Lesson 11: Beginning Subtraction
Objective
Students will be able to identify the number that is one less than a given number.
Warm up
3 - 1=2
Move 5 rings to the left side of MathLine. Show it to the students. Ask students, if we take away 1 ring,
how many rings will we have left? [4] Subtract 1 ring to show the students that 5 minus 1 equals 4. Say
it aloud together.
5 - 1=4
Continue this process with different numbers until students understand the concept of subtracting.
