OLOP SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING – Monday, November 7, 2016
IN ATTENDANCE:

Hope Springs: This is our theme for the school year and we want to incorporate into to
our meetings.
Few remarks from the Principal Nicole Falcone-Dempsey; talked about PATHS; teachers
and students using common language in classrooms in addressing conflicts and instilling
hope to everyone using Hope Springs as guide.
Marco Poisson, who represented OLOP school at Canadian Parents for French event
gave a speech. See copy of Marco`s speech.

Professional Development Sessions – coming up on November 26th at Northlands Expo
Centre for School Councils and School fundraising Societies. Cost is $20; anyone is
welcome to attend
Competencies: Webinar for Parents – Alberta's Kindergarten to Grade 12 provincial
curriculum is designed to engage students in exploring, developing and applying
competencies in relevant subject content and contexts. ERLC, in partnership with the
Alberta School Council Association, has created an informative, two part webinar series
to help parents learn about competencies, and how they can support the development
of competencies.

7.PRINCIPAL REPORT: Nicole Falcone-Dempsey: Hope Springs Remarks – common vocabulary

French Immersion surveys went out to parents. This Thought Exchange
was form the district and trustee initiated
District Satisfaction surveys also went out for all parents and grades 4-6
students
Read in Week was a great success. Teachers did a fabulous job planning.
Picture retakes on November 8. All classes will redo their class pictures as
well.
All staff has been trained in PATHS training. This is a new district resource
that teaches will be using for Health.
All staff has also been trained in GO EDUCATOR. This is a mental health
training across the district as well.
Hot Lunch was fabulous. Many thank yous from the MT parents who
received food
SCARE HUNGER was fabulous and 20 families will benefit from the
hampers
Ski day is going to be changed as we have no snow
Remembrance Day celebration is November 9 @ 1pm. All parents
welcome.
Report cards go out December 2 and demos are December 8 from 3:304:30 and then again from 5:30 to 6:30pm
Chrome books and carts have been ordered
2 portables may be added to the school next year. We have added a
camera in the back, a doorbell, loudspeakers and a keyless entry for

students. The district has assured us that we will have proper walkways
for students
Hired 2 new EA’s and will be hiring for a maternity leave in grade 2
English
8. DISCUSSION ITEMS
Christmas Concert – booked; will start 6:30 pm
Professional Development Day for Council and Societies: Event is on November 26, 2016 at
Northlands Expo Centre, presentation of various topics( financial skills, learning how to write
grants)

Webinar for Parents: Topic Competencies – Revising Provincial Curriculum, this is an
opportunity for parents voices being heard
Fundraising: We will continue to receive Boston Pizza receipts; main focus is Casino fundraising
•
Aileen shared that she discussed with St. Martha about West Jet tickets and we will hold
off and try again next year
Hot Lunch: October 28, 2016 hot lunch was "phenomenal"; all parents were supportive;
Teachers were amazing in identifying the list of students who will benefit from hot lunch
•
For next month hot lunch will be EDO
Canadian Parents for French (CPF)

Marco Poisson represented our school to help at the Gala and attended the first
meeting which was on October 25, 2016 at 6:30pm at Café Bicyclette
He shared that the focus was on the power of French Immersion and the people
who had taken French from Kindergarden to University, challenges of Catholic
School system, but there was not a lot of points that were discussed that will benefit
our school

4.Treasurer's report: Not in attendance, we will provide a detailed
Treasurer's report at our January meeting
5. Casino – December 6&7. We still need 15 more volunteers. Parents are encouraged to try
and recruit additional friend and family to participate in this event. Contact Lisa at 780-9072180 for volunteer opportunities.

Volunteers will receive two concert/food tickets
6. School request:
Winter Festival was discussed and this will be held on January 16th and 17th.
School safety and traffic was discussed; Nicole shared that teachers and students were advised
of the road safety issues and that there should be no jaywalking, no U-turns. Issues are
hopefully to be solved because of the newly painted lines on the crosswalks near the school.
Parents are encouraged to talk to other parents about road safety and be mindful of the
choices of words.
Family Dance booking and DJ booking will be discussed in the next meeting.
