Newark Board of Education Employees Credit Union
Awards Four Scholarships
To
2012 Graduates
Mrs. Helena D. Lowther, Chair presided over
the NBEECU Scholarship Awards Dinner.
At a gala event at Mayfair Farms in West Orange, New Jersey, Newark Board of Education
Employees Credit Union honored four of the brightest students from the class of 2012.
Scholarship awards were given to four highest scoring applicants that applied. The applicants
were required to be children of Newark Board of Education Employees Credit Union members.
The awards were presented based on a student’s academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities,
and factored in an applicant's extracurricular activities and community service record. All of
our recipients understand the value of being a credit union member and its financial impact on the family.
Brianna Bradley grew up in Maplewood and graduated from Columbia High School. Here she was a peer counselor at the high
school. Brianna was able to manage her time between academics, various community service projects as well as taking Jazz and
ballet dance classes. She was also active in sports. Brianna plans to attend Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia where she
will major in Elementary Education. She plans to utilize her education in an urban school district.
Donneisha Harper graduated from Franklin High School in Somerset, NJ. It was at Franklin High School where she displayed leadership skills to help other students shy away from the dangers of smoking. Donneisha has also shown special talents in dancing,
singing and softball. Donneisha plans to attend Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland where she will major in nursing.
Jarid Thomas will be enrolling in Saint John’s University to study International Business , Global Studies with a minor in Sports Management. Jarid believes he will help “transform the world.” Jarid intends to “set an example for male youth, particularly African
Americans and minorities. “ Jarid is a recent graduate of St. Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, NJ. He resides in Hillside, NJ with his family.
Darius O. Thurman graduated from Science Park High School here in Newark. He has been active in the many community activities
necessary for one to give back to their community. Darius will attend Seton Hall University in the fall where he will major in Business Administration. Once he graduates from Seton Hall University, Darius plans to return to Newark to give back to his community. He has many interests other than academics. He has always enjoyed golf, bowling, chess, football and basketball.
2012 witnessed a group of students that not only excelled academically, but have a mature perspective in giving back to their communities. We know that all will do well in whatever careers they choose and the community will do better as they match their
skills to the needs of the neighborhood. Good luck graduates.
Brianna Bradley is all smiles as she
heads off to Hampton University.
Elementary Education is her major.
Donneisha Harper is prepared for
the challenges of college life at
Morgan State University.
St John’s University will never be
the same as Jarid Thomas sets out
to change the world.
Seton Hall University is the school
of choice for Darius Thurman. He
plans to use his skills in Newark.
