The Emperor Hadrian (117-138) gave orders to cover over the ground of Golgotha and the holy Sepulchre of the Lord, and to build a temple of the pagan goddess Aphrodite and a statue of Zeus. Pagans gathered at this place and offered sacrifice to idols there. Eventually after 300 years, by Divine Providence, the great Christian sacred remains, the Sepulchre of the Lord and the Life-Creating Cross were again discovered and opened for veneration. This took place under the In 313 he had issued the Edict of Milan, by which the Christian religion was legalized and the persecutions against Christians in the Western half of the empire were stopped. The ruler Licinius, although he had signed the Edict of Milan to oblige Constantine, still fanatically continued the persecutions against Christians. Only after his conclusive defeat did the 313 Edict of toleration extend also to the Eastern part of the empire. The Holy Equal of the Apostles Emperor Constantine, having gained victory over his enemies in three wars with God’s assistance, had seen in the heavens the Sign of the Cross, and written beneath: “By this you shall conquer.” Ardently desiring to find the Cross on which our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified, St Constantine sent his mother, the pious Empress Helen (May 21), to Jerusalem, providing her with a letter to St Macarius, Patriarch of Jerusalem. Although the holy empress Helen was already in her declining years, she set about completing the task with enthusiasm. The empress gave orders to destroy the pagan temple and the statues in JeruContinued on Page 2 THE VOICE September 2014 salem. Searching for the Life-Creating Cross, she made inquiry of Christians and Jews, but for a long time her search remained unsuccessful. Finally, they directed her to a certain elderly Hebrew by the name of Jude who stated that the Cross was buried where the temple of Venus stood. They demolished the pagan temple and, after praying, they began to excavate the ground. Soon the Tomb of the Lord was uncovered. Not far from it were three crosses, a board with the inscription ordered by Pilate, and four nails which had pierced the Lord’s Body. In order to discern on which of the three crosses the Savior was crucified, Patriarch Macarius alternately touched the crosses to a corpse. When the Cross of the Lord touched the dead one, he came to life. Having beheld the raising of the dead man, everyone was convinced that the Life-Creating Cross was found. Christians came in a huge throng to venerate the Holy Cross, beseeching St Macarius to elevate the Cross, so that even those far off might reverently contemplate it. Then the Patriarch and other spiritual leaders raised up the Holy Cross, and the people, saying “Lord have mercy,” reverently prostrated before the Venerable Wood. This solemn event occurred in the year 326. During the discovery of the Life-Creating Cross another miracle took place: a grievously sick woman, beneath the shadow of the Holy Cross, was healed instantly. The elder Jude and other Jews there believed in Christ and accepted Holy Baptism. Jude received the name Cyriacus and afterwards was consecrated Bishop of Jerusalem. During the reign of Julian the Apostate (361-363) he accepted a martyr’s death for Christ (see October 28). The holy empress Helen journeyed to the holy places connected with the earthly life of the Savior, building more than 80 churches, at Bethlehem the birthplace of Christ, and on the Mount of Olives where the Lord ascended to Heaven, and at Gethsemane where the Savior prayed before His sufferings and where the Mother of God was buried after her death. St Helen took part of the Life-Creating Wood and nails with her to Constantinople. The holy emperor Constantine gave orders to build at Jerusalem a majestic and spacious church in honor of the Resurrection of Christ, also including under its roof the Life-Giving Tomb of the Lord and Golgotha. The temple was constructed in about ten years. St Helen did not survive until the dedication of the temple. She died in the year 327. The church was consecrated on September 13, 335. On the following day, September 14, the festal celebration of the Exaltation of the Venerable and Life-Creating Cross was established. Another event connected to the Cross of the Lord is remembered also on this day: its return to Jerusalem from Persia after fourteen years of captivity. During the reign of the Byzantine emperor Phocas (602-610) the Persian emperor Khozroes II in a war against the Greeks defeated the Greek army, plundered Jerusalem and captured both the LifeCreating Cross of the Lord and the Holy Patriarch Zachariah (609-633). The Cross remained in Persia for fourteen years and only under the emperor Heraclius (610-641), who with the help of God defeated Khozroes and concluded peace with his successor and son Syroes, was the Cross of the Lord returned to the Christians. With great solemnity the Life-creating Cross was transferred to Jerusalem. Emperor Heraclius in imperial crown and royal purple carried the Cross of Christ into the temple of the Resurrection. With the emperor went Patriarch Zacharius. At the gates by which they ascended Golgotha, the emperor suddenly stopped and was not able to proceed farther. The holy Patriarch explained to the emperor that an angel of the Lord was blocking his way. The emperor was told to remove his royal trappings and to walk barefoot; since He Who bore the Cross for the salvation of the world from sin had made His way to Golgotha in all humility. Then Heraclius donned plain garb, and without further hindrance, carried the Cross of Christ into the church. In a sermon on the Exaltation of the Cross, St Andrew of Crete (July 4) says: “The Cross is exalted, and everything true gathers together, the Cross is exalted, and the city makes solemn, and the people celebrate the feast”. 2 | Page THE VOICE September 2014 Transitions BAPTISMS The New Christian: Colton George Parents: Arthur and Anna Marie (Herrmann) Vollhardt Sponsor: Kristen Simmer Date: July 19, 2014 The New Christian: Georgia Parents: Jack Krystalis and Morgan Bales Sponsors: Panagiotis Isihos and Katerina Krystalis Date: August 2, 2014 The New Christian: Ava Katerina Parents: Angelo and Megan (Chambers) Poneris Sponsor: Georgia Krystalis Date: August 2, 2014 The New Christian: Maria Dianne Parents: Angelo and Megan (Chambers) Poneris Sponsor: Konstantina Isihos Date: August 2, 2014 FUNERALS Mary V. Since the beginning of 2014 we have added more than thirty families to our outreach list. On a very positive note, several families have needed us less than in previous years. The Food Pantry has now become a permanent part of the Outreach Ministries of this Parish. Several weeks ago Fr. Bill asked the congregation for volunteers to chair this ministry. A core ministry team has stepped forward to help run the food pantry: Stephanie Diaz, Maria Freeman, Mary Morgan and Matina Trivett. We thank these ladies for offering their time and talent. Our Sunday Church School will continue its program of weekly donations to support the pantry. However, we encourage all parishioners to consider bringing in a weekly donation. We are averaging more that 100 bags of groceries distributed each month, and need a steady supply of food. Last year we discussed serving a Thanksgiving meal to the families of our Food Pantry. If we want to take on this outreach project, we need to begin to organize and tap resources today. If you can assist in any way, please contact the Church office at 513-591-0030. “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” Matthew 25:35 Roof Repair Fund Although we have now paid off our line of credit with Panegyri proceeds, we still need additional donations to fund the last quarter of our year. As mentioned in last month’s Voice, the Parish Council will resume passing a second tray to benefit the roof repair expense. We will need $65,000 in the Roof Repair Fund to offset the Panegyri proceeds used to pay off the line of credit. We need to raise about $25,000 this month to avoid borrowing from our line of credit again. If we would sell out the Car Raffle, it will help somewhat to ease our financial burden. If you have not already purchased or sold a ticket, please consider doing so. The Parish Council continues to ask each Parish household to consider a donation of $250 towards the Roof Repair Fund. We appreciate your concern and your support. 3 | Page THE VOICE September 2014 CHURCH ORGANIZATIONS Melanie McNulty. Our Church School has classes for students aged 3 years to high school senior. SCS classes teach a variety of subjects including Orthodox feast days, the life of Jesus, what we see and do in church, the saints and apostles, the Sacraments, and the Divine Liturgy. We also have a class for adults called, "Living the Orthodox Life". The intent of this class is to refresh understanding of Orthodox essentials and explore the Orthodox faith with respect to life. 4 | Page THE VOICE Each Sunday begins with worship by participating in the Divine Liturgy, followed by religious education. The Divine Liturgy begins at 9:30 am. Families are encouraged to sit in the first eight pews on the left side of the Nave which are reserved for Sunday Church School. Classes begin directly following the distribution of Holy Communion. Classes end at 11:45 am. One of the best ways for a child to build a foundation as an Orthodox Christian is to attend Divine Liturgy and Church School on a regular basis. SCS uses an all electronic registration system. Because of the medical authorization form ALL STUDENTS must be registered electronically every year. A link to the registration form is available on the Church website. We will kick off the SCS year with a huge push to increase our Good Shepherd Food Pantry Ministry. Thanks to Stef Diaz, Maria Freeman, Mary Morgan and Matina Trivett who have September 2014 offered to co-chair the Food Pantry. This ministry has grown since its inception; their leadership will promote further growth. Last year SCS collected close to 3000 items. Let’s all work together to get the total to 5000 this year! Sunday Church School needs a Nativity Program Director and also additional teachers/class assistants. Volunteering for SCS is a wonderful chance to serve your Parish. If you have any questions or would like to offer your time and talents, contact Cara Chryssovergis at 513-226-2746 or [email protected]. SCS has a Facebook group. If you would like to be a member, friend me (Cara Ellis Chryssovergis) on Facebook and I will invite you to the group. It is another avenue of prompt communication for SCS. Our SCS program is offered free of charge thanks to your generous Stewardship donations. Parish Council President's Message by Andy Stefanopoulos The Ecclesiastical year beginning in September is significant for our Parish in many ways. Stewardship, budget planning for the coming year, and the launch of the new Sunday Church School year are all in progress. The Ladies Philoptochos Club, AHEPA, Daughters of Penelope, Mothers Club and Over Fifty club all begin their annual activities. Our Annual Cadillac Raffle event traditionally occurs in September and has become a community tradition. In 1953, we launched the raffle with a simple single $25 ticket, and the only prize, the first ticket drawn, won a 1953 Cadillac coupe. There was no dinner, party, or other prizes. However, we did make a profit, and over the years we added more to the event, including Montgomery Inn dinner for two and additional prizes in a reverse raffle format. With these enhancements we have increased the difficulty of running the event, and created a need for additional volunteers. The profits from this event now account for about four percent of our annual operational budget. The need for a successful event is critical to our financial health. We kicked off ticket sales during the Panegyri, and this year we were fortunate to have a great start by selling 237 tickets there. However, after the Panegyri, we must depend on our Parishioners to sell the remaining tickets to make this event profitable. Traditionally about 40% of the tickets sold are to parishioners and 60% to others. Just to break even, we need to sell about 450 tickets. If you have already purchased your tickets, we sincerely appreciate your support. If not and if every parishioner could purchase or sell just one ticket, we would meet our goals and be very profitable. We appreciate all the support from the Parish Council members, GOYA, and other groups and individuals who contribute their time and talent to this entertaining evening! Please contact me or any Parish Council Member with any questions or to volunteer to help out. 2013 Winner Peter G. It may be that perceptible change in the air as summer slips away, taking the lazy days we enjoyed with it. We almost certainly notice that students and teachers are back at school, if not at home then in daily traffic patterns at least. Whether or not personally caught up in it, we can’t help but perceive that the world around us is busy once again. The Church, by proclaiming the Indiction, i.e., the liturgical New Year, each September 1st, at first seems to be joining the fray. However, as “indiction” comes from the Latin word indictio, which means “definition” or “order,” it becomes clear that the Church seeks to pull us away from the commotion, if not chaos, of daily life. We feel this pull in the most basic sense through the Divine Liturgy, in which we are called to “set aside all cares of life”. Yet the association of the Indiction with the harvest season is a call for Orthodox Christians to work, not only to gather the fruit of God’s blessings, but also to sow more seed. Taking this agricultural analogy further, the more we labor in this vineyard, the more we become like God. God may ultimately own our Church, but we become co-owners as we assume more responsibility for its upkeep. The word for this call to responsibility is stewardship, just as upkeep means ministry. It is timely that our fall Parish stewardship campaign begins in a month of renewed order and seed-planting. Stewardship is often discussed in the context of individual responses to individual blessings, but this is a time to focus on our collective ministries, i.e., the seeds we plant as a community through time, talent and treasure. All three are needed, which is why the campaign materials outline several ways to become more involved in Parish ministries. It is, after all, the extent of participation that makes our stewardship effective rather than the form that individual contributions take. Thus the Stewardship committee asks you to consider prayerfully the many ways in which you can begin, increase or expand your active role in the ministries of our Parish. 2014 STEWARDSHIP LIST THROUGH 8-20-14 Let’s make this year our most successful year ever!
