BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY MARCH 2016 Education Now THE UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION MINOR NEWSLETTER SENIOR SPOTLIGHT “Like many other Binghamton freshmen, I came into college thinking I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life, only to be quickly put back into my not-so-well-planned, indecisive place. I spent a good half of college just trying to figure out what I wanted to do for my remaining minimum of fortyfive years left in the workforce, but come Fall 2015, it all came together. After being accepted into the Education Minor, **Big Thanks To Mr. Archer**, I began my journey in Education 410X: Issues in Education. It was in this class, that I not only learned a lot about Educational Policy and Reform, but I also learned about myself. I learned that I was able to “stick to my guns” so to speak on issues that mattered to me, and that one of those issues was Education across the lifespan. So, quickly searching for some happy medium to satisfy all my hopes and dreams, I stumbled upon Industrial/Organizational Psychology. As many of you are probably not aware of what this is, or think its some weird spin off of engineering, I will ‘enlighten’ you. Within this field, Psychologists work heavily in business settings, working to help employees make the most of their strengths and weaknesses in order to best benefit the company. So, now I am sure you are thinking “Hey, Megan, why in the world are you in Education Now, if you are not going into Education?” Well, my friends, that is where we no longer see eye to eye. You see, the premise of Education and this field are incredibly intertwined, as much of my dayto-day activities will be meeting with employees oneon-one, as well as in larger groups, teaching them all about the company’s organizational culture, and how they fit into it. Additionally, I will be able to use many of the teaching tactics that I learned within my classes for the minor, such as crafting lesson plans, teaching in collaborative groups, or individually and many more! Thinking about post-grad is scary enough, but actually living in a world outside of “The Binghamton Bubble” is terrifying. However, after going through the education minor, I not only found my dream profession, but I also feel extremely prepared to enter the workplace. So, what does the future have in store for me? I will be working for Northwell Health Hospital System in their Human Resources Department and going to Graduate School for Industrial/Organizational Psychology! Despite my crazy, hectic post-graduate plans, I will be constantly reminded of my fond memories not only in Binghamton, but within my Education classes, on a daily basis, from now until retirement.” -Megan Curran ‘16 PAGE 1 BINGHAMTON UNIVERISTY MARCH 2016 “I have always known what I wanted to do with my life, resulting in many people asking ‘why would you ever want to become a teacher’? I could not (and still can’t) understand why anyone would put down a profession that directly impacts the future of our world. As I look back on my past few years here at Binghamton University, I am incredibly thankful for the education minor and all of the opportunities that it has provided me. I transferred from a college where I was already an early childhood education major, so coming to a school without one was an enormous adjustment for me. As soon as I heard about the education minor, I knew that I would do whatever it took to be a part of it in order to grow as an aspiring teacher. Education 406 and 410 were without a doubt the most inspiring courses I have taken throughout my entire college career. While taking these classes, I became a member of the steering committee to help build what has now become the biggest minor on campus. I loved being surrounded every week by people who cared about education and making a difference just as much as I did. Although I am sad that this part of my journey is coming to an end, I am exceptionally excited for the future and hopefully having a classroom to call my own. In the fall I will be attending St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, NY to earn my masters degree in Childhood and Special Education for grades 1-6. The education minor has thoroughly prepared me for this next phase of my life and for that I will be forever grateful.” -Nicole Healey ‘16 Alexandra Gerin and Clare Gilroy are both returning to Binghamton University in the fall to pursue their MAT in biology at the Graduate School of Education. They have been a part of the minor for the past 2 years, so they are excited to explore more education classes and methods. For the past 2 years they have been Resident Assistant’s in Hinman College, but they are excited to take on new challenges in Graduate school.
