Volume 2, Issue 5 January 5, 2016 6th Grade (Cont.) Social Studies: A message from the nurse Tis’ the season… For the Flu. Did you know that the flu season starts in October until May and most commonly peaks in the United States between December and February? One of the ways to prevent getting the flu is by getting the flu vaccine. The vaccine protects against the 34 most common influenza strains this year. I have attached a link that will give you information and statistics regarding the vaccine. The vaccine helps protect against the respiratory flu not the “stomach flu.” It is not a guarantee; however, it reduces the chances of getting the flu and/or severity of the flu. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/season/fluseason 20152016.htm Another way to help reduce the risk of spreading the virus is HAND WASHING. I know that sounds simple enough, but many kids do not wash their hands enough or properly. Please talk with your children about the importance of proper hand washing. http://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/whenho whandwashing.html There is treatment for the flu is diagnosed within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. The symptoms include, but not limited, a high fever, body aches, fatigue, or headache. Remember if your student has a fever over 100.0F, they are not allowed to return to school until they are feverfree for 24 hours without the assistance of medication. Please let me know if you have any questions about the vaccine or the flu. Dopkowski Social Studies: Hello! In social studies A, we will be spending most of the month studying the Middle East. We will take a look at past conflicts and present day’s happenings as well.
