PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY - 2010
Half the year is over - the leaves and flowers are in full bloom - the weather is sort of
like summer - one day warm, the next day cool. Screwy weather all over the globe.
Tornadoes, floods, earthquakes - I guess we can't complain here. Enjoy today tomorrow it might snow.
Independence Day - July 4th - so called in commemoration of the Declaration of
Independence adopted July 4, 1776 - People celebrate this 'occasion in many ways.
Some go to cemeteries - some go to parades - picnics - vacations start - to some
children, it means no school - each has their own way of observing this holiday.
However, you do this - think of 'what we have here in this country - freedom. Enjoy.
Going in a different direction - do you know where the word "sandwich" came from ? Anytime you eat a sandwich, you help to perpetuate the memory of an English
nobleman in the 18th century. John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich, became first
lord of the admiralty in 1748. He had a passion for gambling and he would slip away
for an hour or two to do so. He often directed his servant to bring him roast beef
between slices of bread so he could eat at the gambling table. He was the only world
leader to do this in public. As a result, his royal title attached to this early form of fast
food and sandwich became familiar throughout the world.
Don't forget the picnic at Flood Park - Thursday, July 15h - KFC free - however, $1 fee
for bingo prizes. Last day to sign up July 13th - 11 AM. - See Ethel or Gloria.
Bingo needs volunteers at all times. The gift shop needs shoppers - good stuff. We
need members at meetings - come on down and see what is going on.
Have a good month.

HAPPINESS IS MANY THINGS
Garnett Ann Schultz
Happiness is many things
In many different ways...
It's quietness of early dawn,
The precious golden days,
The laughter of a boy and girl,
A youngster off to school,
A mother rocking, to and fro
Enjoying evening's cool.
Happiness could be a smile,
Perhaps a shy "hello",
Or just a handclasp telling you
The things you want to know;
A new and precious dream come true,
A treasure from above
Could be the touch of someone dear
That fills your heart with love.
Happiness is memories
Of yesterdays gone by,
It's gladness in so many ways
That lights a loved one's eyes;
The little things that mean so much
However small they be,
They hold a store of tender thoughts
That others cannot see.
Happiness is many things
Perhaps another dawn,
A big full moon that's shining down,
A star to wish upon;
It's what we feel within our hearts
That brings a restful peace,
It's home and friends and loved ones dear
Happiness is these.
