at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory.
“School partners often tell us how much they wish they could take advantage
of everything Como has to offer for more than just a few hours once a year.”
Teachers and students got their wish in 2014, as Como’s education
department launched a pilot program for a new residency program that brings
kids from 25 public, parochial and special needs elementary classrooms to
Como for a week of immersive learning. A colorful Como bus delivers each
class from their school to the Visitor Center every day for a week, allowing
students to dive deep into a cross-disciplinary curriculum led by a Como
education specialist. “All week when my child came home he could not stop
talking about his day at Como,” reported
one satisfied parent. “He never talks about

his regular school day this much.”

PROGRAMS:
Innovative new programs are just the
start of what your support makes possible
at Como Friends, which provides direct
investment in education efforts, while also
advocating for public funds for Como—a living conservation classroom that
serves more than 500,000 students across the state every year. From the new
iPads at the interpretive carts staffed by Nature Walk teens, to fun summer
programs like Project Passport, to the free admission our field trip groups
depend on, your support for Como Friends helps inspire the next generation
to take up the cause of conservation.
