Look Down, O Lord
WILLIAM BYRD (c.1543-1623)
Look down, O Lord, on me, poor man;
In Thee I live, I move and am;
O clear my soul and conscience,
That I in Thee my peace may find,
Rest to my heart, joy to my mind,
Freed from my sin and mine offence. - William Leighton (c.1565-1622)
Loving Shepherd of Thy Sheep
JOHN RUTTER (b.1945)
Loving shepherd of thy sheep,
Keep thy lamb, in safety keep;
Nothing can thy power withstand,
None can pluck me from thy hand.
Loving shepherd, ever near,
Teach thy lamb thy voice to hear;
Suffer not my steps to stray
From the straight and narrow way.
I would praise thee ev’ry day,
Gladly all thy will obey,
Like thy blessed ones above,
Happy in thy perfect love.
Where thou leadest I would go,
Walking in thy steps below,
Till before my Father’s throne
I shall know as I am known. – Jane Leeson (1807-1882)

Ecco mormorar l’onde
Ecco mormorar l'onde
e tremolar le fronde
a l'aura mattutina e gli arboscelli,
e sovra i verdi rami i vaghi augelli
cantar soavemente
e rider l'oriente.
Ecco già l'alba appare
e si specchia nel mare
e rasserena il cielo
e [le campagne] imperla il dolce gelo,
e gli alti monti indora.
O bella e vaga Aurora,
L'aura è tua messaggera,
e tu de l'aura
ch'ogni arso cor ristaura.
CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI (1567-1643)
Here are the waves murmuring
and the foliage quivering
at the morning breeze; and the shrubs,
and on the tree branches the pretty birds
sing softly;
and the Orient smiles.
Here dawn looms up
and is reflected in the sea
and brightens up the sky
and beads the sweet ice
and gilds the tall mountains.
O beautiful and vague dawn,
the gentle breeze is your herald
and you [are the herald] of the breeze
which refreshes every burnt heart. - Torquato Tasso (1544-1595)
The Earth Adorned (Sommarpsalm)
WALDEMAR ÅHLÉN (1894-1982)
The earth adorned in verdant robe
Sends praises upward surging,
While soft winds breathe on fragrant flow’rs
From winter now emerging.
The sunshine bright gives warmth and light
To budding blossoms tender,
Proclaiming summer splendor.
From out the wood, the birds now sing
And each its song now raises,
To join with all the universe
In voicing thankful praises.
With hope and joy their songs employ
A rapturous exultation
In praise of God’s creation.
O God, amid these joys of life,
Creation’s glory beaming,
Grant us the grace to keep your word
And live in love redeeming.
All flesh is grass, the flowers fade,
And time is fleeting ever;
God’s word remains forever.

When I Fall in Love
When I fall in love it will be forever, or I’ll never fall in love.
In a restless world like this is, love is ended before it’s begun
And too many moonlight kisses seem to cool in the warmth of the sun.
When I give my heart, it will be completely, or I’ll never give my heart,
And the moment I can feel that you feel that way too,
Is when I fall in love with you. – Edward Heyman (1907-1981)
VICTOR YOUNG (1900-1956)
ARR. KIRBY SHAW (b. 1942)
Monica McConnel, alto
It Don’t Mean a Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)
DUKE ELLINGTON (1899-1974)
ARR. MAC HUFF
It don’t mean a thing, if it ain’t got that swing,
It don’t mean a thing all you got to do is sing.
It makes no difference if it’s sweet or hot,
Just give that rhythm everything you got.
No, it don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing.
What good is melody, what good is music,
If it ain’t possessin’ something sweet.
It ain’t the melody, it ain’t the music,
There’s something else that makes the tune complete. – Irving Mills (1894-1985)
Monica McConnel, piano; Craig Disselkoen, drums

Ah, Holy Jesus
JOHANN CRÜGER (1598-1662)
ARR. CAROLYN JENNINGS (b.1936)
Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended,
That man to judge thee hath in hate pretended?
By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted.
For me, kind Jesus, was thine Incarnation,
Thy mortal sorrow, and thy life’s oblation;
Thy death of anguish and thy bitter Passion, for my salvation.
Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee,
I do adore thee, and will ever pray thee,
Think on thy pity and thy love unswerving, not my deserving.
– Johann Heerman (1585-1647), trans. Robert Bridges (1844-1930)

Dobrú Noc (Good Night)
SLOVAKIAN FOLK SONG
ARR. VICTOR C. JOHNSON
Dobrú noc ma mila,
dobre spi,
nech sa ti snivaju
o mne sny. Dobrú noc.
Sleep, my dear one, sleep on, my child.
May the angels bring slumber mild.
Close your eyes, do not cry;
Sleep, my dear one, sleep on, my child.
- Traditional; English text, Victor C. Johnson
Janelle Bolkema, violin
Go, gentle babe
PAUL AYRES (b.1970)
At the Foundling Hospital in London (Britain’s original home for abandoned children, and also London’s first ever public art gallery), rings, ribbons,
coins or other tokens were sometimes left by mothers with their children as a unique means of identification, in case they were ever in a position to reclaim
them. Sometimes letters, prayers, or poems were left with the child, and this text is one of these. Of the 16,282 babies brought to the hospital between
1741 and 1760, only 152 were reclaimed.
Go, gentle babe, thy future life be spent
In virtuous purity and calm content;
Life’s sunshine bless, and no anxious care
Sit on thy brow, and draw the falling tear;
Thy country’s grateful servant mayest thou prove
And all thy life be happiness and love. – Anonymous
Golden Slumbers
ENGLISH FOLK SONG
ARR. MATTHEW CULLOTON (b.1976)
Golden slumbers kiss your eyes.
Smiles awake you when you rise.
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby.
Care you know not, therefore sleep,
While I o’er you watch do keep.
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby. – Thomas Dekker (1572-1632)
Leanna Bentz, harp; Ashley Huisman, flute

At Last
HARRY WARREN (1893-1981)
At last my love has come along.
My lonely days are over, and life is like a song.
At last the skies above are blue.
My heart was wrapped in clover, the night I looked at you.
I found a dream that I can speak to,
A dream that I can call my own.
I found a thrill to press my cheek to,
A thrill I’ve never known.
You smiled and then the spell was cast.
And here we are in heaven, for you are mine at last. – Mack Gordon (1904-1959)
Craig Disselkoen, drums

Dance of Zálongo
GREEK FOLK SONG
ARR. CAROL BARNETT (b.1949)
This Greek folk song recalls an event in 1803, when the women of the village of Souli danced to the edge of the nearby Zálongo canyon and one by one
leapt to their death rather than be captured by the enemy. Sung in Greek.
Refrain:
Verses:
Farewell, springs, forests, mountains and hills.
Farewell, unfortunate world, farewell, sweet life,
And you, destitute homeland, farewell forever.
The women of Souli haven’t learned only how to live,
They also know how to die, rather than consent to slavery.
As if to a fair, to see the lilac blossoms,
Into the abyss they go down, with songs, with joy.
Fish do not live on land, nor flowers on the sandy beach;
So the women of Souli do not live without freedom. – trans. Perry Phillips and Soterios G. Stavrou

NIKOLAI KEDROV (1871-1940)
Our Father, which art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done,
in earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.

Pulchra es amica mea,
suavis et decora sicut Jerusalem,
terribilis ut castrorum acies ordinata.
Averte oculos tuos a me
quia ipsi me avolare fecerunt.
Thou art beautiful, O my love,
sweet and comely as Jerusalem,
terrible as an army set in array.
Turn away thy eyes from me.
for they have made me flee away. – Song of Solomon 6:4-5
Set Me as a Seal (from “A New Creation”)
RENÉ CLAUSEN (b.1953)
Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death.
Many waters cannot quench love; neither can the floods drown it. – Song of Solomon 8:6

SPIRITUAL
ARR. JESTER HARISTON (1901-2000)
Keep yo’ hand on de plow, hold on!
Nora, Nora, let me come in, de doors all fast’ned an’ de winders pinned,

Keep yo’ hand on de plow, hold on!
If you wanna get to heaven let me tell you how, jes’ keep yo’ hand on de gospel plow,
If dat plow stays in yo’ hand, land you straight in de promised land,
Keep yo’ hand on de plow, hold on!
Mary had a golden chain, ev’ry link spelled my Jesus’ name.
Keep on climbin’ and don’t you tire. Ev’ry rung goes high’r and high’r,
Keep yo’ hand on de plow, hold on! – Traditional

Dirat-on (from “Les Chansons des Roses”)
MORTEN LAURIDSEN (b.1943)
Abandon entouré d’abandon,
tendresse touchant aux tendresses...
C'est ton intérieur qui sans cesse
se caresse, dirait-on;
Abandon surrounding abandon,
tenderness touching tenderness…
Your oneness endlessly
caresses itself, so they say;
se caresse en soi-même,
par son propre reflet éclairé.
Ainsi tu inventes le theme
du Narcisse exaucé.
self-caressing
through its own clear reflection
Thus you invent the theme
of Narcissus fulfilled.
– Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926),

Pa otide u seloto,
ta se vana na oroto,
na oroto do momite,
He went to the village,
and joined the circle dance,

TRADITIONAL COWBOY SONGS
ARR. ROGER WAGNER (1914-1992)
I’m a poor lonesome cowboy,
and a long way from home …
Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam,
And the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
Home, home on the range,
Where the deer and the antelope play,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
Whoopee ti-yi-yo …
It’s whoopin’ and yellin’ and a drivin’ them dogies.
Oh how I wish that you would go on.
It’s a-whoopin’ and a-punchin’, and go on, little dogies,
For you know Wyomin’ is to be your new home.
Whoopee ti-yi-yo, git along, little dogies,
It’s your misfortune and none of my own.
Whoopie ti-yi-yo, git along, little dogies,
For you know Wyomin’ will be your new home.
Green grow the lilacs all sparkling with dew.
I’m lonely, my darling, since parting with you.
But by our next meeting I’ll hope to prove true,
And change the green lilacs to the red, white, and blue.
Oh, bury me not on the lone prairie,
Where the wolves can howl and growl o’er me.
Place a red, red rose o’er my lonely grave,
With a prayer to Him who my soul will save.
Oh, bury me not on the lone prairie,
Where the coyotes howl and the winds blow free,
And when I die you can bury me
‘Neath the western sky on the lone prairie.
I’m on my horse and I’m goin’ on a run.
I’m the quickest shootin’ cowboy that ever pulled a gun.
Come a ti-yi yippy yippy yea, yippy yea,
Come a ti-yi yippy yippy yea.
Farewell Bull Dog, I wish you no harm.
I’ve done quit the bus’ness to go on the farm.
Come a ti-yi yippy yippy yea, yippy yea,
Come a ti-yi yippy yippy yea! – Traditional

Blessing
BENJAMIN KORNELIS (b.1963)
Composed for the 2012-2013 Dordt College Concert Choir.
God go before you to guide you.
God go behind you to protect you.
God go beneath you to support you.
God go beside you to befriend you.
Be not afraid.
And let the blessing of Almighty God,
The Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
Descend upon you, settle in around you, and make its home in you.
Be not afraid.
Go in peace.
Amen. – Anonymous

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
FROM Wyeth’s
Repository of Sacred Music (1813),
ARR. MACK WILBERG (b.1955)
Come, thou Fount of ev’ry blessing,
Tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mound of thy redeeming love.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wand’ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed his precious blood.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above.
Here I raise my Ebenezer,
Hither by thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Prone to wander Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above.
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wand’ring heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above. – Robert Robinson (1735-1790)
