Message from the Principal
Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),
Is it too soon to already be excited about next school year? We are working
hard to wrap up the 2014-2015 school year here at CFMS; but, plans are also well
underway for next year.
Following is some important information to help you as a family get ready for
next school year.
Student Schedules will be available on Infinite Campus on Friday, August 7,
at 4:00 pm.
Our Registration Days are scheduled August 11 from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm as
well as August 12 from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm. All students and a parent should attend on registration day. On registration day, parents should fill out start-of-year
paperwork. Students and parents should try out locker combinations and find classrooms. Information about fall athletics and Voyagers will be available. Yearbook
pictures will be taken on Registration Days. Co-curricular code meetings are
scheduled for August 11 and 12 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the middle school
auditorium. Attendance on one of these nights is a requirement for any student
(and parent) who is planning on participating in sports or clubs at the middle
school. Students are required to attend just one co-curricular meeting during their
middle school years. Sixth grade students do not need to get a physical; one is required in seventh grade, but not in eighth.
A school supply list is included in the July letter. It will also be available on the
middle school website.
Bus information may be obtained by calling the Yellow Bus Company at 715726-2454.
September 1st is WEB Day!! This first day of school is ONLY for sixth graders and their 8th grade mentors!
Parents will definitely want to attend our Back to School Night on September
3rd from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. On this night, families will have the chance to
learn about our schools, teams, and programming.
We are making plans for a GREAT school year for our students at
Chippewa Falls Middle School! Please do not hesitate to call or email
If you have any questions.

Spring Sports Information Meeting:
Practices are held on M - T - TH - F. Games will be scheduled on Friday in early September and athletes and their parents
will get hard copy schedules on the following Monday. We will keep you updated on the schedules to be handed out. Your
sons and daughters will bring these copies home. Also on the Middle School Athletics’ Website and Webpage, you should be
able to access the Sports Calendar on the right side of the page. This calendar will include practice and game times and who
we are competing against.
There is also a page that allows you to click on the appropriate school and to get directions to those facilities. Athletic contests that are canceled will be put on the Parent Portal access and I believe a text message will be sent to your cell phones as
well. Once a contest is canceled it will not be rescheduled. I don't know what times the buses arrive back to the middle
school after contests, but your sons/daughters will have the opportunity to call from the middle school physical education
office to arrange for a ride home. The buses take our athletes from the middle school to their sporting events and return
them back to the middle school after the contests are finished.
A new Chippewa Falls School District Policy was put into place in spring 2011 and the rule states: Only the parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of your son(s) or daughter(s) can transport them home from a contest after signing a waiver form, which can
be obtained from their respective coach or coaches. You cannot transport a neighbor(s) or friend(s) who are on the team
from a contest or event. You may transport anyone after they return to the middle school from their contest.
We have implemented a new program called WHOAA for all 8th grade students and athletes during the school year.
W.H.O.A.A. stands for: Wall of Honor Of Academics and Athletics. At the end of the year awards, any student or student athlete that participates in 3 or more different before or after-school activities with a 3.5 - 3.99 GPA with distinction all 3
quarters, can be inducted into the Wall of Honor. Those that maintain a 4.0 GPA with distinction all 3 quarters, can be
inducted into the Wall Of Honor, will have an asterisk(*) next to their name. These names are placed on a plaque that is
displayed on the Wall Of Honor by the Middle School Gymnasium. The committee includes a combination of: Principals,
Teachers, Advisors, Coaches and the Athletic Director. All 8th Grade activities included are: All 8th Grade sports, Band,
Morning Jazz Band, Choir, Swing Choir, Orchestra, Forensics, Student Council, Talent Show, Yearbook, CFMS Middle
Pages, Special Olympics, Voyagers or other Club Activities.
I hope all students have an enjoyable experience and they all have fun in the spirit of competition and good sportsmanship.
Our coaches are human and will make mistakes as will your young athletes, so remember winning is icing on the cake! We
practice fundamentals daily and the games are used to showcase all of the hard work they have put into those practices.
If we win, we will do so with humility. If we lose, we will do so with dignity and class! Let's have a great season!
Mr. Britton - CFMS Athletic Director – Ext. 2485

From the Nurse’s Office
If your child takes a daily medication, please send only enough pills to get your
child through the half day on June 5, 2015. Any extra medication will need to be
picked up on or before the last day of school by a parent or it will be disposed of. If
your child has an emergency medication at school, (ex. Epi Pen, Diastat, inhaler),
the medication will be sent home in your child’s back pack the last day of school
unless you make other arrangements. If your child has any medication at school that
is not taken on a regular basis, (ex. Tylenol, Motrin, cough drops, cough syrup),
please make arrangements to pick up this medication as soon as possible. Any
medication left in the health office at the end of the last day of school will be disposed of. Thank you. Have a
fun and safe summer.

CFMS Choir Information
The CFMS Show Choir has been busy with talent show performances as well as our finale concert
with Harmonics at the high school. Thank you to all of the show choir students and their parents/guardians
for a fantastic year. I have next year’s show picked out and am excited to see how it comes together!!
On May 4, the music students who participated in our annual magazine fundraiser in September were treated to an awesome performance by Matt Wilhelm. Matt is a professional BMX biker who put on a spectacular
show as our way of saying “thanks” to the students. After Matt’s performance, the music department held our
incentive raffle drawings and handed out several great prizes. Thank you to all who helped us out this year by
ordering magazines! The CFMS choirs award three $100 scholarships from the magazine fundraiser proceeds.
Students and their families were required to write an essay explaining how they would use the money toward
improving their vocal musicianship. The three students chosen were Emmalia Kline (8th grade); Dane Simmons (8th grade); and Tristan Kupczak (6th grade). All three students will be presented with their scholarship
money at our spring choir concerts. Congratulations!
The choir concert on May 12 includes the 7th/8th grade boys choir and the 6th grade mixed choir. The
concert on May 14 includes the 7th and 8th grade girls choirs. Concerts begin at 7 pm in the auditorium.
Families please drop off your son or daughter in the music department by 6:45 pm. The concerts should last
about 45 minutes. Please have your child wear black bottoms and their red music polo shirt. Come and enjoy
your students!!
Grade 8 Field Trip
On Thursday, June 4, the CFMS eighth grade will be taking a class trip to Valley
Fair in Minnesota. The trip is the culminating reward activity for this school year.
The intent of the trip is to motivate our students to focus on completing the school
Year on an upbeat and productive note. Those students who will eligible to participate will be students who meet certain standards regarding school behavior. Therefore, beginning April 1 and ending on June 3, your student could potentially
be excluded from the trip if he/she is suspended either in-school or out-of-school for
a half day or longer. Please help reinforce positive behavior to ensure that your son/daughter is able to
participate in this great experience.

News from the Family and Consumer Science Department
The 8th grade Kidz Junction class recently had the opportunity to participate in a school-to-work teaching
opportunity with Mrs. Olson’s students. The 8th grade students worked in groups and created educational and
fun/engaging lessons that met the learning needs of the students they worked with. Some of the activities
were—Using math skills to make hot chocolate, working with voice output switches to engage in communication with students who are nonverbal, a Frozen Sensory box, adopting and taking care of a pet, and more.
Both classes hugely benefited from being a part of this activity. A great time was had by all!

19. A BIG thank you to all the students, instructors and Middle
School staff for making this such a successful program! We will have
a table set up at Middle School Registration days on August 11 and

- Doug Ellis and Peg Herrmann
Thanks for a Great Year!
The Middle School is ending the year with 68 matches. There were 13 new matches
made this year – WOW! Our middle school mentors and mentees love spending
their time together playing board games, playing sports in the gyms, playing shuffleboard, going outside, or just sitting and talking.
The overall feedback from our Middle School mentee students on what they like
best about their mentor is just having someone take time to come play with them
and listen to what they have to say.
Something so simple and takes only 30 minutes per week, yet means the world to
these kids!
If you are interested in becoming a mentor and making a difference in the life of a child, please just call or
email me! We are accepting applications for next school year.

6:30 pm—7:00 pm there will be a reception followed by the awards
ceremony from 7:00 pm—8:00 pm.
Due to changes in the state assessment, students selected to receive
the Presidential Awards will meet the 75th percentile or higher on our
district’s most recent normed referenced assessments.
Additional awards will also be presented that evening. Parents/
guardians will receive a letter in the mail informing them of their
child’s acknowledgement and inviting them to the ceremony.
Summer Reading from the Reading Department
Please remember that reading during the summer is important to prevent a slide in the skills that
they have gained during the past school year. That practice in reading can be done in a number of
different ways. Some students enjoy working on crafts or various projects during the summer. Make sure that they have the opportunity to read and follow the directions that accompany that
new craft or other project. Some students love to cook; encourage them to try new recipes that
require the following of directions. Of course some of us enjoy relaxing with a good book. Several of
the sixth and seventh grade classes have help to compile a list of must read books for students
before they leave the Middle School. It was fun to see how excited students were when they talked
about these books!

Grading for Learning Forecast: 2015-2016
There are great things happening in our classrooms every day. Teachers have been revising their curriculum to include transferrable skills like reading, writing, and problem-solving. We are blurring the lines
between subject areas, focusing on growth for all students, and getting students thinking about their
college or career futures.
Students attend eight classes during the day at the middle school! To make our processes clear to students and parents, we have a shared Grading for Learning structure that we will be using in 2015-2016
at the middle school.
First, teachers will identify CLEAR LEARNING TARGETS for every unit. The teachers focus on one to
three specific skills that the students work to master at the end of the unit. These may even be posted in
the classroom as “I can” statements. For example, a learning target for 8th grade social studies might be,
“I can analyze how the Louisiana Purchase was an example of conflict and cooperation among groups or
nations.” The learning targets are the focus for the unit.
Teachers begin the unit with a PRE-ASSESSMENT to determine the starting point of the learning. Teachers are looking for pre-existing knowledge or skills related to the the learning target. The purpose of the pre
-assessment is to give the teacher information. Pre-assessments are not graded.
The teacher then plans for INSTRUCTION and PRACTICE. These are activities like group work, class discussion, and homework. Their purpose is to practice the skills the students are working on. Students get
feedback on these items through self-checks, peer checks, classroom checks, or teacher checks. Because
students aren’t expected to be at the mastery level yet, these practice activities are not graded.
While they are in the learning and practice stage, teachers FORMATIVELY ASSESS how students are
progressing with mastering the learning targets. A formative assessment is a “check in.” They can be informal, like a show of hands, class discussion, or observation of student practice. They can also be formal,
like a quiz or written activity. The purpose of the formative assessments are to give the teacher feedback
on how student skills are developing. Because students aren’t expected to be at the mastery level yet,
these practice activities are not graded. They may be put in Infinite Campus for recording purposes, but
they do not receive any weight in the final grade. The teacher uses the feedback he or she gets from the
formative assessments to make adjustments to the instruction.
When the formative assessments show the teacher that the students are ready, the teacher gives the
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT. The purpose of a summative assessment is to document that the student
mastered the learning target. A summative assessment can be any activity that shows the students’ skills:
a project, lab, demonstration, speech, essay, or test. The summative assessment grade is recorded in the
gradebook. If a student hasn’t mastered the standard when he or she does the summative assessment, he
or she may re-do that assessment. More information about these processes will be communicated next
year when we begin this practice as a school.
The Biggest Differences in a Grading for Learning System
There’s a lot of information in the Grading for Learning
Forecast article. To help simplify it, let’s look at what the
biggest differences are:
 Grades used to be treated like compensation. A
child would do a bunch of stuff in exchange for points.
Points are granted in different ways, based on the
teacher. It can be for everything from taking a test to
bringing in a box of kleenexes. Points accumulate and
equal grade at the end of the quarter. Because of the variety of ways students earn points, it can
be confusing to know what grades really mean. Because parents need communication about
their child’s progress, first and foremost, we should make sure that grades represent what
a student knows and is able to do.
 Because grading practice activities is premature, practice gets feedback, but not a formal
grade. Formative assessments, homework, practice, and other learning activities receive feedback so students know how to continue to improve. If a teacher wishes to use Infinite Campus to
document progress, he or she can give a grade for these items with no weight assigned. Parents
and students will be able to see these unweighted scores in Infinite Campus.
 Because students learn at different rates, we will use a school-wide system for summative redos. The system will include
* A student-owned plan
* Re-teaching
* Additional practice

A re-take or re-do score replaces the original score.
Change doesn’t mean that what we have been doing is bad. It means that we have new information
that will help us do better. Amidst all of the change, there are some things that have remained the
same. First, the work you do at home to support your child’s learning is as important as it has always been. A child’s first teacher is their parent; and, this system doesn’t change that. Second, we
have teachers here at CFMS who absolutely have your child’s best interest and growth as their priority. Third, we continue to recognize that middle schoolers are a unique group with varying
strengths, interests, and needs. We’ve developed our school around this belief.
Even though systems and processes may have changed, you will still see a quality education being
deliberately planned and provided to your child by caring adults. We look forward to seeing you at
Back to School Night on September 3rd, when we will talk about these changes in person.

Badger Exam
The Chippewa Falls Middle School will participate in the
Badger Exam this spring. Each team will be designated testing
days. We ask for parents’ help in doing everything possible to
assure their child’s attendance on their testing day. While we
understand illnesses cannot be avoided, we would greatly
appreciate your cooperation with avoiding scheduling appointments on your child’s testing days.
Your child will need earphones for the test. While we have some at school, your child might feel more
comfortable if he or she has his or her own. We encourage you to have your child’s name on the earphones
brought to school. Your child may bring them in advance of the test and leave them with his or her TA
teacher. Thank you very much for your help and support as we take on this new challenge here at CFMS!

Summer Slide
The concept known as “summer regression” or “summer slide” suggests that
students’ skills weaken over the summer months when they are not in school.
Specific to the area of reading, there are things students can do over the summer
to keep their reading skills sharp!
Visit the public library often. Students have been taught how to pick out books
for their interests and reading levels. If they are stuck, encourage them to ask
the librarians there for help. That’s what they are there for!
As your child is reading his or her books, encourage him or her to practice some Think Aloud skills. Ask
them to:

Explain to you how the events in the book are similar to other knowledge he or she has from school,
from other books, from movies, from life.

Make predictions about what will happen next in the book.

Visualize the events from the book, either describing to you or drawing them.

Shrink down and summarize chapters or sections for you.
These are some examples to combat reading summer slide. There are many free and simple ways to keep student skills sharp in all areas. Think about an interesting concept from science or history and then explain it to
the rest of the family. They can do hands-on or mental puzzles, creatively problem-solve issues around the
house or neighborhood, follow recipes or instructions, and measure for projects. Most importantly, summer is
a time to get outside, move around, and be creative!

Educational Excellence
EdCamp
On April 18 teachers and administrators from Chippewa Falls
School District joined teachers and administrators from districts
all over the state and region to learn and network from each other
at EdCamp Eau Claire 2015. EdCamps are "Un-conferences"
where educators gather to learn and discuss topics that are
important to them. Topics are chosen by attendees in the morning
and breakout groups form. There are no planned speakers - just
experts and novices in the field of education that want to learn
from each other. This year, the event was held at the Chippewa Falls Senior High School. Many Chippewa
Falls Middle School teachers attended. Topics ranged from Twitter for Beginners to Reading, Writing & Math
in Non-Core Classrooms to Project-Based Learning to Beyond Play - Drones and Droids for Education and
many more. There were many amazing sponsors of this event including Gordy's County Market, Spectrum
Industries, Coca-Cola, Starbucks, Marian University, Peekaboo Studios, Digital D.I.Y., Super Teacher Worksheets, NameCoach, and Flocabulary.
