The walks are led by volunteers, many of whom represent local walking groups, and our thanks go to these willing people for kindly agreeing to do this. The Walks Saturday 18th June 1.45pm – Pen Den Trail Distance: 5 miles Contact: Paul Clarke on 07827 665495 or 01484 861499 (No booking required) A varied and scenic walk from Penistone Railway Station to Denby Dale Railway Station via the Trans Pennine Trail with only a small amount of road walking. Return to Penistone from Denby Dale by train. Very well behaved dogs allowed at owners’ risk provided they are on short leads and closely controlled. This is a published walk, devised by the leader. Leaflets widely available or downloadable from Denby Dale Walkers are Welcome website. Meet at 1.45pm at Penistone Railway Station car park. Bring your own drinks and snacks. Café and toilets in Denby Dale and Penistone. Sunday 19th June 10.30am – The Dearne Way: Scissett to Bretton Distance: 4 miles Contact: Mike Mortimer on 01484 861216 A varied and interesting walk of about 4 miles (6.4 km) along the infant River Dearne, culminating in the beautiful grounds of Bretton Hall with its nationally famous sculpture park. A leisurely walk almost entirely on the flat (one short uphill section of about 200m) and predominantly on pleasant footpaths. The A636 and one minor road have to be crossed. Meet at the entrance to the car park situated behind Scissett Baths and Fitness Centre. The walk is expected to take about two to two and a half hours. On street parking is available behind Scissett Baths. A paycarpark (Bretton Country Park Car Park) is the finishing point. This is adjacent to the A637 just N of Haigh and M1 junction 38. Booking is not required, although the walk leader would appreciate it if attendees could give advance notice if this is at all possible. No cost is involved other than transport. 18th–26th June 2016 East Peak Outdoors 10.30am – Stocksbridge Walkers Are Welcome Circular Walk Distance: 7 miles/3.5 hours Contact: Dave Pickersgill on 07795 644899 (No booking required) Mostly on well-defined paths with the occasional stile and some rough ground which is steep in sections. Some paths are muddy. There is one steep ascent. An undulating walk which will visit the Trig Point with extensive views to the Peak District. Then a descent to circumnavigate two reservoirs in the Ewden Valley. Retuirn via the Wantley Dragon and the (supposed) grave of a Saxon King, Walders Low. Meet at 10.30am by the Stocks at Bolsterstone Church. (SL bus from Middlewood Tram Stop to Stone Moor Road, then 0.5mile walk). No public toilets en-route. Monday 20th June 7.30pm – Hysterical History and Proper Gossip Tuesday 21st June 6.30pm – Lower Cumberworth Circular Distance: 3 miles Contact: Geoff Smith on 01484 868167 or 07527 210162, email: geoffsmith2@ sky.com (No booking required) A leisurely walk with no significant hill climbs or descents. There are no untoward hazards. There is one step-over stile; the others are walk through. There is a fairly busy road to cross twice. Meet at The Foresters Arms, Lower Cumberworth at 6.15pm for a prompt start at 6.30pm. A maximum 2 hour walk, returning at 8.30pm for an optional bar meal in the pub. Orchard Camping is a small family-run campsite ideally situated on the edge of the Pennines. Based in Penistone, we are surrounded by beautiful scenery, fantastic bike routes and a range of walks. We offer camping pitches for 6 tents on a regular basis but can extend to accommodate more for large parties or special occasions. Sunday 26th June Friday 24th June 5.30pm – Molly Mangle’s Meander Distance: 6 miles/3.5 hours Contact: Barbara Lodge on 07757 552213 (No booking required) Molly’s nature walk which she did daily to collect washing from the villagers. Gentle walk with two steepish climbs. Meet at Stocksmoor Railway Station, 5.30pm. Drink at The Clothiers Arms afterwards. 12noon – The George, Upper Denby – Pie & Pea Walk Distance: 4 miles Contact: Dean at The George Inn on 01484 861347 (Please book in advance if Pie & Peas required) A ramble of around 4 miles through fields and woodland around Upper Denby. A generally easy walk, though likely some undulations and stone step-over stiles. Dogs under control welcome but please note likely to be livestock in some of the fields.
