about us...
seven architecture was established by Martin Wood, Ian Chapman
and Simon Parker in 2006 and has since built a reputation for well
considered design work, within both public and private sectors.
Since inception, the 4 design studios in Manchester, Harrogate,
London and Caernarfon have steadily expanded to take on a number of
exceptionally talented individuals, all committed to developing seven’s
range of skills and offering our clients a fully committed and
professional service.
In recent years the growth of zero-e and seven renew has increased our
range of services to include specialist guidance on environmental issues,
sustainability and the restoration of Listed and Historic Buildings.
We do not seek to impose ideas and concepts but work in collaboration
with others to create genuinely bespoke and appropriate solutions.
Scale, type or location does not dictate a project’s importance to us, we
actively seek commissions which offer us an intellectual challenge and
clients who are passionate about making a difference to
their environment.

Divisional Police Headquarters
Rochdale
Client : Greater Manchester Police
Value : £12.6m
seven were appointed in June 2008, via the Greater Manchester Police
framework, for the 7,000m2 redevelopment of this 1960’s six-storey concreteframed building. Site and wider urban analysis established that this important
public building was lacking connectivity with the adjacent civic area, due to
poor condition, lighting, planting and inaccessibility.
The building was stripped back to its frame and underwent a complete
transformation. The seven team made the most of relatively shallow plan
depths by making spaces open-plan wherever possible, and overcame
constrained heights by introducing fully integrated feature ceilings, which
define circulation routes and allow maximum heights elsewhere.
“Walking into Rochdale Divisional Headquarters is like
walking into a completely new building. Officers and
staff now have the high-quality working conditions
they deserve, providing them with the tools to deliver
a continuously improving, efficient and effective police
service to the people of Rochdale.”

Client : LaROCK
Value : Undisclosed
seven were appointed by LaROCK Construction to enhance an earlier
planning-approved scheme for this prominent one-off residential development
on the main arterial route into Harrogate.
The house has a distinctly contemporary appearance with the exterior
dominated by a glass and white render facade, complemented by panels
of horizontal timber cladding. Internal features include a walnut stair rising
through a dramatic triple-height entrance atrium, an open-plan flexible living
space, and a double-height dining area.
A sustainable approach formed a key part of the clients brief and the scheme
incorporates photovoltaic panels, hot water tanks heated by domestic solar
thermal panels, under floor heating serviced by double air source heat pumps,
and extensive rainwater harvesting systems.
The development won the Pro Yorkshire RICS 2011
Award for ‘Best Residential’, with the judges commenting
“The design and construction of a 21st century house
on a modest suburban site in Harrogate is a daunting
task not for the feint hearted, but with this development
LaROCK impressed the judges with how it rose to and
met the challenge, and in doing so LaROCK set the
benchmark as to what can and should be achieved –
and not just in Yorkshire, but elsewhere in Britain”.

SHORTLISTED
PROJECT
Client : Rushbond Group Plc
Value : £2.5M
The Algernon Firth Building was completed in 1932 to the design of the
architect John C. Proctor FRIBA. It is Grade II Listed and is one of the more
impressive 1930’s buildings Leeds has to offer. The five storey building was
originally built to house medical research laboratories. Of special interest is an
unusual triple height museum space at the upper level, which is constructed
in a tiered ziggurat form.
The building has been converted into 111 student residences which were
completed in September 2013. Other than cleaning and general repair,
minimal alterations to the external facade were carried out. Where changes
have been necessary due to the poor condition of the existing fabric, these
have been undertaken sympathetically. The triple height top floor contains
individual Studio Flats with study areas on elevated mezzanine decks, which
maintain the overall volume of the original museum space.

York Minster Gardens
Client : GEM Construction
Value : Undisclosed
In 2012 seven renew were appointed to develop proposals for a unique
dwelling located within a walled garden, which was formerly the stone
masonry to York Minster. The proposals have been carefully designed to
maintain all of the existing historical features, utilising the basement area to
provide sleeping accommodation, and the15th century cellar for a bathroom
and dressing room.
To the first floor, a light-weight, oak framed single storey extension forms a
large open plan living space. Vertical oak blades are utilised to frame views
and to afford privacy. The roof form of the new extension links with two
existing outbuildings and allows direct views from the living space towards
York Minster.

Harrogate
Client : Harrogate Restoration
Value : £3M
seven renew were appointed in 2013 by Harrogate Restoration to develop
proposals for the regeneration of the Grade II Listed former Harrogate Police
Station to residential use. Located within close proximity to Harrogate town
centre, the proposed development will reinstate the former Police Houses to
residential use along with converting the former Police Station to a variety of
1 and 2 bedroom apartments.
Four new build contemporary dwellings will also be constructed to the rear
of the site and the historical setting of the site will be enhanced through high
quality landscaping.
seven have provided both heritage and architectural services throughout
the design process ensuring a considered and careful approach to the
conservation and re-use of this important civic building in Harrogate.
Naiomi Kempton, Conservation Officer for the project
stated that seven renews heritage record of the
project...“aids understanding of the building and

Bretton Hall
Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Client : Rushbond Group Plc
Value : Undisclosed
Bretton Hall is a Grade II* Listed Mansion House located within the historic
parkland setting of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. The original mansion was
built in 1720 and has been subject to a series of additions and alterations by
a number of notable architects including John Carr and Jeffrey Wyatt.
seven were instructed in May 2013 to develop the Phase 1 works involving
the refurbishment of the existing Georgian Mansion to create a high quality
hotel with 40 bedrooms, along with the conversion of a number of later 20th
Century structures to form office accommodation.
The key to the success of the restoration project has been the sensitive
approach which has been taken to the building arrangement, minimising the
impact upon the historic fabric, whilst harnessing the unique opportunities
provided by the special character of the Mansion House.
“I have been impressed by your thoroughness and
professionalism and I wish you every success with the
Bretton project.”

Tourist Information Centre
Betws-y-Coed
Client : Conwy County Borough Council
Value : £750,000
seven won a design competition to create a new tourist and community
facility in the heart of Snowdonia’s National Park.
Located in Betws-y-Coed, Snowdonia’s busiest tourist destination, the new
facilities integrate a number of functional requirements, including a tourist
orientation point, a mountain rescue base, a police post, and secure storage
space. Our design approach was based on a thorough understanding of the
sensitive context within which the building sits. We balanced our desire to
create a landmark building with a sensitive and considered design approach,
to arrive at a striking and sustainable building within this stunning setting.
The open competition organised by Conwy County Borough Council,
attracted entrants from throughout the UK, who were required to submit
their ideas for a sustainable, BREEAM ‘excellent’ rated facility.

Wirral Youth Zone
Client : OnSide
Value : £4.5M
seven have developed proposals for a number of Youth Zone facilities for
the youth charity Onside, including development of their standard concept
layouts. All schemes provide accessible sports, art, media, dance and skate
park facilities at the centre of the local community.
The Youth Zone model aims to provide opportunities and challenges that
inspire young people to lead healthier and more positive lives, raising their
aspirations so they grow up to become happy, caring and more responsive
citizens. Having opportunities to try new things and face challenges in a
safe environment, supported by staff and volunteers who care, gives young
people the chance to build career skills, life skills and confidence.
Seven are currently working to expand the facilities of the established Wigan
Youth Zone and have prepared designs for the Hive, the new Wirral Youth
Zone. Other work includes designs for the Wolverhampton Youth Zone and
a submission for the Preston Youth Zone RIBA Competition, located within
the curtilage of the Grade II Listed Preston Bus Station.

Fordhall Farm Community Initiative
Shropshire
Client : Fordhall Community Land Trust
Value : £360,000
seven renew were appointed by Fordhall Community Land Initiative in 2009
to prepare proposals for their semi-derelict dairy building at Fordhall Farm
in Shropshire. When faced with losing the family farm to a neighbouring
developer, to save the farm, a co-operative was formed inviting members
of the public to buy £50 shares in the farm. They raised enough money to
purchase the farm from the landlord and FCLI was born. FCLI today has over
8000 shareholders from across the globe.
Working closely with Shropshire Council, the Seven Renew team secured
Detailed Planning and Conservation Area Approval during the summer of
2010. In October 2010, construction work started on site to completely
renovate and extend the old dairy. Completed in 2011 the development
provides new offices, a classroom and tea room for FCLI and a new butchery
and farm shop.

Redcar Beacon and seafront redevelopment
Redcar
Client : Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council
Value : £3M
In collaboration with landscape architects Smeeden Foreman, seven won an
RIBA international competition to design the ‘Seafront Zone’ in Redcar.
The proposals were highly praised for their creativity, intelligence and energy.
In particular, the scheme was selected for its ability to provide a distinctive
offer in comparison with other UK seaside towns and act as a catalyst for the
further regeneration of Redcar.
A key element of the design is the construction of an observation tower
or beacon, which affords far reaching views along the coast. As well as
creating a strong visual landmark, Redcar Beacon also provides space for
craft workshops, a cafe and supporting facilities.

Colwyn Bay Watersports Hotspot
Plas-y-Brenin Mountain Bike Facility
seven have been shortlisted on a number of sports and leisure design
competitions in Wales. Proposals for a new Watersports Hotspot in Colwyn
Bay provided a new focal point for the coastline, visually reconnecting the
town with its seafront with a building that could be seen from the town, the
railway and the road network.
Proposals for a new National Sailing Academy provide multi-use facilities for
conferencing, training and international sailing events based around a world
class sailing academy. The design was a contemporary interpretation of a
traditional chandlery, using large spans to provide flexible internal spaces,
bold ventilation cowls for natural ventilation and local materials to reflect the
character of Pwllheli and the historic boatyard architecture of the coastline.

seven were appointed in 2013 for the redvelopment of the former 1950’s
Cooperative Supermarket. The development which is currently on site involves
the demolition of the existing building to make way for a contemporary
stone and copper clad four-storey Arts building. The development will be
the largest building to be constructed in the centre of Harrogate since the
Victoria Shopping Centre was completed in the mid nineties.
Located on a corner plot in a contextually sensitive urban setting, a well
mannered and carefully considered response has been made. The scale of
the development has been designed to respond to the surrounding streets
which each have a distinct character. Whilst the treatment of the ground floor
colonnade and the roof to the auditoria remain consistent, that of the first
and second floor openings varies according to the scale and rhythm of each
of the three street frontages which surround the building.

Rugby Club
Harrogate
Client : Harrogate Rugby Union Football Club
Value : Undisclosed
Harrogate Rugby Club’s relocation site is located within green belt land, and
a sensitive design approach sympathetic to the rural setting has been taken
to successfully integrate the new facility within its landscape surroundings.
The Clubhouse, access road and associated parking areas are located
where maximum advantage may be gained from natural screening afforded
by woodland and mature hedgerows.
The proposed two-storey clubhouse is designed in stone with glass and timber
cladding. It is rectangular in shape, with shallow pitched roofs in keeping with
agricultural buildings in the vicinity. The Clubhouse takes advantage of the
existing fall across the site to conceal the changing rooms, which have been
designed to accord with RFU standards. Club social areas and a spectator
viewing terrace are elevated unobtrusively above the pitch level.

Surf Snowdonia
Dolgarrog
Client : Conwy Adventures Leisure
Value : £15M
Surf Snowdonia is a 300m x 175m man-made surfing lake on a former
aluminium works on the edge of Snowdonia National Park in North Wales. The

a 2m high wave once every minute. The technology that creates this wave
has been developed as a prototype in northern Spain by Wave Garden® and
the new facility in Dolgarrog will be the World’s first commercial application
of the technology.
seven were appointed in 2013 by Conwy Adventure Leisure to work alongside
their master-planning team to design each of the buildings at this new leisure
destination. In addition to the surfing lake, the new facilities will include an
activity lagoon, a media compound for international competitions, a campsite
and associated amenity building, two Surf Shacks, a Family Activity Building

Client : Skipton Properties
Value : £6M
Located in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park the proposed
development seeks to create a sustainable rural business community for the
area of Langcliffe and Settle.
The design retains the historic features and reinterprets them in a series
of modern structures, with sustainability at the core of the design process
throughout. The former mill race is to be re-opened and a new wheel installed in
the original location, as a direct reference to the site’s history and to generate
power for the new development which includes live/work units, flexible office
space and a 46 bedroom hotel.
At the time of submission the development was the largest scheme to gain
planning approval in the North Yorkshire National Park.

The Phase 1 development provides 3,000m2 of high quality office and meeting
space over 3 floors. It offers a range of SME suites and support space on the
lower floors and is also the home for St Helens Chamber of Commerce.
The proposals remediate a former Brownfield mining site and deliver an
environmentally responsive, naturally ventilated office space, incorporating
solar shading techniques and the use of ground source heat pumps to
achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.
“Since moving in to our new building, one of the things

Set within the Harrogate Conservation Area, the original 1960’s office
building, with its recessed stone façade and flat roof, did little to complement
its grander Victorian neighbours, with their tall storey heights and imposing
slate roofs.
The proposals sought to add a new roof-top pavilion for additional office space
and to increase the building’s mass within the streetscape. The materials of
the pavilion are dark and recessive to imitate the effect of the adjacent slate
roofs. In conjunction with a projecting full height frameless glass atrium, the

Bradford
Client : Bradford College
Value : £2.1M
A series of sensitive interventions within the College’s Lister Building brings
the building back to life, re-connecting spaces and creating a series of unique
flexible learning environments for the College’s Higher Education Students.
Completed in 1911, the Lister Building was designed to replicate the workings

to the gallery curator to develop a brief and concept which addressed
the complexities of the existing building within the challenging budgetary
constraints. The development refurbished the north-eastern wing of the
building to provide a flexible gallery space supported by an adjacent cafe,
