Presidents’ Day: George Washington
I am the Lord. That is my name! –Isaiah 42:8 NIrV
Each year in February, people celebrate the birth of George Washington, the first President
of the United States. Before Washington was president, he was the general who led the army
during the Revolutionary War. He also led the meetings that resulted in the writing of the
Constitution of the United States.
Any one of those events would make someone famous, but President Washington did all
three. That is pretty impressive! President Washington has another name or title. He is known
as the Father of our Country.
Like President Washington, you have a name. You may even have a nickname; for example,
some people named Michael are called Mike and some people named Margaret are
called Maggie.
• Do you have a nickname?
• What is it?
• Is your nickname short for something else or does it mean something completely different?
No matter what your name is, those who believe in Jesus have another name, Christian.
They are members of God’s family.
• Are you a Christian?
PRAYER
• Why do you consider yourself a Christian?
Being called Christian means we know Jesus Christ died for us because he loves us. We
know he rose from the dead to save us from our sins. Being Christian means we know he is
alive in heaven, helping us when we need it. As people called Christians, we can show God’s
love every day in what we say and how we live. People will know we are Christians by our
words and actions. We can also tell others about Jesus and his love for us.
• Do you know anyone who needs to hear about Jesus?
• What could you say to someone who needs to hear about Jesus?
PRAYER
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for George Washington, our
first President and Father of our Country. We thank you for our new
name, Christian. We ask for your help telling others about you. Help
us share the news of Jesus. In his name we pray. Amen.
